Hi there! My daughter just turned 4 months old and has been refluxing since she was 2-3 weeks old. She was started on Zantac and we thought we had the answer! She was a new baby, but then it stopped working after about two weeks. Then we went to a pediatric gastro. doctor who started her on Nexium 10mg once daily. That dosage was upped by our pediatrician to 10mg twice daily. Before the nexium our daughter was crying constantly, refusing to eat unless she was asleep, choking , not sleeping etc. You all know the drill! After about 6 days on the higher dose of nexium our daughter was feeling wonderful! She was sleeping better, eating calmly and without crying, arching back etc. She was relaxed and started to smile and coo again. Now 3 weeks into the Nexium I am watching the symptoms return. They are not as bad as they were, but they are increasing everyday. Bedtime involves 2 hours of pacing the floors, unable to nurse and crying. Her back is stiff, she is irritable and her face turns VERY red sometimes when she nurses and she makes a horrible groaning sound form the pit of her tummy up to her throat when she tries to eat.
What should we do?? Why would the nexium work so great for a while? Do we need a higher dose, different medicine, or should we try Elecare? Could there be something else going on? I have tried an elimination diet but can’t seem to stick to it. I am at my wits end, I can’t believe I am doing this for the fourth time. Please help…. thanks so much!
March 30, 2012 at 6:15 pm #70145hellbenntKeymasterhow are poops & gas? why do you think elecare would help things?
has she gained any weight in the three weeks since starting the nexium?do you have zantac around? try giving that, too, 4 hrs seperate from the nexiumMarch 31, 2012 at 11:51 am #70157AnonymousInactiveThanks so much for responding! Her poop is strange sometimes thick and custardy and sometimes green and somewhat mucousy. Occasionally it is the normal seedy yellow, but very rare. She is gassy and her tummy seems to hurt her most of the time. I do have Zantac, it is really hard to get it down her. It is like mouthwash, but I will TRY! : ) She has probably gained weight, she is a chunky 17 pounds which is probably part of why the doctors aren’t very worried. She is just so miserable.
I will try the Zantac. Thank you so much from all of us parents, hellbent for your dedication! My hubby says if we win the big lottery here in CA he is going to donate millions to GERD research. : ) So many doctors just don’t get how it can affect a family and the pain our babies go though. Her gastro doctor wanted to start her out on 5mg of Nexium a day at 17 pounds. And then not see us again for a month, when you’re baby is hurting like this a month is a lifetime! Thank goodness our pediatrician isn’t afraid to dose medicine.momof4gerdbabys2012-03-31 11:58:02

anyway, ME, I wouldn’t quit breastfeeding. what happens if you quit and then the formula doesn’t work? and then you have to switch formulas? and switch again?but that’s ME. YOU are the mama!I asked about weight gain, bcse maybe she’s outgrown her nexium dose. my baby had to have his meds increased w/ every little weight gain…to help the zantac go down better find somesome mylanta cherry supreme it’s the one variety of mylanta that does not contain aluminum. it’s hard to find, but you can find store brand equivalents try rite-aid, cvs brand, walmart, target, etc- just look for one that does not list aluminum in the ingredients. you can give 1ml up to 5 times a day- it’s safe, even for newborns. if you see loose stools back off.
You also might try to make your breastmilk more like elecare. it’s hard, but not impossible & it’s ‘just’ two weeks…I did it. I was desperate!Reasons a breastfeeding mother might think her baby is reacting to something in her milk:
*poop that is not ‘normal’ mustardy yellow, seedy breastfed baby poop
*mucous in poop; mucous can look like: snot, jelly, cottage cheese, stringy like the inside of a banana
*foul-smelling poop
*stinky, foul-smelling painful gas
*straining and grunting to poop and, when baby finally does poop, it’s soft
the TED (Total Elimination Diet- Dr. Sears is the ‘known’ one) takes two weeks and then you start adding foods in to see what you CAN eat.
Research all you can! You are your baby’s best advocate!
