I have been reading this boards for weeks now and have gotten a lot of great information. Here is a little background before I ask my questions. π
Son is 4 1/2 months old. Has reflux and has been on Zantac since he was two weeks old. We tried Prevacid around 3 months of age. Within days of starting it he was the worst he has ever been in terms of tummy troubles. He also had the most intense forceful gas while on it. We stopped it and went back to Zantac. My son’s symptoms since he was only a few days old include reflux, intense gas, crying “fits”, eczema (started at 2 months), and blowouts all the time with a sour smell. He is never happy and is always irritable.
I have always thought he was having an issue with what I was eating so I stopped all dairy when he was 3 months old. His eczema was better and he was a tad bit less cranky but felt like it went away the longer I was dairy free. I have also noticed when I eat just about any vegetable he is really gassy too. This is when I started looking online and figured he might have allergies. (Food allergies run in our family but my older son has none.) I came across the TED and decided to try it. Meanwhile, my son had his 4 month check up. I told the doctors something was not right with him. They too felt he might have some kind of intolorance to foods and was all for me trying the TED. We also found out at this time that he has “decreased height velocity”. He started in the 90% at birth and has gone down every check up, now in the 10%. The doctors are concerned that this is happening especially since he is gaining weight. He has a battery of blood tests done including allergy. It showed he was slightly allergic to peanuts. (Have not been eating any because of the family history with a nut allergy.) Thank goodness I have not eaten them! We are waiting on a few other blood test including one to check and see if he has a growth hormone problem. We are scheduled to meet with a GI in two weeks.
Sorry for the long intro…it has been a rough start to life for my little man.
My questions….I started the TED a week ago Monday. Only eating yellow squash, potoates, sweet potatoes, rice, turkey, and pears. Within two days of starting his eczema was totally gone, a tad bit less gassy, and by the end of the week his poop started to change smell. He was still cranky all the time. I realized my prenatal had soy in it so I switched those this weekend to a vegan one. They ended up bothering both my son and I. π As of Sunday, I also stopped his vit. d drops since they had sesame oil in them. I also stopped rice because I was noticing he was worse after I ate it. Monday came and my baby was happy! Not perfect but he was smiling, “talking” and we could see a change. We are still seeing a difference which makes me really happy! He is still having smelly gas and still sucks at sleeping. He sleeps only 20-30 min naps and at night is up every 2 hours. Every time I go in his room at night he is farting. Wondering now if he is having a reaction to turkey? It makes me gassy anyways.
So do I try and take out turkey? Do I assume we are at baseline even with the gas? When I do get to baseline where do I start?
Thank you for your help!!!

My daughter is 3mo old today and sounds very similar to your son. She has had reflux, intense gas and crying, colitis, etc since she was about 3 weeks old. I eliminated dairy and eggs at 4 weeks and then soy and wheat at 6 weeks but still didn’t see the results we were hoping for and she had a major flare up after eating oranges so it scared me into doing TED 5 weeks ago . I have been following everything in TED, except chose organic free range chicken over turkey (just can’t handle turkey very well myself) and occasionally have grass fed beef. She has had some great days and some really bad days, and then last week started having all really really bad days. She has also been on zantac since she was 4 weeks old. We were able to get an urgent referral for a GI specialist and just saw him this week and were told to put her on prevacid. Yesterday was day 1 and she was AWFUL. Not only was she gassy and experiencing tons of stomach pain, her reflux is worse than ever. We didn’t stop the zantac (after reading on here to keep giving it to her until the prevacid kicks in), but she’s still worse than she’s ever been (barely wants to be held but also can’t put her down, won’t sleep, intense screaming, etc). I just called the nurse and they said to keep trying the Prevacid but I can’t in my right mind give it to her one more day based on the immediate reaction we saw yesterday.
Regarding the diet…I just stopped chicken on Friday and she was actually great Sat thru Tues…until we started the Prevacid. Based on her improvement, I think its fair to say chicken was bothering her (btw, she has had microscopic blood and mucous in her poop since 4 weeks, and even after over 8 weeks of no dairy and 5 weeks of TED, she still had blood this week at the GI). I’m hoping that eliminating chicken is the answer, and that now I just need to get her on the right medicine because I know she has built up a tolerance to zantac.
I have the same question as you regarding how do you know you hit baseline? My daughter has been stinky gas free for about a week now, but I don’t know if the blood/mucous has to go away before that’s the baseline. All of this is so confusing and emotionally exhausting!
I would suggest trying to take out turkey, from what I read a lot of babies react to poultry, so maybe that will give you a better change. I’ve been eating nothing but potatoes, squash, zucchini and pears since Friday, and until this Prevacid change and flare up yesterday, we saw a lot more of our happy baby.
Hang in there and hopefully someone can answer your questions! It would help me tremendously too π
Just in case you need to hear this – you are doing great!!

From above, regarding baseline:When the stinky gas is gone completely, the offender is out of his & your system… even if the diapers are still a mess (it takes longer- sometimes MUCH longer – for the colon/intestine to heal after the offender is out of his system). Honestly, this is SO important to know/realize as it’s the indication that you’re getting somewhere.Where it gets tricky is that it’s very possible to not have stinky gas (so you’re on the right diet) but to continue having mucous &/or blood in the stool. It takes a while for the LOs colons to heal (fwiw, it took my 2nd ds 6 wks of TED & no stinky gas before the blood & mucous stopped). So… I would track the stinky gas. While tracking stinky gas, I would wait until 4-5 days of no stinky gas, then call that your ‘baseline’. Then, continue that diet until the blood & mucous goes away. Then, your db has baselined. Then, you can consider adding something to your diet. If, after you start TED again, after 4-5 days, she’s still having stinky gas, then she’s reacting to something in the TED & you’ll need to adjust (my dss reacted to 3-4 things in TED)…
from above: Re: Baseline, I’m talking about waiting for visible blood & mucous to stop. Yes, when all stinky gas, mucous & visible blood is gone for 4-5 days you can declare ‘baseline’. Then, you can start trialing food one by one. Usually, I would eat it 2-3x/day for 4 days in a row to be sure before I declared it a success.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Allergy testing isn’t accurate in a baby…not until about closer to 2 yrs old…Exposure to foods & blood testing: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=12993

What form of prevacid?you could try capsules and wash it down w/ pedialyte.OTC w/ applesauce, pedialyte, etc:
