Ok so my lo is 5 months and we are still having a lot of issues!!! He has seen the GI dr twice in the last month! He has him on compounded prevacid and bethenocal. He will not give anything else and says he will outgrow this. Right now I feel like I am at a breaking point. So the prevacid has definitely helped with the arching and refusing to feed. But he is still constantly uncomfortable screaming and whining throughout the day! He gets 7.5mg in the am and 7.5 mg in the evening. I don’t know what else to do! Help!!
February 18, 2012 at 9:39 am #69866hellbenntKeymasterI would go by your mommy instinct!
My guess is the compounded prevacid isn’t working/has lost it’s stability.have you read Prevacid 101? I cannot recommend strongly enough that you read throguh it…I’ve actually even just added MORE to it, in case you say that you have(read it)!Prevacid 101:
scroll to the last page of this post, (it’s actually also about other PPIs like prilosec, too)
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1are you breastfeeding or fomula feeding?what formula?how are poops? gas?do you have any zantac or pepcid? you can add that in, too- give 4hrs seperate from the prevacid…February 18, 2012 at 12:01 pm #69873AnonymousInactiveI have some Zantac which seems to do nothing!! I have been looking for the mylanta cherry supreme but am unable to find it anywhere! I’ve checked walmart cvs and walgreens and I’ve checked all the generics. I can’t find any that don’t contain aluminum! I have some adult pepcid but am not sure how to mix it up
February 18, 2012 at 12:05 pm #69874AnonymousInactiveSorry !! He has been on Alimentum for about 6 or 7 weeks. We tried all kinds of other formulas even elecare. He definitely does better on Alimentum than anything else. He keeps it down better and is less fussy. We are adding rice cereal to his bottle. I know there are conflicting views about this but that was at the advice of his GI
February 18, 2012 at 12:38 pm #69875hellbenntKeymasterif you must thicken (and do your research to find out if you even think you want to) then you can try oatmeal or barley. make sure to find cereal w/o any added milk protein or soy protein- it can be hidden! so look carefully at the ingredient list
zantac in addition to the prevacid may help- how much does baby weigh? I can help you calculate PROPER doseI would also try to make your own compound…February 18, 2012 at 12:57 pm #69876AnonymousInactiveHe’s 16lbs
February 18, 2012 at 5:13 pm #69878hellbenntKeymasterI will calculate for youmaximum zantac by weight is 10mgs per kilodo not just take my word on this!Zantac dosing– my/other’s question (has axid & pepcid doses, too):
https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=8288&PN=1
ok, so:16 lbs = 7.3 kilos10 x 7.3 = 73that’s 73mgs, total for the day of zantacyour bottle of liquid zantac says 15mgs/ml
this means that for every 1ml of liquid you give, there’s 15mgs of the medicine zantac in that 1ml of liquid
so: divide 73 by 15 = 4.9mls of zantac, total for the day
you can give in two doses & they do not have to be equal- you can give a higher portion/dose at night, making to seperate it 4 hrs from the prevacid
prevacid dose:1.25 to 1.5 mg/kg three times per day
(again: do not just take my word on this! https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2668)ok so low end is:1.25 x 7.3 = 9.2 mgs of prevacid x 3 times a day = 27.6mgs a day of prevacidhigh end is:1.5 x 7.3 = 11mgs of prevacid 3 times a day = 33mgs a day of prevacidFebruary 19, 2012 at 12:40 pm #69884AnonymousInactiveDo you think that maybe his prevacid dose isn’t high enough and that is why he’s still uncomfortable during the day. He eats fine no arching no screaming! He just has these random screaming fits thru the day and it’s definitely worse at night so when do you think would be the best time to give his meds?
February 20, 2012 at 11:36 am #69887hellbenntKeymasterwhat time is first thing in a.m?
what time is going to bed?these are times for PROPER prevacid dose and zanac goes in the middleFebruary 20, 2012 at 11:47 am #69889AnonymousInactiveWell today he has decided he doesn’t want to eat!!! So something is not working and I have no idea what to do anymore! His GI will not write for anything but Prevacid! I am about ready to take matters into my own hands!! I need suggestions and help!!
February 20, 2012 at 12:24 pm #69890hellbenntKeymasterTELL dr you need prescription for carafate. this med is a BAND-AID type of medication, just for times like this. it’s a super coating for the espohogus & help it heal.
then (disclaimer: I am not a medical professional, ‘just a self-proclaimed expert after being on this board and being in touch w/ Dr P for eight years): increase prevacidgive zantac, too.get this baby comfortable & eating. THEN you can back off of the meds, if possible…Caarafate:

https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=10620&KW=carafateFebruary 20, 2012 at 8:37 pm #69893AnonymousInactiveThank you for all your advice. I have been in constant contact with my GI speciailist. I talk to him at least once a week and he does not seem concerned at all. However I am because my little one is starting to scream even when he sees the bottle. I do not want him to develop a feeding aversion. He wants to keep him on compounded prevacid twice a day at 7.5 mg once in the am and once at night. He said that I should not be giving the Zantac, only give the prevacid. But I am giving him the Zantac anyway trying to make him as comfortable as possible. I gave little one 15 mg of Prevacid tonight hoping that would help some. He as a great eater until the last couple of weeks. He had a few days where he wasn’t eating two weeks ago, so I thought maybe his prevacid had lost it’s stability, so I threw out that bottle and got another bottle compounded from the pharmacy. This seemed to help him as the last two weeks he was eating again until two nights ago. Then he just started refusing again. Then today was worse. I put in a call to his GI doctor again today. I am sure he is tired of hearing from me!!! But I don’t know when he will call back or if he will!! In the meantime is there anything I can give him OTC that will help him?
February 20, 2012 at 8:46 pm #69894hellbenntKeymasteryou can get pepid OTC (same as zantac, in case you run out and can’t get more) and prevacid &Mylanta cherry supreme- you can’t find that kind, but you can try for rite aid brand or cvs brand or just keep trying the generic brands- you’re looking for the one variety w/o any aluminum…FAX FAX FAX the dr
stick to the FACTS (no emotions and ramblings)
state current meds, doses & symptoms
make request- flat out- short & sweet
provide pharmacist name & contact info
follow up by calling office to tell them fax was sent
call again later to discuss requests made in fax, ie:
is RX called in yet?

February 21, 2012 at 7:03 pm #69901AnonymousInactiveThe doctor called in carafate so I just got home with it! In your experience how long does it take before I will see if it’s doing anything for him??? Also he said to take him off his prevacid! Thoughts??
February 21, 2012 at 8:05 pm #69902hellbenntKeymasterforget your bleepin’ doctor. keep w/ the prevacid. space it from the carafate – however long the info in the links says to.
the carafate should be pretty immediate! I’d try to work out timing so carafate is before a feeding…baby should eat better after it, as it coats and soothes the esophogus… -
