Well we are still fighting a battle with C. Our 3rd GI consult finally sent him for a 24 hr ph probe. Everytime he woke up screaming, ph was in the 2-4 range and the nurse that discharged us told us to put him on meds right away since his reflux was bad(from reading our log). Then the Dr’s nurse called us and told us it was normal! and he had sensory issues. Well finally got that eval done and no sensory, but I still have a baby now 11 mths old wakes up screaming from a nap or throughout the night arching and screaming like someone is killing him. GI won’t return calls anymore and I don’t know where to go to get him help. He’s been starting to wheeze and cough a bit and last night he would scream on his left side but not on his right side. Now with the normal probe no one believes reflux, but it’s not like he’s cured! Any help?
September 7, 2011 at 4:34 pm #68982AnonymousInactiveWhat is stopping you from putting him on Prevacid, Priolosec or Zegerid yourself? They are all over the counter now. You can give it a 2 week trial to see if it helps him. If it does not then you can rule it out and continue to investigate.
September 7, 2011 at 4:55 pm #68983AnonymousInactivePicked up some Prevacid finally today at the store. Right now the biggest hurdle is trying to cut the pills and get the dose right.
September 7, 2011 at 5:18 pm #68984AnonymousInactiveGo to http://www.refluxsolutions.com and order caracream max or buffer babies. It will turn the over the count capsules into a liquid suspension allowing you to give the proper dosage. They ship really fast. It makes dosing and administration a snap. Saved my son from a feeding tube..
In the meantime if there is a CVS pharmacy near you, you can use the CVS brand aluminum free “Mylanta” Supreme. http://www.cvs.com/CVSApp/catalog/shop_product_detail.jsp?filterBy=&skuId=728124&productId=728124&navAction=jump&navCount=3It will give him relief. Also you can manage to find Pepcid AC EZ Chews that works well (is an H2 Blocker) until you can get the caracream. Its super hard to find though and should not be confused with Pepcid Complete.
September 9, 2011 at 10:58 am #68993AnonymousInactiveask for a copy of the report of the ph probe. also ask for a copy of the graph—-you have to make sure and tell them specifically that you want a copy of the ph probe graph or all you will geet is a report of the doctor’s interpretation of it. it is really interesting to look at the graph—you can see if’when his ph levels rose and fell. it might give you a little more insight as to what is going on. one dr.s version of normal might not be another dr.s version of normal. i try to get copies of all of my medical records and labwork whenever i have anything done.
September 16, 2011 at 2:03 pm #69049AnonymousInactiveI have copies of the graph and everything he’s had done. No one wants to review it and now after a neuro consult apparently I haven’t taught him to sleep, so that is why he is up sceaming bloody 45 – 90 mins after he falls asleep.
Caracream came so it’s been just over a week on the Prevacid. So far the forth of the screaming might be a little less, but not much change. It doesn’t help he has a cold now though. Thanks for the help.September 16, 2011 at 4:22 pm #69050AnonymousInactivecan you scan and send me a copy of the graph and the dr’s report?
September 16, 2011 at 4:42 pm #69051AnonymousInactiveSure, can you send me an email address to send it to?

September 18, 2011 at 9:55 pm #69067AnonymousInactiveit looks like your son is refluxing alot of times, but the refluxes are very short—i think that is why they are saying his test is normal. if i remember right, he had 90-something reflux episodes, but all of them were very short. sylvia had 97 episodes of reflux, but she had a number of prolonged episodes of reflux which added up to her refluxing almost 25% of the time. her longest episode lasted 44 minutes, while she was sleeping. her esophagus was getting ulcerated at 8 months old.
this ismy guess, and i am basing this on the fact that i have reflux myself, and also on a conversation that our ped gi and i had. reflux is uncomfortable even if it doesn’t burn. i have quite often felt like i had a lump in my throat or like something was caught in my throat. quite often i will feel reflux come up when i lean even just enough to make my bed. bending over, especially if it is soon after i have eaten, very often brings dinner back up. the other night i woke up with what tasted like vomit coming up into my mouth–not fun. what i am trying to say, is that even if your son is not getting any damage from the reflux and is not getting any actual pain from it, he could still be feeling it—and it is an uncomfortable feeling–even when it doesn’t hurt. the only way that they can tell us something doesn’t feel right, is to cry. so, your son’s fussiness could very well be caused by his reflux, even if it is not causing any damage and even if it isn’t actually “hurting”. i know that doesn’t help much, but it might explain his fussiness. i think i would try what the others have suggested, and give him the prevacid on your own and see if it helps to lessen the reflux episodes—because according to the report,he is definitely having reflux–it’s just not lasting long enough to cause any damage, but it could still feel uncomfortable. another idea, would be to find another ped gi, or even talk to your family doc and tell them that you know his reflux is not lasting long enough to cause any damage and probably not even any pain, but that you also know that reflux doesn’t “feel right” and since fussing is the only way he can let you know that, ask him if he would just humor you and put him on a trial of medication to see if it helps him.September 19, 2011 at 5:48 pm #69073AnonymousInactiveThanks for taking a look. We are 10 days into the Prevacid trial and last night he was definately less intense about waking up, not screaming as hard. So hopeful things will just continue to lessen and hopefully we can have a happy baby all the time.
September 19, 2011 at 7:00 pm #69074AnonymousInactivei’m glad to hear it is helping—my daughter has a newborn–about 8 weeks old, and he just keeps getting fussier all the time. i’ve tried to tell her to get him an appt with the ped gi—she lives in the same town as the ped gi that we love and has taken care of 4 of our other girls—but so far they seem to be trying to wait it out.
September 19, 2011 at 7:41 pm #69078AnonymousInactiveHoping they can find a solution soon. No reason to wait as long as we did.
