Caitlin is 5month old, 12 lbs, was on 12mg prilosec/day, helap a bit but still refusing to eat after 2oz of formula. Now we decided to put her on 24mg/day. Is this seems too much for her for it’s a normal dose. Thanks

No, that should not be too high for her. PPIs like Prilosec are next to imposssible to overdose on and they have a very low incidence of side-effects. What form of Prilosec are you using? Is it a liquid compound made by your pharmacy? If so, is it flavored? These compounds should not be flavored and often do not contain enough buffer. Make sure that they make it without any flavoring and with 16.8% sodium bicarbonate. This will ensure its stability and effectiveness. Are you giving just one dose per day or are you splitting it up into 2 or 3 doses. You should split up the doses as infants metabolize these drugs more quickly and need more frequent doses. Also, you should make sure that you are giving it to her on an empty stomach and 30 minutes before a full meal. All of these things will help significantly. Let me know if you have any questions.

joel help!! my three month old daughter just began prilosec at 5 mg. once a day. this from a reluctant pedi., who does not really buy that i firmly believe my daughter has sandifer’s. at long last i saw the symptoms listed and could not believe it. i have a pedi. gi. specialist appointment in two weeks. so far, at day four the prilosec is barely getting at the reflux symptoms and not at all at the sandifer’s (head turning etc.) i noted that some kids are on zantac and ppi. how do you determine if this is necessary or helpful? -elaine

also: have you heard of cranial sacral tx or chiropractic tx being helpful?

Just wanted to add that if it is a compound, it is possible that it can be “unflavoured”, but still have ingredients that will degrade the drug. Two such ingredients are stevia powder and simple/sweet syrup. Just something to beware…we have been on such a compound for 6 months and my daughter still has problems so it makes you wonder…
