Hi there!
Hoping for some help. My son has been what I thought refluxing for a few months, symptoms :13 days stopped breathingFailure to thrive – 6mths 5.5kgGagging/choking episodesPossettingConstant hiccupsExcessively droolingScreaming / irritable constantlyChronic DiarreohaArching backHe has been in and out of hospital for months (we are in W.Australia), they thus far have done barium swallow (normal) bloods (high platelets but okay otherwise) and he just had a ph probe. During this probe his numbers were around 7.8 and he was still doing his usual crying/arching etc etc but didnt reflect reflux? They now want to do an upper endo, but what im not sure about is a couple of things, if he didnt reflux with probe in, will the endo show anything? If he doesnt reflux whilst the endo is in does it therefore not show anything?Does the endo only come up with something if the baby refluxes during the endo? Thanks so much!!!July 28, 2011 at 12:44 am #68731AnonymousInactivedid you get a copy of the report from his ph probe? make sure and ask for a copy of the graph, not just the doctors report—if you don’t ask specifically for the graph, all you will get is a copy of the doc’s report.
the endo can show all kinds of things—i would definitely have it done. i would show whether or not his esohpagus has inflamation, it can show eosinophils (allergic cells) it can show esophageal thrush. these are all thing s that either my children or i (or both) have had show up with endos.how long ago was his ph probe done?July 28, 2011 at 12:47 am #68732AnonymousInactiveHi Christine thanks for getting back to me, i havent got report or graph back yet???
His probe was done about 2.5weeks ago and waiting for GI for upper endo. He has his good days in between but is only catnapping these days….Thanks so much!!July 28, 2011 at 6:36 pm #68737AnonymousInactiveif you haven’t gotten the report back, did the doc tell you that the ph probe was normal, or are you just going off of what you saw on the monitor yourself while the test was being done? sylvia had 97 episodes of reflux when she had her ph probe done—but i sure never saw that many just by looking at the monitor. more signifigant then the number of episodes she had was the fact that she had a number of prolonged episodes—i think anything that lasts over 7 minutes is considered prolonged. i never noticed a prolonged episode when i watched the monitor. her longest episode was 44 minutes long. it was during the night and she slept right through it. sometimes while i watched the monitor i could see that she was dropping into acid levels and she didn’t even flinche—like it didn’t even bother her—in fact, it seems like she seemed to do better than usual while the probe was in. we had to stay at the hospital because we were out of town, so maybe there was enought to distract her. it turned out her esophagus was getting ulcerated at only 8 months—so it is amazing that she didn’t even act like she noticed when she was refluxing acid into her very raw esophagus. but, like the doctor pointed out to me, it was all she had ever known.
you will have to ask for a copy of the report and the graph. i just thought it was interesting to look at the graph and see how the acid levels went up and down.i am so glad we had both the ph probe and the endo done—i had no idea how bad sylvia’s reflux really was until we got the tests were done and we got the results back. our ped gi called us within the next week after her tests were done. as he was talking to me, the realization of what he was telling me sunk in and i finally said, “she’s not going to get better without surgery, is she?” he told me no, and that he was sorry. he referred us to the surgeon and she had a fundo about a week before she turned 10 months old—turned out she had a hiatal hernia that had not shown up during any of her testing.July 28, 2011 at 7:22 pm #68738AnonymousInactiveHi Kevin
I just wasnt sure if the ph came back negative whether an endo would actually show anything?I have app. with GI today so hopefully will no more about results then. He has had double bloods taken last week after a sweat test for cystic fibrosis (neg) and an emergency renal ultrasound as he had no vitamin D and calcium levels were low, he hasnt grown in 3 months! He is now on vit d three times a day for 6 weeks (living in Australia vit d deficiency is VERY rare)renal came up fine, so waiting for GI for next step. trying to give neocate to help with weight but as this stinks and tastes dreadfully it is not going very successfully, so looking to tube feed this to him instead. The negative from the probe was the indication i got from his paed as well as looking at it myself, when he did drop his acid levels he didnt flinch but when they were high he carried on his usual symptoms the lowest i saw it go was about 5.5.thanks so much for your help!December 11, 2011 at 5:58 am #69546AnonymousInactiveHi i am the mum to 2 refluxers one being 9yr old and the other nearly 5yr old they both girls. My eldest daughter wasn’t diagnosed until she was 7yrs old and like one of the ladies on here she also didn’t flinch and her acid levels were as low as 2 she was constantly at 4 over night but when she drunk and hate they went as low as 2. She had endoscopy which showed damage so they did the fundo on her just waiting for her to go to have another barium meal now to see if it has worked as she still clearing her throat.
My youngest is still medicated 20mg and has been since the age of 1 i struggled to get her diagnosed as she was putting on weight. She was really bad it realy affected her sleep. Her ph study was just done a few months ago it showed also when she hate and drink it was very acidy and she was having spikes but hers is now more through the day but i give her medication at night as that was when she suffered more but endoscopy showed everything ok so medication working thank god.
