I had a very frustrating GI appointment yesterday and I just need to vent. After being on Elecare for a month my son started having mucus in his stool. I was told to give it three weeks and come back if he was still having the problem. So I made the appointment and was told to bring in a sample. The doctor ignores the mucus and starts discussing DS’s weight. I bring up the sample and tell the Dr. that his bowel movements are so caustic they will irritate his skin to the point of him bleeding. He tells me to use desitin. He gives me 2 cans of Neocate and tells me to try that. He gets ready to leave and I ask him if he wants the stool sample, he looks at it, comments about the mucus and tosses it.
I had hoped he would run some tests on the stools sample or something. Why is he still having a mucus problem when he has never had it before? Why is he blowing off the mucus like it is no big deal. Am I wrong, is the mucus no big deal? I feel like a crappy parent because my poor son’s bum and boy parts are soo sore that they bleed unless we use a thick layer of vasolene constantly.
If the mucus is no big deal, please someone tell me. I am worried that there is some underlying issue that is just waiting to rear its ugly head and the mucus is a symptom of it.

hugs!the mucous may not upset me as much as the irritation the stool seems to be causing…try the neocate…you might also want to try prevacid w/ bufferbabies? some babies react to ingredients in the solutabs…just trying to rule everything out…January 7, 2011 at 8:11 pm #67514AnonymousInactivemucous in the stool isn’t necessarily a problem. sometimes it is just that the intestines are irritated. this is more information than you probably want—but i regularly have mucouse in mty stools—and often there is a little bit of blood in it—-but—i take a number or medications that keep me in a constant battle with constipation—and it got worse when i had to go back on prevacid. i don’t worry about it because i think that the constipation keepst intestines irritated—i also wonder if it is what keeps me just above the levels of being awful close to looking anemic. sometimes i pass nothing BUT mucous.
soooo, i think that mucous CAN be a symptom of a problem, but it can also mean nothing in particular except a little irritation.
you can try putting crisco shortening really thick on the areas that are irritated and bleeding and then dusting it with cornstarch to help protect your little one’s behind. i know it sounds weird–but i have atopic dermatitis and was told by a specialist that if i didn’y have any bother lotion that i could rub crisco into my hands under a small stream of water (to help add some moisture). they also told me i could rub crisco all over my hands before i handled raw fruits and vegetables since the acids in them would actually eat away at my skin.January 13, 2011 at 12:10 am #67566AnonymousInactiveThanks for the info Kevieb. I will seriously consider trying the crisco. I thought I would give an update. We tried the Neocate over the weekend, it was a disaster. My LO went from eating about 28 oz. a day to between 16 to 20 oz. He wouldn’t really eat even though we tried to slowly introduce the neocate. I knew we had a weigh in session on Wednesday and I didn’t want the weight lecture, so back to Elecare. He still has lots of mucus and has even started spitting up mucus now. We have another appointment with his GI in a week, if he is still not showing concern about the mucus problem; the following week when we see his pediatrician I will be getting a referral to a new GI. I sincerely believe that the mucus in his stool is because his BM’s are very acidic which is why his little bum is soo irritated.
