HI everyone – My son is 20 months old and we have battling reflex since he was an infant. He has gone through several meds (axid and prevacid). Prev. worked for awhile but the reflexing and forceful vomitting started again. He is now on 30ml of prevacid a day, still has what I call ATTACKS (thrashing around in pain) and we also give him malox for these episodes. He is still vomitting and I just can not get this back under control. Endoscopy was normal, now we are having x-rays done next.
Can someone please tell me if we are missing something?? I just feel so lost and I want to help him.
December 17, 2009 at 5:44 pm #65154hellbenntKeymasterwelcome!
the key to all of this is research & of course support!
30 MLs a day or 30 MGs a day?
what form of prevacid?
if you haven’t already, please read
Prevacid 101, it’s the last post on the page

Is he MSPI (intolerant to milk and soy?) have you intro’d anything new that he could be reacting to? We had reflux “flare ups” with any food that landen couldn’t tolerate so as he got older and we gave him new foods, we’d quickly find out what they were. Also, teething was another flare factor for us, could he be getting 2 yr molars?
There is a test called a “milk scan” (and that is a generic term, I cant think of the medical test name) that would show if he has delayed gastric emptying (DGE). Other than intolerances, I might look into DGE or some sort of motility disorder. (((hugs)))
December 20, 2009 at 10:30 am #65188AnonymousInactiveI was going to say something like Jill said… sounds like he may have an allergy/intolerance to something that is causing his problem. He is old enough that you could do some allergy testing. May not be the most accurate, but would at least give you an idea where to start.
December 20, 2009 at 3:13 pm #65192AnonymousInactiveThanks for all the feedback! He is on 30mg of Prevacid (tabs), not ML’S.
He had all these symptoms from the time he was born. We swicthed him to soy when he was an infant and elimated all dairy products, however he still needed the medication. At age one, we switched him over to whole milk.I never thought he could be intolerant to both soy and milk. How do the probiotics and digestive enzymes help? Should I look into this too? Thanks so much!!!Julie 🙂December 22, 2009 at 2:26 pm #65214AnonymousInactiveHi Julie,
A lot of babies that are intolerant to milk are also intolerant to soy. It usually goes hand in hand, although there are some that do ok on soy. Have you thought about switching to regular soymilk (like silk) to see if his condition improves? or even coconut or rice milk? There are a lot of good alternative milks out there aside from cow’s milk. You can talk to your doc about to see if the refluxing improves. A lot of the time, diet is the culprit!Probiotics keep “good bacteria” in the gut and I notice that my boys are less constipated when on them. 70% of the immune system is in the gut, so I think it’s a good idea in general to keep the gut “healthy”. So many of our babies go on antibiotics at an early age that wipes out the healthy bacteria…and we need to put it back in there. 🙂Digestive enzymes are more like an aid in breaking down food protiens. They have really helped my younger son who has severe protein intolerance to milk, soy, pork, banana, rice and now we think nut and chocolate. We give him digestive enzymes before he eats, ESPECIALLY if we are going out to eat b/c we cannot guarantee exactly what is in the food even if we are told it is “free” of something.Kirkman labs website has a lot of info on probiotics and digestive enzymes for kids. You might want to check it out! I know a lot of moms on here that use them as well and love them!I hope this helps!December 22, 2009 at 8:47 pm #65222AnonymousInactiveI 2nd everything Jill had to say! Another alternative to milk is Hemp milk by Living Harvest. I’ll copy & paste some info that I’ve shared before…
“Hemp milk(DAIRY & SOY FREE • VEGAN • TREE NUT FREE • GLUTEN FREE
CHOLESTEROL FREE • NON-GMO • KOSHER • LOW SODIUM
Hemp contains no known allergens). It is full of omega 3 & 6 fatty acids. Plus it contains the same amount of calcium/vitamin D that whole milk does. My DD’s Ped was very pleased w/the nutritional value hemp milk offered. Of course, we also do vitamins to ensure she’s getting anything else she may be missing. I’ll post a link to the website. They are many flavors too. Each one lists it’s ingredients and the unsweetened versions don’t contain brown rice syrup(for LOs who can’t tolerate rice).HTH!”Another question…Is his prevacid split into 2/3 doses per day? If not, this is another thing I’d consider doing in addition to investigating the possibility of allergy/intolerance.HTH!December 23, 2009 at 10:32 am #65229AnonymousInactiveAmber and Jill – Thank you both for the great inforamtion! I feel like this is giving me a start. 🙂
I am going to switch his milk and see what happens. I recently took chocolate and tomotoe foods out of his diet and I am seeing a little improvement, which is good. I am noticing most of the vomiting after intake of milk though, so I am now on the right track.
Did either one of you work with a dietician?
December 23, 2009 at 10:00 pm #65232AnonymousInactivefor my son we did rice milk.. and this was the advice of his GI doctor. all they said to do was add a couple teaspoons of olive oil to it! .. to help with the fat..
but i would do either coconut milk or hemp milk instead (they didnt have those a couple years ago.. or they did and i didnt know! )December 24, 2009 at 8:19 am #65234AnonymousInactiveOur dietician had us adding flax seed oil for calories. Only thing is that it doesn’t taste so great, and can make for more frequent pooping! This was good for us as my dd was the constipation queen.
But your son is almost two, so I would think that you could try any milk you want at this point and not worry too much about nutrients and fat. There are so many other sources of these things. Just my opinion though. Good luck.December 27, 2009 at 1:48 pm #65238hellbenntKeymasterhttps://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=8970&PN=1
the above link is for info about probiotics and I think that there is info about enzymes, too -
