My 14 month old has been on Neocate and breastmilk, but our GI wants us to try whole milk slowly to replace the Neocate. I am interested in how others have introduced dairy to their food-intolerant toddlers. I’ve decided to start with yogurt instead, he had a teaspoon yesterday and so far so good. After a week I guess I’ll try a little bit of milk. If milk fails though, what are our options? I’ve heard that rice milk has too much arsenic in it for babies. Neocate is really expensive. I’m not thrilled about soy. There is a powder called Toddler Health, has anyone used that?
Also I’ve been off dairy, egg, soy, wheat/gluten, red meat, fish, seafood, and all nuts for about a year. Now that I’m weaning, I cannot wait to eat a piece of cheese, but I’ve heard that I may not be able to digest dairy after a year without. Any suggestions on how to re-introduce dairy into my diet? Should I get enzymes specific for dairy or something broader?
BTW Evan is finally off of Prevacid as of last week, yay.
Thanks!

When I intro’d yogurt to my 15mth old(@ the time), she tolerated the “spoonful” just fine. BUT when I eventually gave her more, she didn’t tolerate it at all. So, my suggestion would be to stick w/the yogurt and increase every couple of days until he’s able to tolerate the whole thing(the small sized container). If he does fine, then I’d slowly intro the milk. We’ve just recently(now she’s 18.5 months old) been able to tolerate an entire container of yogurt(small size). So, I’m still very hesitant to intro milk yet.As far as what other options…Well, I would have said rice milk(my DD is currently on it). After reading about the arsenic, now I’m not sure. Thankfully my DD has a check-up on Mon. & I’m going to ask her Ped about it then. In the meantime we also supplement w/hemp milk. I’ve only heard good things about it(hemp milk). So, maybe that’s an option. 🙂 I will say though…it’s expensive($5/32oz). The commissary here carries rice milk for the half the price($2.30/32oz) so I hope the whole arsenic thing isn’t true.Oh, and you mentioned Toddler Health…well, it is a rice based powder. So, going off of the study, I’d say that’s a “no-no” too(due to arsenic). Who knows…the study also says that rice cereal for infants is laced w/arsenic.Like I said, I’ll be talking w/the Ped on Mon. :):):)Also, keep some prevacid on hand in case the dairy trial fails. Good Luck & thanks for that info. regarding arsenic.valentine4mommy2009-08-15 14:17:35

so I don’t know about arsenic, etc…but: there are ‘other’ milks such as hemp milk, oat milk and potato milk…there’s even almond milk for toddlers who haven’t had reactions to nuts… -
