DD has had a hoarse voice for over a month now. We took her to the ped and he put her on Prevacid (previously on Axid w/ no improvement). She’s MFPI (multiple food protein intolerant) and is on Alim RTF. She’s had slow to no weight gain since she was 3 months (weighs 16.5 lbs at 10 mos) and is scheduled for a barium swallow and a reflux test next THurs. Anyway, she’s been on Prevacid for about 4 weeks and still has a hoarse voice. I would think it would be healed now (7.5mg prev 2x’s/day). I’m wondering if it’s the Alim causing her to have the reflux (allergy induced reflux).
I’m worried that her hoarse voice is a sign of severe damage from uncontrolled reflux. Has anyone else experienced this?
TIA

Mom to Jos 10/22/08 MFPI on Alim RTF and Prevacid 7.5 2x’s/day. Still trying to figure out low food intake, hoarse voice, and low weight gain.August 14, 2009 at 5:41 pm #63570hellbenntKeymasterhi & welcome! you’ve found a great place! if it’s MFPI then you might want to try neocate or elecare AND
research the proper PPI dose- her dose might be too low…
the key to all of this is RESEARCH and, of course, support!
http://www.marci-kids.com is at the FOREFRONT of research of PPI use and dosing in infants/todders. You might want to start there to see if PPI dose is ‘proper’
then, hop back here to learn HOW to get that proper dose, if need be, and what FORM of PPI and HOW to administer…
Prevacid 101(last post on the page): https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1
unfortunately the majority of drs & pharmacists don’t know…babies metabolisms’ are much faster than adults, so the drugs work differently with them…
after medication, you might then want to look at diet…
I have a LOT MORE TO SAY! and most of it is here: Groupie Intro: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853
it’s looong, but PLEASE read/skim/scroll through it & refer back to it, as it TRULY will help you!
so glad you found us!

ps: when you get a moment, please go to the upper right-hand corner of this screen and click on ‘settings’ and from there you can edit your signature and let us know how old baby is, what formula or breastfeeding, MSPI or not, what meds and what doses and form of meds and how you’re administering-thanks!
August 15, 2009 at 2:34 pm #63581AnonymousInactiveAlimentum does contain milk PROTEIN. So, it’s very possible that you’re LO is still reacting. I’d consider switching to an amino acid based formula(elecare, neocate, etc). Good Luck!
August 15, 2009 at 9:51 pm #63592AnonymousInactiveI would definitely try Elecare or Neocate. My little one does much better on this and actually if you order it through the company it is not that much more than the Alimentum RTF and is way worth it. Also My little one loses weight on ready to feed formula simply because it is mixed to 20 calorie per oz. We mix our Elecare up to 26 calorie per oz and that makes a huge difference. My son couldn’t tolerate the increased calorie formula of anything but Elecare. We use one scoop of the vanilla flavored Elecare and two scoops of unflavored and it doesn’t actually doesn’t taste very bad. My son is also on a MARCI kids dose of Prevacid but when we were on the 15 mg of Prevacid splitting it made it worse. Holden did best on one full dose of Prevacid. Then you can always throw in an H2 blocker or just try Mylanta in the PM. The whole medicine thing is trial and error for most.
August 17, 2009 at 2:50 pm #63606AnonymousInactiveThanks for the suggestions. I guess I was hoping at 10 mos that she would be outgrowing any protein allergies, but maybe not. I’ve been thinking about neocate lately, but hesitant to change formulas when she’s drinking better than she ever has been (still not great, obviously).
August 17, 2009 at 4:31 pm #63608AnonymousInactivejust another thought here, but i have such a low voice that i have been asked so many times during my lifetime if i have a cold—my sister has been asked even more than i have. my molly used to have the cutest little croaky voice when she was little—and it was just her voice. i remember people commenting on it because they loved it. i had forgotten what she sounded like until i happened to be watching an old video from when she was little. i also have a niece with a voice that sounds hoarse, too.
if you don’t come up with anything else, it just may be the way her voice is and will probably change somewhat over time.August 18, 2009 at 10:27 am #63622AnonymousInactiveHer voice was “normal” until about six weeks ago. She lost it completely and it’s just never recovered fully. If she cries or even fusses at night it gets worse. She hasn’t had any cold symptoms throughout all this. So, that being said, I don’t think it’s just a cute Punky Brewster voice but if it were she could have serious rock star potential in her future (;
August 18, 2009 at 5:45 pm #63632hellbenntKeymasterjonah lost his voice at the height of the reflux hell he went through…
it got better, though…he finally, after that incident, was properly medicated…August 19, 2009 at 9:49 am #63637AnonymousInactiveI hope hers gets better soon so we can avoid a scope.
