InactiveHi ladies. I need to vent. I can’t stop crying after my DD’s pedi GI doc appt a few hours ago. DD has suffered from reflux since birth. She’s 14 months old now. She was doing great on prevacid, and then within days of her first birthday (and the day we started giving cow’s milk), she had a major flare-up of reflux. Our pedi upped her prevacid to 30 mg a day and it worked wonders within 2 days. NOW, a pedi GI tells me she thinks it is milk allergy. I know this doesn’t sound surprising, but I AM SO FRUSTRATED. HOW IS IT THAT NO OTHER SO-CALLED DOCTOR TOLD ME THIS COULD BE MILK ALLERGY????????? She told me that reflux itself can be the only symptom of milk allergy in some kids.
I am so frustrated because I cannot take this anymore. My DD is always miserable, high needs, crying, unhappy. She cried in the waiting room for 1 hour before we saw the doc. I am so sad and having a hard time coping with a high needs baby, regardless of reflux/milk allergy. I am upset that I didn’t realize this could be a milk allergy. DD has gained weight perfectly, had no blood in stool or showed other symptoms. She has been sick A LOT with colds and respiratory issues, but I assumed it was from daycare. I didn’t know it was a symptom. DD also had constipation at birth, but putting her on Nutramigen totally cleared it up.Thanks for just letting me vent. I feel so beat-down right now and I just needed someone to listen. I haven’t even begun to think about how we are going to manage milk allergy. We did Rice Milk with our oldest who couldn’t do Milk at a year and still does Rice milk. He can do some cheese and other dairy in small doses, but he also had no blood in stool, et.c… he was just SOOOOO fussy and uncomfortable with lots of reflux.

We are all here for you~ and you will be amazed how soon your LO will feel better when you cut out the milk….June 23, 2009 at 4:15 pm #63027InactiveWe did rice milk for ds#1 b/c of milk and soy allergies. With ds#2 he is over a year and still on alimentum for milk, egg and peanut allergies. We really just learned to adjust both of their diets to omit the offending foods and replace with something else. There was a great thread here listing “safe” foods that was a lifesaver. Also ds#1 went back on formula to help with weight gain issues and is still on it at 4 years old. I have no intention of taking ds#2 off of formula any time soon b/c of his allergies. We actually had the ped’s office ask today if we wanted to trial ds#2 on the offending foods and I told them I am in no rush to see hives again lol.
June 23, 2009 at 5:49 pm #63028InactiveHang in there. I would try either soy or rice milk (soy if you are positive there are no problems with soy) and then check out the safe food link. The good thing about a milk allergy is that many babies out grow it and if you avoid it totally they have a better chance. Sorry noone told you sooner that it might be the problem. My LO was so congested last year after we started milk that I was convinced he had an allergy and that was his only symptom until we went to the beach and he was fine but still drinking milk, ours turned out to be lots of environmental stuff and an egg allergy (which thank goodness I had never given him eggs!) But stay positive and as Sarah said you just learn to adjust to omit the offending foods. Luckily your lo is so young it shouldn’t be much of an issue! Good Luck.
