Im a mommy to a 2year old boy who also has GERD reflux and we have come along way…. in the midst of all the puking i told myself no more kids, but now that he is getting better and it gone from all day vomitting to 1-2 times a week vomitting, i am thinking of having another baby. The only thing is that i have been hearing from people that some people have all of their kids with reflux? is this like a hereditary pattern, or is it a fluke thing?

or can something be done while pregnant to prevent reflux in our babies? I have this guilty feeling that it was something i ate or did that cause my poor baby to suffer as a baby! anyone know?

I am here to say that my ds1 was born w/ SEVERE GERD and ds2 was reflux free!

I think that if your ds1 had MSPI then what you can do is to go on either the TED diet (if you’re going to breastfeed) for the last 2 or 3 weeks of pregnancy or ‘just’ cut out all milk & soy proteins from your diet at the end of your pregnancy.

Shelby JUST posted about this: she had baby #3 after having ds1 AND ds2 w/ reflux. THEIR reflux was MSPI and she cut out dairy for her entire pregnancy and continued this way after ds3 was born & even consulted a kinestheologist for him & she’s happy to report that he is reflux free:

if your ds1 was NOT mspi, then there’s not much to try…I think it might be heredetary and it might just be luck of the draw, like in my case…

My DS1 was so much more severe than DS2 and I also think it was because I had so much knowledge of what to do, who to call, and then the docs didn’t treat me like that “first time mom” thing they do until they decide to believe you that there is really something going on… I think you will be fine! Also with DS2, I knew that there was an end at some point so it was so much more tolerable where with DS1, I thought I was going to live in that hell forever!!!!!

Hang in there! Our boys are three years apart for the same reason, we didn’t know if we could do it again, but I love having them 3 years apart! It is a great age span!!!!

I’ll tell you what our ped gi told us. He said we had a 50% chance if we had another child of having another reflux baby. Now my son had MSPI so I am guessing that it is a 50% chance that another will have MSPI and therefore reflux, but still a 50% chance that if we have another that it will be happy healthy and reflux free! If you are feeling it then go for it! They will grow out of it eventually and are such a joy when they finally are happy! Good Luck.

I have two sons, both had reflux. For us, it has been hereditary. I don’t think that reflux is caused by anything the mother does while pregnant. For whatever reason(s) some kids end up with it. I’m sitting here listening to my boys play video games in the next room — they are laughing and having a good time. 🙂 I’m so glad I had them, I wish they wouldn’t have had reflux, but I cannot imagine life without them! Best wishes!!!

both of mine ended up having it as well. and the funny thing is.. is that my mom says i had it as a baby.. but they didnt really pay attention to it back then.

i think its hereditary.. maybe avoid dairy and soy near the end of your pregnancy if you are going to breastfeed. only because most of the reflux kids are mspi as well.
