Hi everyone! A little background: My daughter is now 5 months, 12 pounds, been through Zantac, Losec, Prevacid,Bethanacol, and Reglan. We thought we were getting somewhere with the Prevacid, but then she began to have terrible stomach spasms through the day and night. Once we stopped the Prevacid, her spasms died down.
Starting about a month ago, she would refuse feeds for up to 8 hours, one time even going 14. It was always a hassle to get her to nurse. Finally a week ago, she accepted a bottle of pumped milk. Still, she had terrible gas and would wake up every 30 min. to an hour at night.
I have cut out dairy, soy (except for ‘traces of’), eggs, beef, and nuts. She is still having stinky gas and always strains to poop. She’s constantly drawing up her legs and crying. She doesn’t have diarrhea anymore, but I’m concerned about the gas and pain.
I tried her on Alimentum for the first time yesterday. She would only take a couple of ounces at feedings, and acted so fussy in between. She did sleep much better, but her diapers were never very wet. After she continued acting sluggish and fussy and her reflux became worse, I decided to hold off (don’t know if that’s the right decision).
She guzzled down 4.5 oz of breastmilk at her last feeding.
I’m so frustrated because I don’t know what to do. I would love to continue to nurse her, she does well on breastmilk beyond the gas. I’ve already lost 20 pounds and counting from the limited diet. Should I try cutting out wheat too? I just know that doesn’t leave me much to eat.
My father just sent over (we live in HK) some bentyl. Any experiences with that? Wondering if it will help with the gas?
Sorry for all the venting. I just want my little one to be able to rest. She really is so happy when she’s not in pain.
C-Mommy 2009-04-29 01:41:48 April 29, 2009 at 7:45 pm #62333hellbenntKeymasterI would try the TED (total elimination diet). you’ve already cut out milk protein. now cut out all soy protein and eat whatever is left for the diet (off the top of my head it’s squash, rice, pears, free-range ground turkey and lamb- I think there’s potatos and also maybe sweet potatos). Check out the TED Forum…it’s all there…maybe try prevacid again, but this time with bufferbabies. they will send it to you from the states: contact http://www.marci-kids.com
what kind of prevacid was she reacting to? if it’s the solutabs, this can happen…if it was a liquid made by your pharmacy then that might have been the problem?the stinky gas and straining sounds like a food intolerance. I would try to stick it out w/ breastfeeding, since it sounds like that’s what you want and that’s what’s been working best…hang in there! you can do it!hellbennt2009-04-29 19:46:31
April 30, 2009 at 9:40 am #62334AnonymousInactiveStraining to poop is sometimes related to constipation. If they hold it in then their poop hardens up and the stinky gas is from that. How often does she poop?
April 30, 2009 at 10:17 am #62335AnonymousInactiveThank you for the encouragement! I started the TED today. I’m already sick of pears. haha. Hoping I can make it through :).
Jaya reacted to the Prevacid solutabs. She also had the same reaction to Losec that I dissolved in breastmilk.
Since I started the formula, she’s been terribly constipated. I can tell a difference between this and her fussiness on breastmilk. She’s always had a hard time pooping, though. When we took her to the doc once when her crying lasted several hours, she did an x-ray and ultrasound, and Jaya’s bowel was 3 times the normal size, full of gas and stool. C-Mommy2009-04-30 10:18:59

April 30, 2009 at 9:01 pm #62346hellbenntKeymasterC-mommy & morrisonkm9: there are links in the Medicine Forum- top links (called ‘stickied’ as they are stickied to the top of the forum) to help understand about the meds. look for ‘prevaicd 101’ (& others) hellbennt2009-04-30 21:01:26
May 3, 2009 at 9:14 pm #62385AnonymousInactiveSo far, on the TED, she’s napping MUCH better. Throughout the day and night, though, she’s constantly making a grunting sound and tightening up her abdomen. I talked with a doc in the States on the phone this past week and he said he’s seen infants who do this even when they don’t need to poop. Does anyone know what causes this?
May 3, 2009 at 10:45 pm #62388hellbenntKeymasterI’m not sure what causes it, but it does happen. it’s GI distress of some sort…see if it lessens as you progress on the diet? if you do a search for
stomach crunchesyou’ll see you’re not the first one to be curious about this…search OLD posts, so definitely 6 months and OLDERok here’s some posts:hellbennt2009-05-03 22:51:51
