So I started doing Prevacid every other day. She was great all day yesterday until last night! She woke up a lot and won’t go to sleep. I felt terrible. I think she needs something. I gave her 1 ml of Mylanta Cherry supreme at about 4 pm yesterday but I think she needs like Zantac or Axid something at night for bedtime!
This morning I gave her the regular dose of Prevacid again. It’s so hard bec. she can’t really tell me what’s up. I didn’t see any other symptoms except the lack of sleep. She is also teething or so I think so that could be it too.I’m kind of bummed now. Should I give her Zantac on the days she doesn’t have the Prevacid? She has a prescription for it but the GI said no. The script is from my DD’s pediatrician. She’s 17 months old and I’m trying to wean her off Prevacid. She’s been on Prevacid for over 14 months. The thing is I don’t like how Zantac has a little alcohol and not to mention peppermint which I read aggravates reflux. I have reflux and I avoid anything peppermint or anything minty.Thanks.February 27, 2009 at 7:42 am #61314AnonymousInactiveWhy are you weaning the prevacid? If she needs it, then I’d keep her on it for as long as she does. Our ped Gi said up to 10 years if needed. hailey was on almost 3 years. Also, for weaning in general, I would reduce the daily dose by a bit each time instead of skipping a day. For example, if she takes 7.5mg twice a day then I’d either half each dose, or cut a dose. I’m not sure if she’s only on 7.5mg a day at 17 months. If so, then my guess is that the prevacid probably isn’t doing much anyhow. That’s the typical dose for an infant I believe.
About zantac- in the US you can get pepcid, or also the efferdose. Good luck.February 27, 2009 at 12:30 pm #61316AnonymousInactiveSkipping a day is what the GI doc recommended and also she said to try and wean. You won’t know until u try I guess. I am currently using Buffer Babies with Prevacid and the recommended min. dose is no less than 4ml (10mg). So if I lessen it, it may not work. Our GI explained to me(I already knew it anyway) that when they take these PPIs that their stomach compensate by making more acid so when you take the PPI away to also do it gradually. She also said that she has scoped toddlers and she has found stomach polyps(benign) and also found those taking PPIs long-term to have iron, B12 and other vitamin/mineral deficiency. I hope I’m explaining it the way she explained it. We had my DD’s iron checked, she is fine, the B12 will be checked at her 18 month appointment.
Yeah she takes 7.5mg a day. It helps a lot. Also our pharmacist and also the makers of Prevacid said that the solutabs are not really accurate as far as dosing if u have to cut it in half. I was told the granules settle where they settle, they can’t predict if the half u gave your LO will have 10 mg or 7.5 mg. That would be fine if you are always giving the same like if u give the same half from the day before. But this is not accurate when you are trying to wean. Am I making sense? So now the doc gave us capsules and that’s what is in the Buffer Babies.Sorry this is long and confusing! I’ll check on Pepcid and efferdose. I paid over $30 for a small bottle of Zantac and she won’t even take it!ThanksTheaI have lots of reasons to try and wean her: price, side effects(I used it too), etc. etc.Precious2009-02-27 12:31:38
