If it’s truly reflux and you start something like prevacid…if you still have some painful hiccups, arching/screaming, painful spitting up (but at a lesser rate) does this mean it isn’t reflux? Or that something else is going on? Or can you be on meds and still have symptoms? I am so confused about if the prevacid is blocking hte acid production, what is so painful to him that makes him arch/scream and paiful hiccups (mucousy spit up as well)? Or is it commonto have good and bad days even though they are on meds? I’ve had people tell me that “oh we started meds and he was a totally differnt baby, so happy and no pain.” that hasn’t happened for us.
February 25, 2009 at 8:52 am #61260AnonymousInactiveI would have to say that once you’re on the right med and the right dose, then you shouldn’t have any pain associated w/hiccups, feedings, etc. Sorry, but I don’t remember if you’ve discussed possibly allergies or intolerance issues. That may also be something to look into since your LO is on a milk based formula. Also, is zantac the only med your LO is on? If so, this could be the problem. Zantac doesn’t do much for a lot of LOs and it’s very weight sensitive(dose needing to be increased perweight gain). I would suggest getting on a PPI(prevacid, zegerid, nexium, prilosec). Also, your signature states that your DS has DGE…Is he on any meds for that? I wouldn’t think there was anything other than reflux based on your DSs symptoms, but you’d be better able to determine that once you’re on a good med/high enough dose and formula combo. When is your GI appt? Maybe gp to the Ped or even a family Dr. and ask for a PPI in the meantime?!
ETA: Sorry, I just saw that your LO is also on prilosec. I’m assuming it’s a compound? My DD was also on this to begin w/and she cont. to have reflux pain until we finally switched to prevacid solutabs. I would think that a med switch would do wonders for your LO.valentine4mommy2009-02-25 08:53:35
February 25, 2009 at 9:10 am #61261AnonymousInactiveOh vey. Let me start over and correct myself! My siggy is from 3 yr ago when i was dealing with DS#1’s reflux. Since then, DS#1 STILL deals with reflux (on prevacid) and has been dx with DGE (no meds given for this) and recently dx with Crohn’s disease at CHOP (on pentasa).
I was posting about DS#2 is is ONLY 4weeks old. I am doing this all over again. DS#2 is exclusively breastfed, so no milk based forumula is involved. And we skipped zantac and prilosec adn went straight to prevacid solutabs. he is on 15ml in the am and 15ml in the pm. it seems like a lot for a little guy. We are only seeing my ped for DS#2 right now. He rx prevacid and reglan. I haven’t done the reglan b/c I’m afraid of it. However, i’m fairly certain gut-wise that he needs something more. the left a message for the ped and they said they’d run it by the doc and maybe he’ll switch meds for us. I have an appt for DS#2 at DS#1’s GI but they couldn’t get him in until a month from now. Kim
February 25, 2009 at 9:25 am #61263AnonymousInactiveHow long has he been on the Prevacid? He’s still very little, but sometimes it can take up to two weeks to see full results.
However, if things don’t start to improve soon, I would start to examine your diet. That fact that your first child has allergies, would suggest that this one may as well. You may want to start looking onto the TED diet or at the very least cutting out milk and soy from your diet. IT wasn’t until my son was on a good dose of a PPI AND I had been on TED for several weeks until he was truly comfortable.Even then, babies do have good and bad days. We like to call it the reflux rollercoaster because there are so many ups and downs. BUT, with meds. and food under control, you should be moving up more than you are down.February 25, 2009 at 9:35 am #61264AnonymousInactiveoh, haha…Sorry. I guess I should have realized that by looking at the DOB.
To quickly clarify…Is it 15ml or mg? This could make a difference b/c some swear that compounds don’t do as well as the actual solutab. How long has he been on it?I don’t blame you for staying away from the reglan. For my DD we used erythromycin(for DGE). Maybe this is an option for you? The only thing is that they’ve discont. one of their “types.” The one that we’re able to cont to get is EryPED 400mg per 5mL. It comes banana flavored and lasts for up to 35 days(unrefrigerated). Just make sure to discuss the change w/your Ped in order to gaurantee your pharmacy will be able to get it.Your DD#1 has allergies? Food allergies? If so, have you considered doing the TED to see if it helps w/DS2?Also, your DS1 has crohns…could your DD2 possibly have it? I’m not familiar w/the disease. I know some basic info, but know any about whether it’s hereditary, etc.Oh, before I forget…PROBIOTICS! These have really helped for both my LOs. Maybe introduce these to help combat any gut(yeast overgrowth)issues?!Good Luck!ETA: lol, I was typing this as Naomi posted hers. So, sorry if I repeated anything she said. 🙂valentine4mommy2009-02-25 09:36:33
February 25, 2009 at 1:07 pm #61273AnonymousInactiveWe have been on Prevacid for 2 weeks, though the learning curve of getting all the beads into his mouth via syringe took me a few days. So, maybe 1.5wks of getting all the active med.
The prev is 15mg solutab. I asked my ped (via the nurse taking a message) about emycin but he just said “I’d like you to try the reglan. We have lots of children on reglan.” Ugh. So, I called the GI and left a begging message to come in sooner. We do probiotics with DS#1 w/ good results. ANyone know how much I can give a 1month old? I DO think he needs a motility agent but i was hoping the CHOP GI would be open to something other than reglan. Does anyone know how young you can give emycin? You may not be able to give it to such a young one (1month).
Crohn’s disease is genetic, but of course we don’t have anyone else in our family with it. Grr. Lucky DS. I think there’s a strong possiblity of other GI issues with DS#2 b/c of the genetics. Crohn’s is inflammation of the colon. We had lots of cycling b/c constipation and diarrhea before they did a lower GI and found the inflammation in the colon.
And yes, I am SO afraid of it being allergies. THAT was why I was breastfeeding..hopefully to avoid it. The idea of the TED makes me want to curl in the fetal position!!!
February 25, 2009 at 9:33 pm #61278hellbenntKeymasterfor the solutabs: it’s 15mg solutab one time a day?
7.5mg two times a day? or 15mg two times a day?
are you giving the solutab on an empty stomach, followed by a feeding 30 minutes later?what are baby’s poops like? regualr mustardy/seedy breastfed baby poops? or frequent green (a green poop here & there is ‘normal) poops?watery & green? foamy, like shaving cream? stringy/mucousy or curdled/mucousy? foul smelling?foul smelling gas?any excema?these questions can help us determine if it may be related to a protein in your dietas for probiotics:February 25, 2009 at 9:46 pm #61281AnonymousInactiveSince you are giving the prevacid 1x/day, I personally would split the 15 mg into 7.5mg 2x/day as the he is probably going through the dose so fast that breaking it up may help esp at night. Since E-mycin is technically an antibiotic it is safe to give to 1 month olds… but I would def do a probiotic with it even more so than with reglan as since it is an antibiotic it will stress the gut even more. And def make sure you do the empty stomach thing or it won’t work and since you are bf then that is even more tricky but so worth it in the long run.
February 26, 2009 at 2:14 pm #61299AnonymousInactiveThanks so much for the help ladies! This has been the most info I’ve been able to get! You guys are great. Here are some answers to the questions:
My little on (the one i’m talking about) is 4weeks old and on 15mg of prevacid TWO times a day. So, currently he’s getting 15mg 2x/day (15mg in the morn and 15mg in the eve). I’m actually starting to figure out by taking notes that I think he needs it three times a day. the middle of the day sucks.
We are giving it on an empty stomach 30mintue before eating, which sucks while bf-ing b/c the timing is so hard. BUT, we’re able to do it at this point.
Poops= mainly seedy yellow but a few green ones, sometimes the green stuff and/or the yellow stuff can soak into teh diaper (i consider that baby diarrhea when it soaks into teh diaper rather than sitting on top of it…a nurse told me this once!)
He has TERRIBLE gas, more gas than a grown man and he struggles to produce it. Usually when he’s freaking out, eventually within minutes you’ll see a spit up, passage of gas, and/or belch. He has TONS of burps and gas. Foul smelling gas and sometimes wicked breath. No excema but we have it in our family (3yr old son has it).
To update on the meds, the ped said “take the reglan.” He wouldn’t consider an antibiotic like emycin. That upset me. I do think he needs a motlity agent. After his feed right now, he barely took anyting b/c he was busy arching and coming unlatched. We finally gave up to settle him. Then three seperate times he spit up a tablespoon plus while screaming (it hurt). This is why I think the prevacid isn’t working in the middle of the day. My ped GI appt was moved up (after I called begging) for two weeks. I’m not going to push the motility agent until I see the ped GI. I can’t seem to budge my ped into emycin.
Thanks for the probiotics link. DS#1 (3yro ld) takes VSL#3 probiotic. I am going to read that link and choose one for this litlte guy. Kim
February 26, 2009 at 6:59 pm #61306AnonymousInactiveok soooo… stinky gas and sinking poo indicates an issue to me… i would def cut dairy/soy out of diet.
February 26, 2009 at 8:52 pm #61309hellbenntKeymasteryep- try cutting all milk rotein/dairy and soy, including ‘hidden’ ingredients for a good 2 or even 3 weeks…or just go whole hog & do the TED…I did it…not so bad…helped answer a lot of questions…hang in there!
