Hi everyone, my DD is 3 weeks old and has severe acid reflux apparently as well as milk/soy protein allergy. To make a long story short.. this is where we are at now. Starting on monday night she was throwing up everything that went down, not spitting up, throwing up, all of it.. she was seriously not keeping anything down and we’ve been at Drs ever since it seems trying to get this figured out to no avail.. She had an u/s and upper GI done on tuesday, she has reflux. She was also given the stool test to find out if there was blood in her stool (apparently this is done to find out if she has a milk protien allergy) she came back positive. She has been on nutramigen for about 2 weeks, after switching formulas a couple times before that and our gastroenterologist switched us to Noecate just today. We tried prevacid but it wasn’t performing any miracles so we switched to axid just today so we shall see. So far no change but it may take a couple days I’m sure. Anyways so she has only been able to keep a little down here and there since monday night, she’s actually down 2oz from her birth weight and she turned 3 weeks old on monday. I’m lost on what to do.. I know really nothing about all of this, its all very new to me since my older dd (18 months) only had mild spit up problems which was solved with gentleease formula so I’ve never had to deal with all of this.. any and all suggestions/info would be greatly appeciated.. also if anyones kiddo has something similar please tell me what you are doing/taking if it seems to be helping.. Thanks in advance!!!

I’d go back to prevacid:your dose was most likely way too low, if it was liquid it most likely was not a stable one, meaning it was ineffective and, if it was solutabs, you most likely were not told to give on an empty stomach followed by a meal 30 minutes lateralso it can take 2 full weeks to see the effect once starting a PPI, so in the meantime you can give axid spaced 4hrs from ithttp://www.marci-kids.com is THE place to start re: PPI (prevacid, prilosec, nexium, protonix) dosingI have a LOT MORE to say & (most of) it’s here:

February 21, 2009 at 10:09 pm #61184AnonymousInactiveIt’s always best to listen to the lady that writes in the purple!!! So I’ll just say “yeah…what she said” and also add that you should see improvements on the Neocate too, once it heals the GI. My son was most comfy on Neocate and a good “strong” dose of Prevacid. π Good luck! jilly782009-02-21 22:10:28
February 21, 2009 at 10:21 pm #61185AnonymousInactiveThanks ladies for the info and links!!!
Any idea what dose my DD should be on of prevacid, she’s almost 4 weeks old and almost 10lbs..? The marci site says 6-8mg 3 times a day but the solutabs I have are 15mg and she was taking one a day.. Also from the marci-kids site I’m taking it that I can give her axid and prevacid together right, just separate them out, I may have to try that and see if it works better for her, has anyone done both together? Has anyone tried zegerid? And what about reglan, anyone have any luck with it.. ?There is entirely too much info to take in Ahh Brain overload!mommyof2girls2009-02-22 02:09:55
February 22, 2009 at 8:30 am #61186AnonymousInactiveIf their dosing chart says 6-8mgs 3x per day, than it sounds like another 1/2 of a solutab (7.5mgs) would be ok. That would be a total of 22.5mgs per day and the max dose. You’ll have to call and try to convince the ped. that is what you need which is not always easy. Some of us had to fight for a higher dose.
Lots of moms used Zegerid and it did wonders for their babies. It does not have to be timed around meals like Prevacid so there is that option if your pedi Gi will Rx it and your ins. will cover it.You can also give an H2 blocker like Axid, Zantac, etc., just make sure it is spaced 4 hrs apart from the PPI drug (prevacid) π It can be tricky doing a meds schedule, but once you get the hang of it…its worth it when they are comfy! If you have any other ?’s just ask away!jilly782009-02-22 08:31:35
February 22, 2009 at 3:38 pm #61190AnonymousInactiveRight now she’s an axid and every time we give it to her she throws up within 5-30 mins or so after taking it so we actually stopped it just today, we have an appt with the pedi GI Dr tomorrow and I called him a little bit ago about the axid (which is why I stopped giving it to her, thats what he suggested just till tomorrow) and I mentioned the zegerid to him and he talked about the mixing of it etc and seemed like he was open to trying it with her so I’m hoping that we will get some tomorrow.. I think the fact that I wont have to time it around meals will work much better since I can’t exactly tell a 4 week old baby that she has to wait however long for her bottle. I’ll also mention doing the zantac with it possibly. I’m hoping we can find the rght comb that makes her feel more comfortable, I feel so helpless sometimes, I wish I could just take it all away!! π
February 22, 2009 at 4:18 pm #61191AnonymousInactiveHey there… you may want to print out the info from marci kids and take it with you. No med (if not given properly and at a high enough dose) will give her sufficient relief.
Hopefully, you are on your way to meeting your happy baby.February 22, 2009 at 4:33 pm #61192AnonymousInactiveThanks Naomi, I had thought about doing that.. I like being *prepared* and I’m thinking I may have to justify things so it would be nice to have the info with me so I will probably do that.
The axid she was on was .7 ML 3x a day. Also more questions, what is buffer babies? Also I was thinking of getting her some mylanta cherry (the OTC one you’re supposed to add to the zegerid) and give it to her today to see if it will help her get through till we can get her new meds.. is this a good idea or no? Also I know I have seen zantac etc OTC is it the same as the script I would get for it or different? If its the same any idea how much I would give her (she’s 4 weeks tomorrow)? Thanks everyone sooo much!!February 22, 2009 at 6:22 pm #61195hellbenntKeymasterbufferbabies is the new & ‘improved’ (it’s a work in progress) of caracream:
Caracream: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11191&PID=94236#94236
mylanta cherry supreme: ALWAYS a good idea. give in 1ml doses, up to 5ml over a 24hr period- if you see loose stools, back off, LOL! VERY SAFE. You can give mylanta cherry supreme with zantac/axid/tagament/pepcid but you need to space it 4hrs seperate from the prevacid/prilosec
as far as zantac & pepcid OTC they are the same but they are in pill form. you can get pepcid chewables and dissolve them and give to your baby- look at the mgs and calculate accordingly
Zantac dosing- my/otherβs question (has axid & pepcid dose, too): https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=9539&PID=82914#82914
February 22, 2009 at 8:11 pm #61198AnonymousInactiveSorry to hijack OP. How long is it safe to use Mylanta Cherry Supreme? I asked our ped about this and she said not to use it. My DD is 17 months old. Ooops I realized we got the wrong one, this one we got is Mylanta Cherry but it has aluminum in it…darn.
February 23, 2009 at 1:02 am #61204AnonymousInactiveNo problem Precious, I was wondering the same thing also what is the deal with aluminum?
I am actually having a hard time finding Mylanta Cherry Supreme any ideas where I can find it? Can I not give her the classic or other Mylantas?February 23, 2009 at 10:08 pm #61225hellbenntKeymasteraluminum is a metal, and, well, doesn’t even sound like something you’d want in your body, lol…but a little here and there is most likely totally safe…not sure where to find it- you might have to hunt from target to walmart to different pharmacies- maybe call their 1 800 # and ask?
February 23, 2009 at 11:45 pm #61227AnonymousInactiveI finally found it after hunting all over town at Albertsons of all places!! YAY And the GI Dr did give me the zegerid so YAY, hopefully it works for her!
I’ll keep you all posted π Thanks again everyone!Keep your fingers crossed! -
