Hi,
I am new to this website and an blown away by all the helpful advice and the huge group of people who actually share my experience. I am sick to death and really angry with all the people who told me, “all babies spit up”.
So, here are my issues. I would appreciate any and all advice that you can spare a moment to send.
1) GUILT. I think my poor little guy, now 6.5 months old and very big, was undermedicated for the last 5 months. I feel so awful about not being able to help him properly. He has had to fight and fight to eat properly, to sleep properly and to just try to enjoy his little life, which has only been characterized by discomfort. I pretty much carried him for 12-14 hours a day for 4.5 straight months, because I didn’t know what else to do. The absolute worst days of my life were watching him go through round and round of eating, throwing up, soothing his tummy by eating tiny dribbles of milk for an hour, trying desperately to fall asleep but unable to when he started throwing up again. THis would go on for seven straight hours. How do I start to feel good not guilty about caring for him?
2) MEDS. He has been on Zantac which has mostly worked. He is also on domperidone to help increase motility as he is extremely slow to digest his food. He has thrown up food 4.5 hours after eating it. THe great difficulty has been making sure he does not throw the meds up. I cannot understand why all the meds for babies who vomit excessively are given orally. Does anyone know of another method? Are there suppositories? Are there ones that can be absorbed through the skin? At this age, what is the best medicine for acid suppression? Is there an ant-acid I should ask the pediatrician about? He seems to worst first thing in the morning after breastfeeding when he still arches away from me, crying and writhing.
3) FOOD. He has started solids which has caused more vomiting because the muscles he uses to have a bowel movement is pushing food out of his stomach instead. I have made his food as watery as possible. He has terrible gas from rice, apples, pears and peaches. Any suggestions as to good foods for a gassy, air swallowing gerdling?
4) SLEEP. My little guy has pretty much been sleep deprived for the last 5 months. He has gotten 9-11 hours in each 24 hour period. I would appreciate any advice on increasing sleep time, and ways to increase his napping, which is his big problem.
5) LOST FRIENDS AND FAMILY. Anyone know how to reconnect with people who used to be in your life, but because you have spent the last six months completely house bound are no longer there? I didn’t have time most days to eat or go to the bathroom because my little guy needed constant attention, nevermind phone anyone.
6) DOCTORS. Be careful! We have had both good and bad. In general, they are good for the medications, but know absolutely nothing about day to day care of a gerdling. The worst was a pediatric gastroenterologist who told us he does not believe in acid suppression because we don’t know if babies are in pain, and that my baby was just colicky. At least the regular pediatrician is great at recognizing babies expressions and noticed our guy grimacing when he vomited. Big surprise – that’s a sign of pain!
Thank you to all who have posted and shared their experiences. I don’t feel so completely isolated anymore.

February 16, 2009 at 4:55 pm #61070AnonymousInactivepersonally, i think that zantac is worthless, didn’t work for me or for one of my twins or for my youngest. i would think your little guy needs a PPI and a different ped gi.
i would worry about getting him on the right meds and the right dosage—-and i’ll bet you will see some changes.that doc says they don’t know if babies are in pain???????what planet do you suppose he came from????February 16, 2009 at 6:01 pm #61072hellbenntKeymasterow wow.
ok not sure I have time (that sounds so harsh!) to address everything, but this is some of what I have to say:GUILT and LOST FRIENDS:easy for me to say, but take this one day at a time. try hard to talk to yourself (and God) and to tell yourself that you’ve done the best you could with what you had- you have had a RIDICULOUS medical professional tell you that we don’t even know if babies are in pain (what the (*&*&%*%*??!!) and you’ve been SLEEP DEPRIVED as well as ISOLATED. You’re doing your best. that’s all anyone can ask/expect.so, from here on out: GO FORWARD! look, you’ve found THIS place!so RESEARCH all you can and FIGHT for that baby!!!find the PROPER dose of PPI and DEMAND THIS!!!ask your ped about carafateDEMAND A SCOPE (endoscopy) – after all of this time, your baby DESERVES to have this done, so the drs can take a peek in there (esophogus) to see if there’s any damagenext, with all the time you have (HA!) please read this:Groupie Intro: my intro: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853&PN=1&TPN=1
Please PLEASE take the time to read/scroll/skim through the info from this link, as it truly will help you!
so glad you found us!

ps: about food: has cereal helped? maybe thick rather than thinner? oatmeal or barley?
February 16, 2009 at 7:44 pm #61076AnonymousInactiveI would demand for Prevacid or Prilosec or another PPI! Prevacid is what we are using now, she’s been on it since Jan 2008. I agree with everything you said! It’s so lonely sometimes, esp when everyone around you tells you it’s normal and make you feel like making things up and stuff.
My DD was BF and I pumped but I had to supplement with Similac Alimentum RTF. My supply was very low and she was not gaining weight with the breastmilk. At 4 months she went to Alimentum full-time. BTW we also tried Zantac and it really didn’t work. Well maybe it’s bec she won’t take it. Axid worked ok and it was easier to give to her bec it tastes better. But later on after she was rushed in the ER twice she was switched to Prevacid and now I’m trying to wean her off it now.Precious2009-02-16 19:45:01
February 16, 2009 at 9:36 pm #61080AnonymousInactiveI would say get a new peds GI and get your DS on a PPI. We are on prevacid solutabs 7.5mgs 3 times a day and similac Isomil thickened w/ simply thick. This whole thing has taken a toll on my marriage but thanfully I have a wonderful DH and no matter how stressed I get he tries to keepme grounded. Have you tried avacados? My first DS ate alot of avacados, they are high in cals and good fat, he had severe Gerd and was underweight until we started solids. c5afwife2009-02-16 21:37:11
February 18, 2009 at 7:29 pm #61133AnonymousInactiveThanks for all the advice.
The marci-kids website is very informative. Different advice than what I heard from ped ge specialist. He seemed to say that Zantac is the first choice until the maximum dose does not work, then switch to Prevaci, then use anatacids, like Mylanta as the very last resort.
My gerdling has not been on the maximum Zantac dose yet. We did get some Prevacid samples, but the solutabs seem to be a difficult to get a baby to take. You have to break up the tablet without breaking the coating?!? I am also concerned with the fact it seems to wear off for many of you.
The doctor increased his Zantac (still not the maximum possible) and now he is hardly eating. Is this normal?
Thanks,
Joan
Thanks, Pauline
February 18, 2009 at 7:41 pm #61135hellbenntKeymasterI would try mixing mylanta cherry supreme (just try .5ml to start) with the zantac to help it go down better- look at the ingredients to see that it doesn’t have aluminum- it’s the adult kind of mylanta- you cannot overdose- if you see loose stools then ‘just’ back off- you can give 1ml here & there up until 5mls a day (or loose stools)
I would also try the max amount of zantac-give 2x a day- cannot hurt-and in the meantime work on getting the prevacid into baby’s sytem- can take up to 2 weeks to show it’s full effects- so give both, just give 4hrs apart…as for solutabs, get pill cutter & put unused portion in foil in the fridge-when giving solutab either just hold along inside of cheek to have it dissolve & follow by 1ml chaser(s) of water -
