Good Morning,
We are brand new to the forums, brand new to “this reflux thing”, and THANK GOD I found y’all last week, we went to our pediatrician yesterday and got a scrip for Axid, and will move on to Prilosec if he is not showing significant improvement within 10 days. HOWEVER, I searched in vain on this site for answers to some very pressing questions, and thought perhaps somebody could help…
1. On the prescription bottle, in all caps, it says “DO NOT TAKE ANY ANTACIDS WHILE ON THIS MEDICATION”. Yet inside it says it is fine to take antacids WITH this Axid, at the same time! It would seem contrary to what I have read on this site as well. Any insights?
2. Our son is 6 weeks and 10 lbs, 13 oz. His dose is 2ml/2x day. That works out to more than the “max” dosage I have seen on this site (concentration is 15 mg/ml) Is this a concern?
3. What are the most common side effects seen in infants on this medication? I can find all sorts of lists of adult side effcts, but none for babies.
Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide! Hope to become more involved with the forums after I am not soothing a screaming baby 24/7 🙂
February 11, 2009 at 10:36 am #60944AnonymousInactive1) you can give Mylanta with (ie: @ the same time) or anytime through out the day while on Axid or Zantac
2) Yeah, I just did the math & you are on a higher than max dose for his weight. (just quickly doing the math it seems that 10mg/kg per day would be around 44mg & he’s on 60). I don’t really know what to say to that (my ds is 17lbs & prescribed 1.5mL 2x/day but I give 2-2.5 mL 2x/day)… maybe just give 1.5 mL 2x/day – that would be 45mg/day – around the “max”. Hopefully someone else will chime in about this.
3) I can’t speak for everyone but I haven’t seen any side-effects on Axid. I think some others have seen some w/ Zantac (we didn’t) but not so much Axid.
Hang in there.
February 11, 2009 at 3:16 pm #60950AnonymousInactiveHey I did the math too but got a slightly different number than Erin. I got him to be about 4.9kg which I would round up to 5kg so his max dose would be 50ml which is just slightly lower that what you were prescribed. Is your baby gaining weight quickily? Your ped may realize that Axid and Zantac are both very weight sensitive and that is why they gave you a “higher” than normal dose. I might do 1.5ml in the morning and 2ml at night and that has you right at 52.5mg/day. Zantac and Axid are very safe, I really don’t know of any side effects. HTH.

February 11, 2009 at 9:32 pm #60963AnonymousInactiveTHANK YOU ALL for your quick responses. I am very relieved! I plan to do my research, plus all of the people at my office are researching too! LOL 🙂 It takes a village….
One more quick question. We gave our son his second dose at 6pm, but we have seen NO changes in symptoms. HOW LONG does it take for Axid (or similar) to kick in? I am getting a bit paranoid that this med is not going to work for him….
February 12, 2009 at 9:25 pm #60980AnonymousInactiveMy DD was on Axid before she went on Prevacid and I didn’t notice any side effects. It also didn’t work well though, her reflux was very bad that time. She was also on 2ml twice a day. She was 2 months old and weighed 13 something lbs.
