Hi… I’m new on the boards. My son is 3 months old and has been struggling with reflux since he was 2 weeks old. He is still breastfed (a miracle in itself) and gaining weight ok but we are having a really hard time getting his reflux under control. First there was zantac, then compounded prilosec. When we ran into problems with the prilosec going bad, we switched to prevacid and I got buffer babies. Our dr. is great and he is on the marci kids recommended dose of 30mg/day but it doesn’t seem to be doing much. He’s been on it for 10 days now, and we noticed it kick in on day 5 since he stopped eating altogether when we switched him from the prilosec. Now he eats…sometimes… but is constantly kicking and pulling, and he will only eat a couple of ounces. He doesn’t spit up a lot but I can hear it coming up and he swallows it back. I’m sure he would spit up a lot more if he actually ate a full meal. Now he also seems to be a lot fussier than usual since starting the prevacid. He can be playing and in a great mood and then suddenly erupt in wails. He also can’t sleep for long. He used to sleep ok…just waking up to eat, but now he tosses and turns all night. I’m wondering if he is experiencing some bad side effects of the prevacid or maybe even a reaction to the buffer babies. Has anyone else had trouble with either, and if so what did you notice? some of these symptoms could indicate an ear infection but we’ve never had one so aren’t sure. He’s definitely having a slowdown in the poop department since starting prevacid. He used to be a 3-4 times a day kid, and then suddenly every other day. If anyone has advice, please share! We haven’t had any testing done to determine if anything else could be bothering him, but I will probably take him back to the dr. this week if he doesn’t show more improvement.

well it’s ‘only’ been 10 days, maybe give it 4 more and see what is going on?
is baby on formula? if so, which one?or breastfeeding?if breastfeeding: what are poops like? refular mustardy-seedy breastfed baby stools or are they mostly green? green all the time? bse a few green diapers here & thre is normal…are they mucousy (stringy? looks like snot?)? foul smelling?does baby grunt and strain as if having a hard time passing a poop?have foul smelling gas?February 7, 2009 at 6:07 pm #60868AnonymousInactiveHe’s breastfed, and the poops are normal…just fewer and less frequent. A little thicker as a result of that, but not dry like if he was constipated.

February 8, 2009 at 3:29 pm #60885AnonymousInactivemy daughter turns and tosses all night as well…and i too thought it got worse when we started the prevacid… hmmm. ..but i have never found any info to back that up!? …
February 8, 2009 at 7:32 pm #60887hellbenntKeymastermaybe at night there’s break-through acid? if baby wakes up, top off w/ some zantac/axid/pepcid/tagament? or even just some mylanta?
February 8, 2009 at 8:02 pm #60892AnonymousInactiveEvan is on Prevacid 30mg/day. He tolerates the solutabs great & does fine for the 24 hrs (no break-through).
When he’s on buffer babies he has break-through pain after 5-7 hrs – it just doesn’t cover him as long. I documented very closely & that’s the bottom line. It’s very disappointing b/c I wanted SO much for it work (b/c of the timing) but the timing of the solutabs is so not a big deal in the big picture (ie: making him feel better).
HTH some
February 9, 2009 at 11:57 am #60902AnonymousInactivehow do you know if there is breakthrough acid? Olsen has been sleeping horribly lately. He wakes up every hour and it takes a lot of rocking to get him to sleep. I tried asking his GI doctor about a higher dose (he’s on 15 mg of prevacid solutabs split in two doses a day) but since his scope showed that his esophagus looks good, the GI said that means his current dose is working.
February 9, 2009 at 4:44 pm #60906AnonymousInactiveI give him 10 mg 3x a day and his crying seems unrelated to reflux since he usually only fusses at mealtimes. I do notice it seems to wear off by morning after his bedtime dose though. Has anyone else had better luck with solutabs vs. bufferbabies? Also, did you see continual improvement or did it start working and that is as good as it gets?

I think you can only know based on pain and irritability. I would continue to watch the breakthrough – just because he has one clear scope doesn’t mean that he isn’t still in pain and that over time, he could develop esophagitis. My son seemed ok for a long time on prevacid and then eventually got worse and a scope showed he developed esophagitis. I think you have to make sure they are comfortable too, it can take a while for esophagus problems to develop. My son is a silent refluxer but I could still hear it coming up on him but we were on a dose that was “supposed” to be working so the doctors all said there wasn’t an acid in what was coming up and told me to wait it out. Eventually he developed worse eating problems and esophagitis and now we are headed to Boston Hospital for some answers. Just wanted to give you my own experience so you can keep an eye out for increased pain or continued discomfort and then you can push for a higher dose. Good luck!February 10, 2009 at 7:55 pm #60931AnonymousInactiveThe Prevacid for us kicked in at 11 days. There was a big improvement, but it has never fixed the problem completely. But it made it manageable. I knew he was still in some pain but all the doctors (his ped, ENT and GI) said he would outgrow it by 1 year and to wait it out. He started the Prevacid when he was 2 months (15 mg solutabls 2 times/day). He is 17 months now, never outgrew the reflux and since the Prevacid never fixed it, he now has esophagitis and eating problems. I wish I had a solution for you, but I am still looking for one! I know definitely not to wait it out – it could be too late by then. Just keep trying different things and documenting how your child reacts and do your best. It is very frustrating – good luck!

Sorry If I’m misunderstanding you, but since you said that he fusses mainly during mealtimes…to me…that would definitely be reflux related. Maybe he is reacting to the bufferbabies?! We use solutabs here and have great success w/them. It’s really interesting b/c you also said his bm’s are normal too, which would rule out any type of intolerance. Hmmm…Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.February 11, 2009 at 10:19 am #60940AnonymousInactiveI agree w/ Amber re: fussy during feeding=reflux related.
February 11, 2009 at 2:01 pm #60948AnonymousInactiveSorry, I didn’t communicate that clearly. Normally he fusses at mealtimes…yes reflux related. Since the prevacid started, he has been crying more the rest of the day, not at mealtimes. So we are experimenting with the timing of the doses to see if the prevacid is causing him some pain/side effects.
