Hi. I need some advice. My son is a silent refluxer diagnosed at 6wks. He is now 12wks and is 14lbs. We started prevacid @ 7 weeks after begging the ped (why are they so difficult)?
Here is his history:
-improved for a week on prevacid (15mg 1xday)
-went ahead and eliminated main dairy
-Started screaming again, ped wouldn’t help
-After three weeks off dairy seemed to be improving, but developed been mucous stools, diaper rash, and a touch of eczema
-Started screaming again
-I eliminated all dairy, soy, gluten, wheat, eggs, nuts, etc. Not fully ted but close.
-Stools improved within four days, but reflux symptoms worsening?
-We increased prevacid to 7.5mg 3xday without ped permission bc of marci kids recommendation
-That was two days ago, I’m still on elimation, and he has been progressively getting worse, screaming hysterically all day today ( he finally passed out)
What the heck? If his stools are good now why is he getting worse? How long does it take to see results from a med increase? Am I doing something wrong? Please help.

February 7, 2009 at 8:10 pm #60872AnonymousInactivemy dd takes zegerid, which is immediate release, and it took us about a week to really see results.. during that week, she was still having breakthrough acid a couple of times a day. i’m not sure how prevacid works, but since it is delayed release, it might take some time to take effect in his system, and it sounds like he’s only been getting the correct dose for a couple of days now…
maybe some others who have more experience with prevacid will chime in. hang in there, i know it’s rough!

1) he’s reacting to something in the solutabs (I’m assuming that’s what he’s on?)… either the lactose or the aspartame (sweetener).
2) since you’ve eliminated many things from your diet are you now eating larger amounts of something else? (ie: turkey, rice, etc)? This was the case w/ us… I was eating loads of turkey, pears & rice & my son’s stools got SO much worse than pre-TED – b/c it turned out he’s intolerant to those 3 things.
Hang in there- you’re doing great.

February 8, 2009 at 9:33 pm #60896AnonymousInactiveErin- thanks for the advice. I don’t mean to be funny, but how did you discover the intolerances? Since his stools are ok now how will i tell? And what did you eat if you can’t eat the ted foods? Did you start adding things back in? Is your son MPSI? Sorry for all the q’s, but I don’t want to backtrack. I’m barely eating, barely sleeping, and getting desperate. Mom2natertot2009-02-08 21:34:54
February 8, 2009 at 9:51 pm #60897AnonymousInactiveWell, for us the indication(s) for his intolerances were directly related to his stools. So I’m not sure if yours is an intolerance issue.
For a few weeks all I ate was: pears (I hadn’t realized they were causing issues yet), potatoes & squash. Eventually I added in beef & for like 5mths only ate potatoes, apples, beef & squash. That’s still my baseline & what I return to if we have a bad day/week. I’ve gotten used to it :).
My son is MFPI (multiple food protein intolerance) including MSPI.
No problem w/ all the questions.
Are you giving the Prevacid on an empty stomach then feeding 30min later? I might try doing 7.5mg in the a.m then 15mg in the p.m. (before bed) to see if that helps some.
If you DO suspect it’s the solutabs I would switch to capsules & sprinkle them on 1/2 tsp of pureed pears or apples & give that way. (we did this as early as 5 wks old).
Hang in there
