Well Grant had his upper Gi this morning and the peds radiologist said his antomy was fine- Yeah for that! BUT than I asked about reflux and he said well his esphogus(sp) wasn’t big so it didn’t look inflamed which is not typicaof reflux. Yeah OK than why won’t he eat?!?!? SO anyway I’m glad his antomy is fine but he was basicly like your kid doesn’t have reflux. We have an appiontment on Feb 20th with the head peds GI doc at Brenners Children Hospital here in NC so hopefully he will help us. Grant is eating better but still not like he was. Wish us luck 🙂
January 29, 2009 at 12:04 pm #60676AnonymousInactiveupper GI CAN NOT always see reflux and is not the appropriate tool to diagnose reflux. It is great for confirming anatomy is good, and sometimes children reflux during the test, but just because your child did not have a specific reflux episode while drinking barium while strapped to a board, DOES NOT mean your child doesn’t have reflux. That radiologist is just that, a radiologist, not a doctor.
Hang in there and just report everything you need to the GI when you go.January 29, 2009 at 2:25 pm #60680AnonymousInactiveI agree with what Ann Marie said. the Upper GI doesn’t always show reflux. In our case it did, but that isn’t usually what happens. The big thing is that you have ruled out pyloric stenosis so there is obviously something else going on.
January 29, 2009 at 2:38 pm #60682AnonymousInactivethat is a new one!!! i’ve never heard of a radiaologist being able to tell whether or not an esophagus is inflamed!!! they are just looking at a black outline. even a scope, where the doc looks directly at the esophagus with a camera, doesn’t necessarily show inflamation. the doc said sylvia’s scope looked pretty good—-but when they looked at it microscopically, her esophagus was getting ulcerated.
January 29, 2009 at 6:22 pm #60693AnonymousInactiveHey there! I don’t know alot about this, but I live just outside of Winston-Salem, NC, and we never went to Brenner’s because I haven’t heard much good about the GI’s there. I hope that you will find the help that you need, but I just wanted to give you a heads up.
January 29, 2009 at 7:19 pm #60694AnonymousInactiveReally? We went there with my now 3 year old and I was pretty impressed by the doc’s and the care my son received. If I don’t like them than we will go to UNC Chapel Hill- it’s closer anyway. Can you tell me what you heard? We are 2.5 hours away so I haven’t heard anything.
January 30, 2009 at 5:27 pm #60706AnonymousInactiveHi,
We just went through the same thing. . .My DS had an upper GI done last week and they didn’t see anything, not even any reflux. I was shocked because I already went through this with my now, almost 4 year old son. My ds has classic reflux signs. My pedi wasn’t comfortable with all the projectile vomiting that has been happening and the fact that they saw NO reflux on the upper GI so he referred us to a pedi GI doctor. Well we saw the pedi GI this week and she made it very CLEAR that an Upper GI is NOT a test to diagnose reflux, but they use it just to rule out anything else that could be wrong anatomy wise. . .She did in fact diagnose him with reflux at his appt Tuesday, and she started us on Prevacid. So hopefully the pedi GI you see will help. . . Good Luck!January 31, 2009 at 10:36 am #60711AnonymousInactiveWell, a local mom in town here went and was pretty much brushed off by the doctor. I do think, however, that he prescribed Zegerid for her son, so he at least knew about it.
The other experience was a mom here on the boards who was brushed off by the GI. Just pretty much told that all babies spit up, he’ll grow out of it, etc. But, if you had great care with your other child, that’s great to hear. I”m sure you will have a great experience this time around too.January 31, 2009 at 2:53 pm #60713AnonymousInactiveThanks, Like I said we had a good experience the dr did a follow up swallow study and listened to what I had to say but Jack had almost out grown the reflux and he had already out grew the dysphagia. I hope since we are seeing the actual head of Peds GI that he will listen to what I have to say. I would like Grant on the Zegerid cuz it’s such a PIA to wait the 30 mins and Grant will not take the Zantac with out serious effort and even than it’s iffy.
January 31, 2009 at 3:21 pm #60714AnonymousInactiveWell, if he won’t go for the Zegerid, you can also use Buffer Babies with the Prevacid. You don’t have to time with that either.
January 31, 2009 at 6:15 pm #60715AnonymousInactiveCan it be used w/ the solutabs?
January 31, 2009 at 6:47 pm #60716AnonymousInactiveno, you would need to get the packets, I think.

We saw dr Ivor Hill at Brennar when our son was 4 months and we were seriously disappointed. He basically told us he would grow out of it but would rx prevacid if it would make US feel better. We drove 5 hours and waited 2 months for this appt and were so sick when we left. We later found out from a different GI in Charlotte the Carson had severe esophageal damage from the reflux and a milk allergy. I wouldn’t recommend dr Hill to anyone. Don’t mean to be a buzzkill but just wanted you to know our experience.February 1, 2009 at 9:51 pm #60728hellbenntKeymaster[kelly: have you posted this here
