I always try to give my 20 month old son his 30 mg of Prevacid at least 2 hours after his last snack and then have dinner 30 min-1 hour later. Many days this works, but sometimes the schedule gets off because of late missed naps, delays picking up brother at school etc.
In this situation it will be 5:00 (time for meds) and he will have just eaten a snack. If I go ahead and let him eat more and then give meds at 7:15 or so (2 hours after having eaten), then it’s hard to get him to “eat” at 7:45. I can get him to have a little bit of milk, but not much. Is it better to do this so his stomach is more empty or go ahead and give meds at 5:00 on a partially empty stomach and then feed him dinner at 5:30 like normal? Also, we went back to the doctor today and she suggested that for kids the Prevacid doesn’t last a full 12 hours (which explains our night wakeups) so moving his medicine a couple hours later might be a good thing. However, I’m just not sure how to get him to eat again right before bed unless it’s a real “treat” food. If I have to either give the Prevacid on a less empty stomach or risk not having a full meal because I’m giving the medds 2 hours after dinner as opposed to 30 minutes before dinner, which is preferable? Also, is ice cream bad for reflux or good, I’ve heard mixed things (and I could definitely get him to eat ice cream right before bed 🙂Thanks!January 29, 2009 at 8:08 am #60665hellbenntKeymasterice cream is only ‘bad’ if baby cannot tolerate dairy products- how does he do w/ dairy products? can’t answer the rest of the question, but you might want to switch to Bufferbabies so you dont have to worry about timing of the meds: (caracream=bufferbabies):https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11191&PID=94236#94236

Last night we did meds at 7:45 (instead of 5:00) and then yogurt and milk 30 minutes later and he slept until 5 am for about the 4th time in his life. We are thrilled, hoping giving meds 2 hours 45 minutes later is the reason.rebeccamay2009-01-29 11:38:54

January 30, 2009 at 1:59 am #60699AnonymousInactiveThe pediatric gastroentrologist squeezed us in and we had a great appt. She thinks William does have reflux and also suggested we see an ENT to look at the sleep snoring, heavy breathing, etc.
The best thing she mentioned was that although Prevacid is supposed to work for 12 hours that a lot of parents reported it seemed to work for a much shorter time, so last night we gave William his medicine 2 hours and 45 minutes later than normal and he slept really well (as I mentioned in post above). I just wanted to pass this tidbit on in case it helps anyone else…it may be worth jumping through scheduling hoops to get the medicine as late at night as possible. -
