Hello. I’m new here. I’m a SAHM to a 16 month old girl. She’s been on Prevacid for about 1 yr now. Our ped asked us to take her off Prevacid but I was hesitant so I didn’t. That was back when she was 12 months old. I want to start weaning her slowly. I know from my own experience how the acid rebound tends to happen if you quit cold turkey. I was on Nexium and then Prilosec for over 1 yr. Anyway, anyone been successful on weaning off Prevacid? How did you do it? She is taking 7.5 mg a day, splitting a 15 mg solutab. I’ve been thinking of ordering Buffer Babies and getting a script for the Prevacid capsules instead. How will this work as far as decreasing the dosage?
Sorry for all the questions! Thanks in advance.PreciousJanuary 25, 2009 at 9:53 pm #60554AnonymousInactiveIf she is only on 7.5mg/day then I would just stop there and within 2wks you will know for sure if she is okay. With my son who was on 30mg/day 15mg in a.m. and p.m. I started by cutting his morning dose in 1/2 for 3wks, then his p.m dose in 1/2 for 3 more weeks and then cut out the morning dose for 3wks and then when it was time to cut again (he was only on 7.5mg/day at that time) I cut it completely. HTH.

I had flashbacks of her refluxing back when she was an infant. 🙁 Our ped gave us Zantac so I thought of weaning her to that and then working from there on. I read somewhere online another mom doing this but the forum was old and closed and I couldn’t respond.
Did your LO have any issues with anemia or B12 defficiencies? How long was he on Prevacid. My DD is also allergic to eggs and to milk.January 25, 2009 at 10:11 pm #60556AnonymousInactiveYou could totally do the Zantac wean if that makes you feel more comfortable. Cooper did not have problems with anemia or b12, but he was MSPI (milk/soy protein intolerant) which is what caused his reflux. We didn’t find out about his egg allergy until he had been off prevacid for about 2 months. He was on prevacid from about 3 months until 16 months… we started our wean at 14 months, but took it very slowly.
January 25, 2009 at 10:32 pm #60558AnonymousInactiveThanks again. She was first diagnosed w/ MPSI at 3 months and then she had allergy testing at 12 months and that’s when we found out about the milk and egg allergy. She has another rouind of allergy testing in March and we’re praying she has gotten better especially with the egg. If I do Zantac I will have to stop it for 1 week prior to the testing.
January 26, 2009 at 2:50 pm #60567AnonymousInactiveWhy do you have to stop the Zantac prior to allergy testing? I have never heard of this.
January 26, 2009 at 4:02 pm #60576AnonymousInactiveZantac is an h2 antagonist and it’s considered antihistamine. It interferes with the results so that’s why I have to stop it 1 week prior to allergy testing so we can have accurate results.
