if you are unable to get a doctor to give a good dose of ppi, what can you do? is there something otc that can be given? we’re looking at a situation where we may have to try and think of another way to get her medicated…we cannot afford to see a doctor out of our insurance network, or we would do so..
anything? thanks 🙂 🙁

January 19, 2009 at 7:51 pm #60445hellbenntKeymasterI just looked at your signature, and baby isn’t even on a PPI yet- so I’d start thereyou can (I just read a post today- but check it out yourself) order Bufferbabies and use OTC prilosec with it!you can go to your dr & ask for rx of prevacid capsules (for yourself) and order bufferbabies (NOT TELLING YOU TO DO THIS)you can try to find a provider in-network who will work with you, maybe a family doctor…you mentioned before that this is most likely not an option…but hey why not try?you can also then research when the ped GI is on call at the children’s hospital and go to the ER when s/he is on call (unless it’s the same ped GI you’re seeing now)- or travel to the next town when ped Gi is on call- what if you were in the next town & dd had to go to ER? how does insurance work that way?you can contact dr philips yourself and see what he says- he will even actually correspond w/ your dr if need beothers have doene this: you can give double dose and see how baby does- then you can (I AM NOT TELLING YOU TO DO THIS) tell a white lie to dr how you and husband/mother/babysitter, etc were not communicating & each one was giving dose so it was double and LO! and behold baby is BETTER, whatdya know?!are you giving maximum zantac for weight?January 26, 2009 at 3:45 pm #60572AnonymousInactivehi laura.. dr. p emailed me and told me that i could use OTC prilosec with bufferbabies if my ped or the GI we’re seeing won’t up her zegerid any. so, that may be what we have to do. i’m wondering if the OTC prilosec is any different from a script for a PPI, like not as good.. i’m also freaked out to try and mix stuff up at home for her like a wannabe chemist, b/c i get really confused really easily when it comes to all this stuff. but we’ll see. right now the zegerid dose we’re giving her is not helping her at all.
also, i thought about trying to get zegerid for myself or dh from his doctor, but would it be the same powder packets? do they even give that to adults? so many questions.. lol
i think we were about at max zantac when taking it. we were giving 2.1ml BID, and her max was 4.7ml a day.. cutting it kinda close for comfort.
i was telling dr. p, we’re at a huge disadvantage here b/c we live on the island of oahu, and there’s only 1 pedGI, and he’s pro-mylanta for treatment of GERD, lol.. really sucks..
January 26, 2009 at 4:42 pm #60580AnonymousInactivejust check the dosage amount on the OTC prilosec, otherwise, it should be the same as a script.
January 27, 2009 at 11:16 am #60603AnonymousInactiveThe Bufferbabies instructions has options for generic Prilosec/Omeprazole… I think the tablets have to be crushed in a coffee grinder. But the instructions you get with the kit tell you, step by step.

MaggiFebruary 2, 2009 at 11:09 pm #60739AnonymousInactiveJust wanted to add that our ped had never even HEARD of putting babies on ppi drugs and I took him all the printed info from MARCI kids and he read it nad was willing to try the dose Dr. P recommended. Don’t know if that’s an option. I also faxed our specialist when my second child’s reflux was bad and he had already given us one dose. I faxed all this info from http://www.marci-kids.com and then asked specifically to add a third dose during the day and he agreed. But I always had the info printed right there. Is that a possibility that they would listen after seeing the info?
February 2, 2009 at 11:19 pm #60740AnonymousInactivethanks for the feedback. we did fax the info to her ped last week, but he was still sketchy about the dose, b/c the studies under the research link on marcikids site don’t pertain to dosing in babies under 1yr. also, the ped GI that was listed on the team there (dr. ramirez) is apparently gone, so there is nobody there who can speak to my ped.. (YES, i asked. i was desperate lol)
however!!! we saw the GI today, and i think he has approved the dose we’re giving her (marcikids dose). he — unlike her ped — seemed totally fine to hear that she was getting 10mg TID, and was knowledgeable about the fact that infants need high doses, and why. so thank GOD. now with his recommendation, our ped will feel comfortable in prescribing the higher dose. just in time, we were about to run out early. 🙂
