InactiveBrief History: I have 3 year old and a 1 1/2 year old. . .both boys were on compounded prilosec for reflux at very high doses and responded well to it.
Now I have a 1 month old baby girl who started to show signs of reflux a few weeks ago. I am bfing on a diet free of dairy,soy, nuts, and chocolate).She was prescribed zantac which not to my surprise didn’t work.Then she was on compounded prilosec which I requested, but she would vomit as soon as she started eating (after the 30 minute wait).So today the ped prescribed the prevacid solutabs which I have no experience with. The directions say to disolve one tablet in water daily. It is a 15mg tab. (for reference she is 11 pounds). So it isn’t at a high doseage, but it is a starting point.Should I give her the entire solutab once a day or should I split it in two? With my boys, they were always dosed 2 or 3 times a day, so now I’m confused.Thanks!December 23, 2008 at 1:24 pm #59836InactiveI would split. Just curious why you were waiting with the compound? for us, that is why we loved it with Carter as it could be given without regard to food. anyway, solutab is a favorite here, but yes, if it were me, I would split in two times a day for now and then ask for more if it is not enough….

This is what I loved about the compound also with my boys. But back then, I had very high confidence in the pharmacy I was using. They were compounding it to all the specifications I found (that is how they always compound it). The pharmacists were all very well versed in compounding prilosec.But since then we moved. . . .And this pharmacy wanted to add flavoring (although they didn’t at my request) and did not seem as confident in the compounding.So I was giving it on an empty stomach and making her wait the 30 minutes incase the buffer wasn’t enough.December 23, 2008 at 1:40 pm #59838InactiveI would also split up the dose. If you only have a 15mg pill then it’s probably best to only do it 2 times rather than 3. Just b/c it might not be effective enough at such a low dose 3x/day, KWIM?!…About your old compound and waiting 30min. My DDs Ped GI also told me that even w/a compound in order for it to be most effective you needed to wait the 30min, just like w/the solutabs.
Just a suggestion on how to administer the solutab…Hold the tab in her mouth(alternating cheeks each time) until it starts to dissolve, then follow w/about an oz or so of plain water(in a bottle/syringe). This is what has worked best for us. I’m sure others will have more suggestions. My DD is at the age now where she just sucks on the tab w/o me holding it and then I give her a suck of water and she’s good.HTH! December 23, 2008 at 3:01 pm #59841InactiveI would split that solutab in 1/2 and give 7.5mg in the a.m. and again in the p.m. Make sure you store the unused 1/2 of the tab in aluminum foil as it is light sensitive and don’t mix it with water until you are about to give it b/c it won’t be effective if it is in the water for more than I believe 15 min. Good Luck we LOVED the solutabs.
December 24, 2008 at 11:25 am #59855InactiveThanks for all the advice. I did try to split the dose, but when I cut the pill in half, it broke up quite a bit. . .not an even split. The same thing happened this morning, even though I was using an very sharp pairing knife. Now I’m worried it is more like “crushed” than cut.

KeymasterI’ve read about good success using a pill cutter…not sure about crushed vs cut…
December 24, 2008 at 11:56 am #59857InactiveWe use a pill cutter. You can find them at walmart for around $6. BUT I did want to mention that you really need to try and NOT crush them. It has something to do w/the entercoated granules or something of that nature. Hopefully someone else will explain the reasoning as to why(it has left my brain). 🙂 Good Luck!
