Im so sorry to be posting this here, as I know very well that it is very off topic. I seen the *just for fun* parts of the forum…but they looked like ghost towns lol.
Anyways I have a question about when I should Enroll my son for Kindergarten. I hear so many different things that I am officially confused. My son is 4 and will be 5 this FEB. On the school districts website it states that your child must be 5 years of age before December 1st……December what?…2008…2009?I thought that at on point they told me he couldn’t start school until he was 6 because his b-day was in FEB. BUT then I hear that he can go next school year (09-10) and to enroll him in this Sept. Im at a loss, any info on this would be very helpfulHe was born 02/19/04December 17, 2008 at 7:35 am #59637AnonymousInactiveIf he is 5 by december 31 of the school year, so if he will be 5 in Feb of 2009, then he should start school in Sept 2009….. HTH!

December 17, 2008 at 12:18 pm #59648AnonymousInactiveYep, I’d agree that he can start Sept. 09. I remember you saying that he is a pretty smart kid…if you wait until he’s 6, he might be bored.
When I browse the forum, I always click the “Active Topics” link at the top right hand side of the page. That way I can see ANY new posts on the forum regardless of what section they were posted in. Hopes that helps!December 17, 2008 at 12:25 pm #59649AnonymousInactiveChristine- Yup they go all day. Last year you had 3 choices, All day 5 days a week kindergarten, 5 half days a week kindergarten, or 3 full days a week kindergarten.
This year all 5 yr olds go to the 5 day a week all day kindergarten. 4 yr olds go to the 5 days a week half days kindergarten, so we don’t really have a choice.Michael is a brilliant young man, and I think he will do well in school. His preschool teacher wanted him to skip kindergarten and go straight to 1st grade, but I wont have any of that. Kindergarten may not be as *schooly* as 1st grade, but he can still learn a lot from kindergarten, that he will need to have for future success.December 17, 2008 at 2:09 pm #59663AnonymousInactiveI think that up north and in the west most of the kindergarten classes are 1/2 days, but down here in the south that is a odd thing. most of the kids go all day 5 days/wk. I know we have different rules and it is if they are 5 by Sept 30th of that school year. My friends little boy started this August and then he turned 5 the week after school started. Good Luck. I am sure he will do great.
December 17, 2008 at 6:42 pm #59675hellbenntKeymasterin miami we start Kinder when child is 5 by Sept. 1
so jonah w/ his july birthday is ‘young’ for his gradethey go 5 days a week from 8:30-2:00pmfirst grade goes the same hours and thensecond-fifth theygo 8:30-3:00pmDecember 17, 2008 at 7:13 pm #59677AnonymousInactiveWe are a 2 hour and 50 minute kindergarten 5 days a week. It is a VERY short day and they have the same standards to hit as the full day kindergarten in our area. So, we are looking into getting full day kindergarten. I hope it passes by the time Carter is in school!
December 17, 2008 at 8:14 pm #59679AnonymousInactivewe have morning kindergarten or afternoon kindergarten 8:30 to 11:30 or 12:00 to 3:00. there used to be an all day kindergarten for kids that needed extra help, but i am not sure if they still have that or not. i think at one time they might have tried the all-day-3-days-a-week thing, too.
my older kids learned the alphabet and sounds in kindergarten and read (metra) in first grade. in the 4 years between the twins and molly, things changed and molly learned her alphabet, sounds, and did the same reading(metra) as the older kids, but she did it in kindergarten—-and they were done with the reading papers in january or february.personally, i hate the pressure they are putting on the kids now to perform at younger and younger ages. when i was in kindergarten, we had nap time.December 17, 2008 at 10:03 pm #59689AnonymousInactiveOur school still has naptime in Kindergarten. They also teach you letters, colors, numbers, shapes, alaphabet, your home address, spelling your name…just simple stuff. The issue im going to have is that my 4 going to be 5 year old, can read, write, knows all his numbers, colors, shapes, home address, alaphabet, and can even do simple math, which includes double digit addition and subtraction.
He is extremely smart, and very curious, and a child of his knowledge the school and teachers will want him to advance to 1st grade….which I wont allow them to do, because even though my son is smart….there is still a lot more he can learn from kindergarten. -
