I am having those nagging thoughts again about my almost 2 year old- is this reflux or____?He has has stopped napping, not eating great, has a red rash around his mouth and bum, and is so cranky. Oh and waking up a few nights here and there. That is not like him, he is such a sleeper… This has been going on for about 3 weeks. We weaned him off prevacid soon after his 18 month appt, so I would say by 20 months he took his last dose. He will be 2 in Jan.
Am I crazy? I keep thinking oh no, it’s just teeth, but I can’t see/feel any. I think he is done in that dept for awhile really. I looked down his throat with a flashlight ( yes I am crazy ) to see if it was red and it was, BUT he just caught a cold, so who knows.
The only things food wise that I know of that bother him are cream cheese and cinnamon. He had a cinnamon thingy a few weeks ago and the red rash on his bottom/mouth appeared, but should it be out of his system if that’s what it was?
Should I be giving him mylanta just to see if that helps any? I can’t even remember how much, it’s been that long…Just needing to vent! Thanks!December 13, 2008 at 10:06 am #59524hellbenntKeymasterthe rash has me thinking food….maybe cut out ALL dairy for 2 weeks and see what happens? that would be HARD, I know!
for reflux/tummy upset at that age (and older) I give tums…they can chew them…the tropical fruit smooth dissolve is mspi safe, I do believe…December 13, 2008 at 12:40 pm #59529AnonymousInactiveThanks Laura! I found the chewable mylantas and he likes taking them. I don’t think it’s milk, but he did test mildly to it ( at the time reacting not so mildly ) at around 6 months. He seems fine with all milk products except cream cheese. Can a milk allergy flare up later??
How many mylantas/tums can I give him you think? I have been giving him one before lunch and one before nap/bed. Has help some days ( I guess ) and others he still stays/gets up…
December 13, 2008 at 2:16 pm #59533hellbenntKeymasterI’m not sure if it could flare up later, but I would think that you’d know by cutting it out for 2 weeks, lol. easy for ME to say!
anyway, no creamcheese is no loss, lol, if you look at the ingredients there’s ‘nothing’ that nutritious in it (% calcium, % vitamins, etc)…I would think that 2 a day is fine, but there is aluminum in them, so I’m not sure how long-term use goes? maybe try pepcid complete chewables?December 15, 2008 at 10:48 am #59582AnonymousInactiveI just wanted to chime in about a couple things…
Tums:
-The adult formula Tums Smoothies contain milk & gluten/wheat.
-For my 2yo we use the Tums Kids. They are specifically formulated for ages 2-11. They contain gluten/wheat, but no milk.
When my 2yo (no reflux or intolerances issues whatsoever) started waking up a lot @ night (around 21mths old) it was ear & adenoid issues. He was a super-sleeper until this point. This would certainly not explain the red mouth & bum, but would explain naps, nighttime & eating.
I guess I would take him to the general ped just to check his ears, but in the meantime make an appt w/ an ENT just in case?!
