Thank goodness this forum exists…I don’t know what I’d do without it!

We split the dose & gave my son approx. 1.25ml yesterday morning & then 1.25ml with his bottle before bed. We’ve been putting the liquid in an ounce of formula, giving it to him, waiting a little bit & then giving him another 5 ounces.

Well, he woke up every hour last night, crying. My husband & I have been up all night & are exhausted. The ONLY difference has been the meds. My DS sometimes sleeps from 8:30pm – 7am, but usually he wakes once in the night around 3-5am. So this is highly unusual…he’s NEVER done this.

Has anyone else experience something similar so soon with Prilosec? We had a similar experience with Zantac…he screamed & screamed. He seems MORE uncomfortable than he did before.

it takes a good 2 weeks before you see the results of a PPI such as prilosec…so perhaps ‘all’ you are seeing is untreated reflux rearing it’s ugly head?

unfortunately, you do not know if the prilosec is compounded properly?

also I do not know if it’s a proper dose for baby’s weight?

in the link below, it tells you that the dose needs to be a certain mg/ml to even be affective? it’s so hard!
1. Make sure that the concentration is between 2 mg/mL and 4 mg/mL. This means that for every milliliter of suspension, you are giving between 2 and 4 milligrams of drug.
Ask that your pharmacist make the compound with 16.8% sodium bicarbonate if the total volume of each dose is less than 7 mL.

As I mentioned in my other post, I begged the pharmacist to make it the way I asked & she refused to take marci-kids as a reputable source for the info. The only thing I could do would be to contact his ped & ask for the meds to be changed & site that Sick Kids hospital only used the compound for tube feeding. But in the mean time, we were trying what the gave us.

However…my point is, even if this is a super low dose, which I’m hearing it is, is it normal for him to have a reaction like that?

The waking up is def. NOT from the reflux. As I said, he has NEVER done this before…ever. Not even when first born when his reflux was at it’s worst. The only change has been the Prilosec.

I wish I knew what else to say…how frustrating for you.

I guess try no meds or just zantac and wait until you get either the fastabs (prevacid) or capsules and either pears or w/ bufferbabies…

If you noticed him reacting to the zantac it may be that he’s reacting to the prilosec. Prilosec can be very bitter. Maybe it’s too hard on his tummy. I’d do what Laura suggested and take out the prilosec, cont. w/the zantac and see how he does. Then let your Ped know about it, maybe they’ll be more willing to change the med that way.

Question…Have you kept him on the zantac while starting the prilosec? Maybe like what Laura said…He’s getting breakthrough acid b/c the prilosec needs to get into his system?! Sorry I don’t have any better info for ya!

He hasn’t been on Zantac in a month or more. He reacted the way he did, we took him off, then we went away on vacation before the ped could call back with an appointment time. When we came back we called & that’s when the upper GI was ordered & then he was placed on Prilosec. I feel bad, because his reflux is nowhere near what some LO’s suffer…I read all of the terrible situations some people are going through & it breaks my heart.

Oliver is really really happy overall…it’s mainly his naps he seems to have an issue with a small amount of pain.

I’m wondering if medicating him is even the best solution. I don’t want him to be in ANY pain, but if he doesn’t take well to Zantac or Prilosec [maybe it has something to do with the compounds that were made] than I’d rather him be on nothing at all.

If you’re only concerned about pain at naptime then an H2 (Zantac) might be best for you with a dose given midday.

Were you given the Syrup? or did you have the Zantac compounded? The syrup can be harsh on LO’s with it’s peppermint flavour and alcohol content.

And you’re best not to give a PPI directly with food. Losec is horrible, Prevacid is a much better PPI choice.

zantac also comes in an efferdose, not sure if it’s made it’s way to Canada yet. But it’s in the US. Something to look into.
