Hi i was wandering if someone could help me with questions.
i am a new mum of a 6 week old and living with interfering extended family. i wanted to establish brest feeding but due to family pressures.. constant nit picking verbal and even threatening behav from my mother in law i was never supported in breast feeding my child.
i tried to establish excluive brest feeding but found that my baby didnt seem to b getting satoisfied on my milk since i had sat with him for 4 hours trying to feed but he kept happy for about 10 mins theen started crying again. i thought maybe this was abnormal. i spoke to my midwife in the who advised me to breast feed then top up with formula milk.
my midwife never told me my babys constant feeing was normal but suggested i swap from sma gold to aptamil since that would be closer to my breast milk.
at 4 weeks we started giving our baby aptamil, hopwever aptamil gave my baby veyr very very watery pooh and also it seemed he found hard to digest the new milk because he kept bringing up loadsa milk. we trieed him on aptamil for about a week… i was soo concerned i called nhs direct,- who told me that if he wasnt settled between feeds then maybe think about whether aptamil suits him. i spoke to a midwife who told me that i should stick it out for a while cos it takes time for baby to get used to new milk. i then called aptamil myself. they told me that the formulation of their milk was diff to normal milks beuacse it had firnedly bacteria which wa causing the runny pooh and vomitting.
in the end i felt aptamil was causing my baby more discomfort than was worth it so i switched back to sma.
b4 i gave baby aptamil baby seemed settled, i was ablemto breast feed and give him sma to top up. however during aptamil and afte aptamil i found baby wouldnt latch on propoerly.. he would suck for about 1o mins at the breast then cry and scream due to frusttartion.
even now i am very upset because it woulkd seem that due to lack of family support for various reasons my baby began to get more and more bottle fed than i wanted.as a consequence now he wont readily take from my breast.
anyways.. thats not the main issue that i have. at the moment my baby is six weeks old and wanting a feed almost constantly. evry half hour to an hour he wants a feed. i have npoticed that he arches his back alot after a feed and chews his fingers. he also brought up a;lot of mik after burping. he generally doesnt seem a happy baby when he seems to b hungry which now appears to b most of the time. although he will smile now and again and does want to play etc.
duing the day he appears to have difficulty sleeping.. he will nod off for 5-10 mins and then wqakeup crying for a feed. in one feeding he can easily have about 4-5 ounces which is normal. but qafter the big feed he will cry maybe 10 mins later for more milk.. sometimes taking another 4 ounces or maybe jsut 1-2 ounces.
i’m not sure what to do,my midwife seems hopeless as is my gp. currently my breast feeding seems minute and bottle feeding provides most of my baby nutrition.
shouold iconsider sma for hungrieer babies? i am soo scared to try other milok because of the headache i got from aptamil before. also i dont know if baby is ahving a growth spurt hence wanting mpore milk..
currently his feeidng is erratic.. his feeding times are all over the place because i found i am doing an awful lot of cluster feeding.
he will demand more milk and often burp up lots of milk.
does anyonee have any suggestions.. so sorry for a looong post!!
in a nutshell after feedings he constantly seems uncomfortable.. arching his back etc.. even his facial expression he seems lke he has alot of wind and generally not happy. soon after feedings he cried.. sometimes sticks his tongue out rooting.. or chewing hsi hands.. i am not sure if he is just haing a growth spurt hence more milk… but i am concerned that he looks uncomfortable after feeding.. could he have reflux of some sort? could the aptamil have messed his system up? nany idea what coulkd be done for him??
p.shis usual feed was max 4 ounces.. every 3 hours. now he has 5 ounces plus cluster feeding of 1-4 ounces within a 3 hour slot.

Can you try to get into a Gastroenterologist???? I owuld see if the Gi can get a PPI on board.
If I am remembering properly the SMA gold is pretty good stuff. I know some people who are in AUS whose children have GERD and that is what they used. -
