Im so confused. So I got tired of seeing and hearing my sweet Conner in so much pain. My doctor refused a referal to a Pediatric GI specialist, and refused to switch from Zantac to a PPI. My doctor pretty much said the reasons behind my childs behavior is due to over feeding….I was not happy to say the least. So in an outrage I packed a diaper bag, made some bottles and flew my hiney to the closest ER with Conner. I walked in and told them everything that Conner was doing from day one and what we were going through, and that I was not going to leave that hospital until someone told me what was wrong with my baby. I knew my son had reflux, but I wanted to make sure there wasn’t anything specific causing it, like Heidel Hernia, or premature esophogus.
So Triage see’s us, does there annoying pesky thing. Then they take me straight to a room in the ER. I see 2 doctors, one is a Student(BLAH) and one is a seasoned ER physician. They asked me the normal questions about Conner, his eating habits, his history from day one…..since he isnt very old lol. I told them everything. That Conner from day one has had colic symptoms that never decreased with formula changes, that he coughs often with no other cold symptoms, he gags, he regergitates, and he spits up , sometimes it’s a teaspoon of spitup other times its projectile vomiting his whole bottle. So the hospital took us back, did his vitals and took X-rays. Then we waitied for what seemed like an eternity. Finally the female student came running in all out of breath. I of course started wondering what was wrong…maybe she got the wrong room? Anywho, she sat down and told me they found an Abnormality(sp) withen Conners intestines…..an Ileus..basically a twisted intestine. She comensed to telling me that I was being transfered to DMC Childrens hospital and that a Pediatric GI and a Pediatric surgeon would talk to me. She also said we needed to make arrangements to stay at the Ronald Mcdonald house…that my baby will be in the hospital for a very long time. She said he will have a feeding tube inserted for god knows how long, and that they will have to work very hard surgically to untwist his intestines. So I of course am relieved to know that something was *wrong* and I wasn’t just being some cazy lunatic mother, but I was also freaked out about the results and prognosis. I immediatley called my husband, he got a babysitter for the other boys and rushed in.About 20 min later the doctor comes back stating that EMS will be transporting my son to Childrens hospital. He will be taken straight to the Trauma unit at Childrens, and that whoever wanted to ride with Conner, had to sit upfront and not in the back with him….making it sound as if my son could die at any moment, so my husband opted to go with the EMS, because if something were to happen to Conner on the way there….the EMS would need their own hospital rooms aswell.So….We get to Childrens after a 2 hour drive (bad weather). They give us a room (turtle 7) and a Pediatric ER doctor comes in and of course gets Conners *Brief* history of everything….same speal at the other hospital. The doctor is calm and taking his time, meanwhile I tell him he needs to hurry up and fix my child instead of lollygaging around the hospital…I was p i s s e d. So he took the history down, sent us to X-ray…did that AGAIN!….and sent us to ultrasound which the other hospital didnt do. We once again sat and waited for what seemed an eternity. I was thinking the worse, and hubby was comforting me as much as he could. The doc comes in and sits down. He says the unbelievable….Every test they did came out 100% normal, no sign of an Ileus at all. And that the pain and issues Conner is having is indeed his Acid Reflux. So he upped the Zantac (which isnt working) to 0.7 ML’s twice a day, and gave me a number to follow up with a Pediatric GI, and is going to prescribe me a PPI! I begged my family doc for a PPI and he refused. So Prevacid it is, but I of course need to wait a few days.Who do I believe in this situation? Each hospital gave me 2 different explanations. Im scared my son Might still have an Ileus, but maybe he doesnt. Im confused, and I dont know what I should do.Any Advice would be helpful.November 26, 2008 at 3:49 pm #59013hellbenntKeymasteryikes!!! what an ordeal!!
well, I am so glad you at least got some attention- horrible way to get it!I would FIRE your pediatrician ASAP!!! Fax him/her a good-bye letter. If it would make you feel any better, write a letter to the board of Pediatricians in your state- not sure how to do that but I bet you could google it…then I would follow up w/ the ped GI and keep calling every day to get in on the cancellation list. I would TELL the ped GI to please explain to you, in terms you can understand, WHY one hospital/dr would make such a commotion about an Ileus and now the second dr/ER is saying it isn’t true.I’m guessing that the sonogram/ultrasound showed everything was ok, but still, get the explanation for your own piece of mind.I would be prepared for the ped GI visit. TELL what you want/expect.Start with the PPI and, in the meantime, continue to give the zantac making sure to give it 4 hrs seperate from the prevacid. I would just go ahead & calculate the zantac at 10mgs per kilo…hang in there!!November 26, 2008 at 5:45 pm #59016AnonymousInactivehellbennt- Thank you, and I am going to fire my doctor. He made me even more upset today. I called him because my Ped GI said to switch Conner’s formula to Enfamil A.R. for his GERD symptoms, and said that sometimes in non severe cases it works so well that Conner may not even needs meds, which I would prefer, BUT if he still needs meds, I will continue them. My family doctor(pediatrician) advised NOT to switch to A.R. and just add baby cereal, when the A.R. is safer from alergies because it doesnt use the actual rice, it just uses the starch derived from the rice, and is much safer.
He also said to minimize feedings to 2 ounces every 3-4 hours! My poor baby would starve at that amount, and with the A.R. it may fill him up more so that we can do smaller feedings more often, or he can eat regular amounts without the spitup. They also said that A.R. relieves gas pains, GERD pains and so forth helping babies sleep better at night. So I went ahead an switched him since my GI said to try it.
Has anyone used A.R. and had good results? I’d love to hear others opinions and results using this formula.

If you are struggling to know who to believe…can you get a third opinion?? It just seems strange to go from something seeming so urgent to a 100% normal diagnosis! Yikes!
Good luck to you and keep fighting for your little man!! HANG IN THERE!!November 26, 2008 at 10:28 pm #59020AnonymousInactiveMy firsst ?? would be Was the 1st ER an ADULT hosptial or was it a children’s hosp. as well???
There is a HUGE HUGE difference betwen DX adults with their issues and DX children with their issues. This coudlpossibly explain WHY the one hosptial woudl say one thing and the ER at he children’s hopstial would say another. What kids of tests did the 2 places do???If I am remembering correctly you need an UGI (upper GI) in order to see if the intestines are malrotated. AND you need to make sure they follow the baruim solution ALL the way through the system so that it can get ALL of the intestines on the films. That could take a while and your hcild would be on the table strapped down for a while, but that is the best way to do it. IMHO 🙂Again, JMHO but I really thin kthe reason you got the two drastic different ex0plainations is becuase one was an adult hopat (I am assuming) and one was a Peds hosptial.Persoanlly I’d go with the Ped’s hospital. Thye ahve more experience workign with small bodies and their small anatomoy. It’s a WHOLE different ball game when it comes to kids.Don’t ge tme started on you you know what of a Pedi….I’ll jsut leave it at that NO DR whoudlEVER treat their patients that way. If I were you, I’d lodge a formal complaint for sure. BTW tryign to treat GERD is way out of a Peds leauge. JMHO agian, but we have a GREAT pedi who has been practicing for years and years (she’s about 55 years old) and she wsa the first to admit that Jedd’s issues were out of her leaugue. She has actually learned ALOT of things from Jedd’s case tha I pass along to her.She is thankful for that greatly and always picks my brain when I go in with him for checkups….LOLIf you are worried I’d ask to have another UGI done and see hwat becomes of that. I would certainly find anothe rPedi who will get you on a short GI list to get in ASAP.With the conflicting resluts someone should be seeing you ASAP as in YESTERDAY!!!LOLThey need to get it resolved becaus IF there is a malrotation (not to scare you) it needs to be fixed ASAP or some of the bolwes or the palce hwere th emalrotatin is located can die. So please use those Mommy instincts and get in now. Even though it’s a holiday.November 26, 2008 at 11:10 pm #59022AnonymousInactivewell, i’d think an ultra sound would be alot more accurate than an x-ray when it comes to soft tissue. get that ped gi called ASAP and asked to be put on a cancellation list if they don’t get you in right away.
November 26, 2008 at 11:16 pm #59025AnonymousInactiveJessica- The first hospital was an adult hospital, they rarely seen pediatrics for reflux, colic and so forth, they usually seen children for the common cold and so forth, the second one was a childrens hospital.
I got the prescription for Previcid FINALLY, now how long does it take to work? Can I continue both the prevecid and zantac together? If so how far apart do I give them from eachother. Now what about him having a milk protien issue? I dont see this really as the case, because on Nutramigen is when this all started and thats a hypoallergenic formula. Should I try him on Prosobbe again with his meds….or should I see if the A.R. is going to work, he got worse tonight with crying for the past 5 hours and nothing will comfort him since eating the Enfamil A.R., Should I discontinue the A.R. and do prosobee.Im at my wits end, I dont know what to do. Im at a loss. My other children were never this hard of a guessing game, it was always Lactose intolerant OR colic, But now im dealing with a gerdling with possibly some other type of issue….like a formula intolerance.Any help is very much appreciated.November 26, 2008 at 11:28 pm #59027AnonymousInactiveWhat about MSPI? Is there a link on the forum for info on symptoms of MSPI? Does WIC cover Neocate, WIC here in Michigan does Enfamil and Similac….Does Enfamil have an Amino Acid formula for MSPI babies? And do you gals think that WIC would cover Neocate if I got a prescription from my NEW and IMPROVED Doctor…who btw…is also a pediatric ER physician and works in his own office as a reg. pediatrician and is partnered with a Ped. GI lol.
I was asking him about this.OHHHHH one more thing before I forget….How in the world do I get the previcid Solutabs(Melting tabs) into conner? They said not to put it in formula as it can dilute the medication to much, and that he needs it 30 min before he eats.November 27, 2008 at 8:12 am #59031hellbenntKeymasterYES yes, WIC will cover the formula, whatever it is! You’re right, you might need a letter, etc, but your dr will work with you…ok there are links to (practically) everything from Groupie Intro, lol!https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853&PN=1&TPN=1 so: keep this handy in case I can’t get to the computer, lolol!!!I think I would first concentrate on the meds:2) how to administer the solutabs, from Prevacid 101(last post on the page): https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=13) from Prevacid 101 (link above) read about caracream/bufferbabies!3) Mspi/allergy info(‘main page’): https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2697&PN=1&TPN=1Sheri’s allergy/intolerance explanation; https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=10223&PID=87638#87638Another Sheri explanation- intolerance/allergy post:https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11579&PID=97442#97442
November 27, 2008 at 12:59 pm #59034AnonymousInactiveHellbennt- Thank you once again! This forum has truly been a life saver for me. I do however believe that Conner has a severe milk intolerance. His spitting up and fussiness didnt start until I used the Nutramigen which I do believe still has the *Complete Protien* of milk. I do think it is GER/GERD but I also think it is being made worse with a milk allergy.
So Im trying Prosobee……I know WIC is going to be annoyed because I have switched my formula twice in the past month….but hopefully they understand the Formula *game*Thanks for the links! I also got Conner to take his Prevacid Solutabs by letting him suck on it while I held the tab, and once it granulated I put his binky in and he was fine!November 28, 2008 at 11:55 pm #59055AnonymousInactiveConners_Mommy wrote: Hellbennt- Thank you once again! They provided him with a VERY VERY expensive +1 formula so I’m sure they could do the same for you.He was on Peptamen Jr with Prebio fiber, ever heard of that one….LOL It’s a great plus one formula that is VERTY broken down so that his GI system coudl do less work to digest it. It also comes flavoured…so he was willing to take something orally for the first tiem ever. He would NEVER take that ansty nasty Alimentu, UGH voimit in a can that stuff was…*gag gag*They shouldn’t give you an issue as long as you have that form filled out or have an RX for the forumla you need.November 29, 2008 at 12:00 am #59056AnonymousInactiveSo We put Conner on the Prosobee….and so far it has worked wonderfully. He still seems a tad on the colicy side with wanting to gorge himself and being a little fussy…although this time I can comfort him.
His *so called* baby acne is 100% gone! I doubt it was acne, but a rash from the milk allergy. He does have a tad more gas than usual too, but his first night on the prosobee he slept from 9pm until 5am, and so far it is an hour passed his feeding time and he is sound asleep! He still needs a tad bit of tweaking to be completely happy, but I can atleast get a few smiles out of him now. -
