Damn, Firefox just ate my very long post..
Background:
Exclusively breastfed baby is three months old.. has GERD, laryngomalacia, was level 3 and labial tongue tied and is EXTREMELY gassy.Every 2-3 hours after a meal he writhes in gas pain. During daytime the frequent feedings (every two hours) keeps in under control, but at night, he thrashes his head around and cries in his sleep while trying to pass gas.
I’m not getting any sleep and my baby is in severe pain..
My question is if the gas pain is a direct result of the excess air swallowing caused by the laryngomalacia (also dx with dysphagia) or if it could be related to my diet?
I have seen some mucus in stools and he has red around his bottom.
I have been on Total elimination diet for 6 days now and no improvement (have been off soy and dairy for about 15 days).
Any insights would be so appreciated, I’m completely emotionally and mentally exhausted!!

Is he having stinky gas?
When you say mucous – does it look like snot? What’s the consistency?
It took my ds 5+ wks of very strict TED before his stools regulated & he felt better so hang in there & feel free to PM me.

Your LO’s symptoms sound just like mine (larygomalacia). It was diagnosed at 10 weeks because he started choking while eating (and sometimes just when lying down!).
To answer your questions, yes, the gas is often stinky but not always.
The mucus that I saw once was a long stringy strand that looked almost like dried up rubber cement (you know, like that stuff they use to attach credit cards to paper?) and another time totally clear like clear snot.I haven’t seen it actually since last week, so maybe it was a one time occurrence?
Yikes, I can’t believe it took you 5 weeks of TED to see a difference!
Reading through these forums particularly the sleep forum it seems that his crazy nighttime behavior (every 3 hour crying in sleep) is really common in reflux babies and maybe my assumption that it’s gas and not reflux is incorrect? It SEEMS to me that he’s trying to pass gas because sometimes when he does he settles down and goes back to sleep, but maybe all that thrashing just coincidentally makes him fart?
It’s really difficult to pinpoint anything when there are so many things that could be the problem (reflux, air swallowing, possibility of allergies etc!)

I would just keep smelling for stinky gas (or lack thereof hopefully). I know that sounds weird, but for us that’s the single most accurate indicator of the offender/intolerance. Obviously, it could be diff’t for everybody though…
For Evan the sleeplessness is a couple of things… first & foremost it’s intestinal pain that causes him to thrash, wiggle, squirm & then many times also pass gas. Also, the intolerances cause him some degree of insomnia it seems. Again, this is just our experience but I believe some other TED moms have reported that as well.
I just realized I just responded to your supply post as well. Hang in there!
November 21, 2008 at 1:16 pm #58864AnonymousInactiveHave you tried Mylicon? I know it’s been found that simethicone works as well as a placebo, but nonetheless, it works for our son to relieve his gassiness. You might want to give it a try. I’m on day 17 of TED, so I feel your pain! Hang in there!
November 24, 2008 at 5:11 pm #58948AnonymousInactivehi Kristin, Mylicon never did much for Jasper 🙁
How is TED going for you? I strayed when my supply tanked a bit and now he’s all gassy again.. also saw mucus in poo this morning.. so back to basic TED!
