I’ve been keeping a strict baseline for almost a week now… that’s potatoes, pears, squash/zucchini, beef, sea salt & pepper for us.
2-3 days ago Evan’s diapers & sleep started to regulate again. Then, yesterday he had some stinky gas (but fairly normal diaper), last night he woke up FIVE times & then this morning had an all mucous diaper.
The only things that have changed are:
a) I sprinkled some cinnamon on my pears 2 nights ago before bed. It was only a tiny bit & I was dying for some change-lol.
b) Yesterday in the late afternoon Evan had a sippy w/ water. He’s been DYING for solids &/or a sippy (literally pulling anything & everything away from us) so I’ve been giving him a sippy w/ just plain water in it the past few wks & he gets so excited.
Any ideas? Do you think either of these could have caused the change? I’m thinking that cinnamon (on Dr. Sear’s list of ‘most allergenic foods’) is more likely the culprit (eventhough it was such a tiny amount) but w/ Evan I can’t count anything out. 😉
It’s so frustrating!!!
November 14, 2008 at 11:50 am #58702AnonymousInactiveOh, also – I forgot to give Evan his probiotic yesterday… could that be it? I give it nearly every day but there’s probably 1-2x/wk that I forget.
November 14, 2008 at 12:14 pm #58705AnonymousInactiveCould be probiotic clearing out his system? or the cinnamon? probably not the water…. Or a gi 24 hour bug?
November 15, 2008 at 9:14 am #58725hellbenntKeymasterI have heard of people being allergic to cinnamon…so I guess clear that out and then try again and see if that’s what it is? poor you & poor evan! what’s a mama to eat? can you eat basil? or cilantro? just thinking as I type of some varied flavors…how about vanilla, as in some natural vanilla extract to put on your pears? or maple syrup?
November 15, 2008 at 1:21 pm #58727AnonymousInactiveI’m guessing the cinnamon too. Maybe try some brown sugar?
November 15, 2008 at 8:41 pm #58731AnonymousInactiveJeeper Erin…Cinnamon too! I don’t know how you have survived for six months! Hats off to you…you are amazing. 🙂
November 15, 2008 at 9:38 pm #58733AnonymousInactiveWell, I’m pretty sure it was the cinnamon. I had that on Wednesday night… his sleep has been AWFUL the past 2 nights (as were the diapers & stinky gas). Today he had a better diaper & no stinky gas… we’ll see how sleep is tonight. I still continue to be floored @ how sensitive his little system is!
Yeah, I know a little girl (Brodie’s age) that’s allergic to cinnamon as well. It’s weird though. Brodie has a peanut/tree nut allergy & never reacted (well, that I recall) when I ate peanuts/pb while nursing… but then again I wasn’t keeping a food diary or anything with what I ate, etc & I don’t recall eating a ton of nuts or peanut butter.
Thanks for the suggestions Laura & Naomi… I think brown sugar is fine – I’ll keep that in mind. Don’t know about vanilla or other spices. I’ve tried rosemary (on potatoes) & I don’t think they were okay. Sigh…
It would be interesting if it was the cinnamon b/c in the early TED days when I was still eating sweet potatoes & rice I was putting cinnamon on both. Eventually I cut out both of those items b/c I thought he was reacting poorly to them – but maybe (just maybe?!) it was not the sweet potatoes & rice necessarily but the cinnamon?! Who knows @ this point…
erinntx 2008-11-15 21:39:42 November 15, 2008 at 10:14 pm #58735AnonymousInactiveErin: I am so proud of you for your endurance on this limited diet! Way to go, Mommy-of-the-Century!
It is very interesting that you used to put cinnamon on your sweet potatoes and rice back then. After you get Evan cleared up from this cinnamon challenge, it would be very interesting to see if he will tolerate sweet potatoes in your diet!!By the way, my sister is allergic to several things including cinnamon and oats. My mom now looks back regretfully about her efforts to send us off to school with a good, healthy, filling breakfast of oatmeal with cinnamon and brown sugar. Hindsight is always 20/20…!November 16, 2008 at 10:40 am #58740AnonymousInactiveholy cow, i thought i was nuts thinking madelyn may be sensitive to cinnamon! i’m sooo glad to see your post…i was too scared to ask about this b/c i thought i would be considered cukoo!! madelyn’s list of sensitivities continues to grow (or i may just be finding out more and more…) and i never thought i’d be adding cinnamon to that list. thanks for posting this!
where did you find the list of most allergenic foods? i would love that website.
i hear you on desiring some variation! sigh. we can do it, we can do it…!
November 16, 2008 at 1:57 pm #58744AnonymousInactiveoh Erin! After a week, so that you know his system is back to normal, I would definitely try the sweet potatoes again. Sweet potatoe fries are YUM, and if he can handle the brown sugar, then a baked sweet potato with brown sugar is almost like a dessert. It would certainly add some variation to the diet. I hope they work this time around!!
November 16, 2008 at 8:19 pm #58754AnonymousInactiveI know- sweet potatoes sound like a dream these days-lol. I’ll maybe try them again sometime soon.
Gina: here’s that list/website: http://www.askdrsears.com/html/4/T041800.asp#T041805
Thanks ladies!
