just curious… our ped said that our 8 week old daughter would need an upper gi before he could prescribe the next medication. He was wanting to rx reglan. We want to go to our older son’s specialist (appt this wed) and just ask to go on a ppi instead– zegerid preferably. The ped said that the ped gi would still probably want us to do an upper gi. I can’t imagine that they would deny acid reduction meds in an obvious case of reflux to wait on an upper gi…. Anyone got info on this?

Your gi may or may not want you to get one…but I highly doubt he will make you have one before he will prescribe meds!

I would say that if you are going to your other childs doc then since there is the history you may be able to get what you want since they will know you from before. If not they may still do an upper gi just to check for structural issues.
November 12, 2008 at 12:23 am #58584AnonymousInactiveThanks, it makes me feel relieved to think that you guys are thinking the same thing that I am. I am hoping that because he’s seen us for three and half years with my son that he’ll be willing to work with me. I also really feel that since I’ve been though this before and he knows that i’m an “experienced” reflux mom, that he will trust my instincts…. we’ll see. Funny thing is, our son had an upper gi at 5 months old and it did not catch his hiatal hernia and we were miserable for a looooong time wondering why his reflux wasn’t getting better until his endoscopy at 11 mos. So, I guess it doesn’t even always catch those things, either. I just couldn’t remember if this was a procedural sort of thing or not. I’ll let you guys know what happens….thanks for all the support.

November 12, 2008 at 10:45 pm #58618AnonymousInactiveHi,
We saw Lucas’ ped gi today and he gave us an rx for zegerid! yay! He acted like that would be a completely normal course of action and I even asked him if an upper gi would be necessary (I didn’t want one done, so I probably shouldn’t have even asked, but I was so curious) and he said no that we could try the ppi and then if this doesn’t work, then do an upper gi. That makes sense to me.
So i checked on Marci kids last night for dosing and our doc dosed Norah for the 40mg packets at 2.5 mls 2Xday. I know marci kids likes three times a day…. She was 10.4 lbs in the office with her diaper on, so maybe a wee bit less than that is her weight. I’m guessing that this is a low dose compared to marci kids, but haven’t checked yet. We just had two hours of crying and fussing and trying to be civil to my four year old while it all happened so I’m off to bed.
Lori, it’s the same ped, he is super nice just very old fashioned I guess when it comes to the reflux meds. I really didn’t want her on reglan, even though some folks have such good results with it. Marci kids doesn’t say very good things about it. And yes, its the same ped we see with Lucas.

is he having you mix it like they say to on Marci-kids? I checked and they say 18-24mg…but I am not sure what your concentration is of the Zegerid….but I guess with this you can see. Also, and I know you know this, but it could take a while to see the effect of the Zegerid. I hope things start to get better for you! -
