Infantreflux.org | How much is too much spit up?

Max is now 4 months old. He still spits up A LOT!!! My concern is the amount he is spitting up. He usually spits up 3 good puddles with EACH burp. Then, usually 5-6 more puddles before his next feeding.

Everyone around me thinks something is really wrong with him besides reflux. He can have a bottle and still be spitting it up 4 hours later.

I just thought it was normal for Max and that he just has a really severe case but now I’m worried maybe it’s more than just reflux.

Does anyone else have the same issue with their baby? Am I alloying people to make me paranoid for nothing?

I understand no one around me gets the point that reflux is just something we have to deal with. I hate that we have to but we do. I think it’s just reflux but my family and friends are making me lose my mind!

reflux seems to peak at 4-6 months.

is weight gain an issue? or is he gaining fine? this is what I would look at…that and if he’s in pain…

He is quite a roly poly. Weight was an issue until he was put on the prevacid. Since then he seems happy…he just spits up TONS!

JMO…You say that he can be spitting up even 4hrs after having eaten? Have you considered DGE(delayed gastric emptying)? I feel like that’s all I talk about lately, but my DD would spit up hrs after a feeding and it was more than likely due to DGE. She hasn’t had any official testing, but she is on erythromycin to help empty her stomach faster so there isn’t anything in there to reflux. I have noticed MAJOR improvements. Maybe it’s something to consider and talk to your Ped about. OR if Max is eating fine and isn’t in any pain, then I’d not worry too much about it. Some babies spit up A LOT, it’s just a matter of if there’s pain or not. Is your Ped. concerned about it?

I’d ask about DGE. My son has it and it causes A LOT of spit up since the food sits in his tummy for longer than “normal”. We also tried erythromycin and saw no difference at all so we stopped it. It doesn’t hurt him anymore (prilosec), but it’s a major pain the rear. We’re currently trying to find meds that will help his food stay down.

Have you had an upper gi done?? It is possible that he has pyloric stenosis, but I would imagine if he did weight gain would be an issue. Otherwise as long as he is happy you really don’t have anything to worry about.
