My son was diagnosed with reflux at 1 month. My husband and I were surprised, he had always been fussy and spit up but we didn’t really correlate the two. He was breastfed at the time , but we were supplementing with Similac. We gave him the prescribed Zantac for 3 days and he seemed even fussier so we stopped using the Zantac. I continued to breastfeed him but stopped using the formula. He continued to spit up, but it got better and he was becoming less and less fussy. Then at 3 months we weaned him to formula. Ever since then we have had problems. The Similac was constipating him which caused him to spit up more. He seemed really uncomfortable. I tried nutrimagen for 2 days. He was even fussier and had a huge runny bowel movement. That day I took him to the doctor. She said to go back to the Similac and use doctor Brown’s Bottles. She said that since it seemed like the constipation was making the reflux worse (which I agree with) to give him pear juice when he didn’t have a bowel movement for 24 hours. We also started the Zantac again. I followed this for a couple of days, but then decided to try Nestle Good Start b/c I had heard good things about it. We are on the second day and he is spitting up constantly. Much more than on the Similac and he is not even constipated b/c he had a huge bowel movement yesterday. My question is should I keep trying with the Good Start? Is he just adjusting to it or is there some reason why the Good Start could be causing him to spit up more? If anyone has any thoughts I could really use some help.

I am new to this forum as well. I do know that when switching formula’s you should give the new formula at least 2 weeks. Also try slowly introducing the formula to him ( 1/2 similac, 1/2 Good Start) for about a week. And do the same with the Zantac, I did hear that babies that are put on Zantac get worse before they get better. So I would as well give the Zantac some time. Similac is also very constipating I have found out ( I work in the Nursery at our local hospital). I have noticed that moms who have switched there babies to similac after already introducing them to another formula or from being breastfeed, seem to get very constipated and have belly aches. Not sure why, this is just my observation. Maybe try something to thicken the good start with. You can ask around on this board as I have heard of things to thicken formula, for some reason I have heard not to thicken it with rice cereal, so I would ask. This may help with the spitting up a little. Also I used Good Start Natural Cultures with my son as he has a bowel problem, and his stools were tremendously better on it. I would also try plum juice instead of pear. They have it in the juice section in the grocery store and it has added fiber that will help with keep him unconstipated. Hope this helps some until an expert can answer you question…LOLOctober 28, 2008 at 2:08 pm #58128AnonymousInactivemy daughter puke on good start! the only formula she tolerate is soy formula.

Your baby could have a milk intolerance which could be bothering him with both formulas–you could try a hypoallergenic formula. I think that zantac also constipated finn when he was on it.
welcome!October 30, 2008 at 8:48 pm #58204AnonymousInactiveAs Laura said, I would not thicken feeds. That will only increase the constipation. My son had constipation issues and we took him to a ped. chiropractor and his constipation issues were gone. I am talking about a kid who had bad constipation issues. His docs. had him on at least two meds to help him have a bm.
Is it possible you could get him back to bf? Maybe he’s just not tolerating the formula well along with the reflux issues. If not, maybe some of the other moms have some good formulas you could try. Maybe even give him a formula without iron in it. Iron can be VERY constipating as can soy. -
