HEllo everyone I am new to this forum but I am juat exhausted and need some help…. My sons story is long espically for a 4 month old….
When my son was about 2 weeks old I took him to the Emergancy room because he was weezing and refusing to eat. When we were there the house PED said that he probably had reflux or some other GI problem and that my primary PED needed to send him to a GI doctor… The house PED called my doctor and my doctor said he was fine and that he just had colic and put him on Enfamil Prosobee lipil.
He seemed to do very well until he was about 3 months old on the prosobee and then began having huge quantities of spitting up and pain with his feeds! I called the doctor and he told me to switch him to Enfamil Gentlease! HE did awful on this formula!!!!!
Finally after 2 weeks on this formula I called around and got a different doctor for my son! This doctor automaticcally found a problem and saidhe had severe untreated GERD and a milk protien allergy. She at first put him on Zantac and Carafate and the Zantac really did no good! She then switched him to Prevacid wnich seems to be a little better! HE is still not wanting to eat too good and screams constantly… (he is now on Similac Alimentum) I have not gotten any sleep and I know he is exhausted! HE also has a doubleear infection and is on Amoxicillan! help me I am so tired!!! What can I do for him????????

October 25, 2008 at 1:13 pm #58024AnonymousInactiveI am with Laura-your dr is an idiot. Seriously-colic? I firmly believe that is the catch all for old school doctors who think that it is acceptable that babies cry all the time-bullpoop!
How long has he been on the Prevacid now?October 25, 2008 at 5:27 pm #58058AnonymousInactiveHe has been on Prevacid for 6 days!
October 26, 2008 at 8:18 am #58061AnonymousInactiveIt can take two weeks before you see full improvement from the prevacid. It was a little over two weeks before we saw huge improvement with my daughter. PPI medications like prevacid help to shut down the over producing acid pumps on the stomach and that can take a little while. I wish it were as easy as a “one dose fix”…but in the long run prevacid should be a great solution for him (if it’s the right form and dose).
I noticed on the other forum that you’re concerned about switching doctors due to medicaid. All doctors should accept medicaid…so it would be at least worth calling around to try to get a 2nd opinion.Good luck and keep us posted!October 26, 2008 at 2:54 pm #58069AnonymousInactiveWhat is the Prevacid dose, what form are you using, and, if it’s the solutabs, remember to wait 30-60 minutes before you feed him.
Also, if he has a true milk allergy, the small amount of milk in Alimentum may still be bothering him. So, an elemental formula like Neocate might need to be the next step. However, I would wait for a week or so more, to let the Prevacid really get working, before you make another change for him.October 26, 2008 at 3:53 pm #58071hellbenntKeymasteryes the prevacid can take up to 14 days to show it’s full effect.
if you still have zantac, you can give that, too! this might give some relief as you wait to see the full effect of the prevacid. you said that the zantac didn’t do anything- what does baby weigh? I can help you figure out the PROPER dose for zantac and you can give it, too, just make sure to give it 4 hours seperate from the prevacid.as for the prevacid:what form is it? solutabs? capsules? a liquid that the pharmacist makes?if it’s the solutabs or the capsules, you have to give on an empty stomach & follow by a meal 30 minutes later. if it’s a liquid that the pharmacist makes, well…that’s another thing we can help you with…October 26, 2008 at 4:56 pm #58077AnonymousInactiveHe is on a liquid that the Pharmacist makes 2.5ml 3x a day. Julian weighs 15 lbs now and when he was on the Zantac he was on 1ml 3x a day. Do you think that the Enfamil Nutramigen AA would help? I have been doing a lot of research and I am afraid that along with the reflux he may also have a Soy allergy! Hmmmm…..
October 26, 2008 at 8:01 pm #58080hellbenntKeymasterok I hate to tell you this, but aside from the prevacid probably not being the proper dose, the liquid most likely is made WRONG…
please read here:Prevacid 101(last post on the page): https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1Nutrimigen might work, but it’s similar to the alimentum your baby is now taking, how long has baby been on alimentum?you need to give it a good 2 weeks whenever you switch formulas….In the meantime, please read the links I’ve given you…zantac: don’t just take my word on this! read here:Zantac dosing- my/other’s question: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=9539&PID=82914#82914
ok so your baby weighs 15lbs. take this and divide by 2.2 to get kilos.
so that’s 6.9kilos
the max dose for zantac by weight is 10mgs per kiloso 6.9 x 10= 69mgs of zantac for the day, totalto find out the liquid, check your bottle, it says 15mgs/mlso take 69 and divide by 15 = 4.6mls total of zantac for the daythis should be given 2 times a day & the doses do not have to be ‘even’you can give more at night, etcex:1ml + 3.6ml1.5ml + 3.1ml2ml + 2.6ml2.3ml + 2.3mlYou can give the zantac, just make sure to give it 4hrs seperate from the prevacidhellbennt2008-10-26 20:04:09
