hi everyone–
i am writing in a fugue state– after another night of being up every hour with finn. he’s napping now, but i can’t b/c i’m stuck on hold with the @#$% ped’s office and have been for 15 minutes!Anyway– the quantity and frequency of his spit ups keeps increasing and i just don’t understand it. his weight gain is slow as he literally spits up 1/4-1/2 of what he eats (i don’t think i’m exaggerating??).
i’m on TED, 30 mg of prevacid…
positioning doesn’t seem to help. he’ll spit up huge when he’s completely upright. he’ll spit up an hour and a half after eating. and…he resists burping now. screams when i try to burp him.
so that’s about 30-40 spit ups a day–big spit ups. is this something you’ve experienced? will it ever slow down?
i feel like crying all day today.—thanks for reading…

Just so that you know- not all babies improve at the 6 month mark. A lot of what you read on the internet will tell you this, and I really got my hopes up when I read it. It sounds like your son might have the spitting a bit longer. Has he had an upper GI to rule out any abnormalities? Jackson had that done around his age and despite the buckets of spit, he was structurally ok.
For us, Jackson spitting continued full force until he was 11 months old. At that time, a miracle happened. He is now 13.5 months old and has gone from 30 mg of prevacid to 15 mg of prevacid and we are going to try to go meds free soon. He NEVER spits anymore. I did not think that it would ever happen, but it did. Jackson spit up buckets right up to the 11 month mark. He did it regardless of position and it could happen hours after a meal.
I tell you that because even though your son is not improving around the 6 month mark does not mean that this will happen forever. It is so hard and I remember spending the day crying too. Just know that it gets better and some babies just require a little bit more time. You are doing all that you can!

I don’t know if you have heard this before but reflux does peak between 4-7 months… you are right in the middle of that. I will say that 5-6 months was when Coopers was at its worst. After he started sitting up on his own and we were able to start small amounts of solids it was uphill from there and once he started pulling to stand and was upright most of the time then we were golden. His sleep was horrible until he was 7-8 months old but didn’t start sleeping through the night until he was 12-13 months old. He actually still took a bottle in the middle of the night until he was 10 months old. You are a good dose of meds so I don’t think that is your issue and since you are doing TED I am not sure what else might be the problem.
October 6, 2008 at 10:00 pm #57455AnonymousInactiveI just wanted to add that McKenzie is 8 months old (as of yesterday ) and she STILL spits up tons! I am BF and supplementing with Neocate due to weight gain issues, but it doesn’t matter if it is Neocate or BM, she still spits up. But since this is my second time around I can tell you…it does get better. Hugs!!!
October 6, 2008 at 11:03 pm #57461AnonymousInactivethanks for the encouragement beth and katie– i always wonder why reflux would peak between 4 and 7 months…(?)
emily– finn has had slow weight gain as well. it’s been slowing down again now that his spit ups are increasing. when did you decide to start supplementing and what triggered you to make that decision? i think about supplementing sometimes, but i wonder how it would help since he seems to get the amount of food he needs, but just ends up spitting it up(?) would the supplement just give him more calories per ounce? thanks for your advice!October 7, 2008 at 7:37 am #57464AnonymousInactiveJackson was born at 7 pounds. He began projectile vomiting at 3 weeks. At 6.5 weeks, he was only 6 pounds. At that point, I had no choice but to supplement with formula. I am not suggesting that you should supplement, but I all I know is that Jackson’s weight was never a problem since formula. I do not think that it is a miracle, but for us, I think that my supply was an issue. Not sure if it was stress or what, but Jackson took to formula and started to gain weight at a healthy pace. Breastfeeding is definitely best for coating a baby’s throat when reflux is an issue, but for us, Jackson was losing weight and he needed some nutrition. It is a hard decision, but FOR ME, I wish that I had started formula sooner and he had not lost weight over the course of 6.5 weeks. Supply is a rare issue though, so my experience does not always translate well into other situations.

the weight gain has always been a stressful issue for us too. i always wonder about my milk supply b/c finn had an inefficient suck in the beginning and my milk suffered. he never lost weight but took 5 weeks to gain back his birth weight….one day he just figured it out and started sucking like crazy and gaining well, but now that the spit ups have increased, i’m worried again. ugh. maybe supplementing would help(?)Finn’s mom2008-10-07 11:15:07
October 7, 2008 at 12:59 pm #57476AnonymousInactivewow, I’m so sorry to hear about Finn’s problems and what you’re having to go through. My dd is around the same age, and she doesn’t spit up… she full on barfs up her whole meal 1-2x a day. And she has a feeding aversion so getting anything in her in the first place is a miracle… I have to syringe feed her most of the time. And then she’ll throw up all my hard work. (She only eats 15-20 oz. a day so we’re dealing w/ weight issues as well.)
So I know how you feel. I feel like crying most of the time too. But you’re here w/ veterans who’ve been where we are too, and hopefully this too shall pass. Easy to say, but it’s gonna be tough to try dealing w/ it another few more months. ::sigh::
Just wanted to give you a big hug….
October 8, 2008 at 12:44 pm #57515AnonymousInactivethanks jolene– audrey’s photo is adorable! (and such a cute name) it sounds like you’ve got it a lot tougher than me…..hang in there. xxoo
February 3, 2009 at 12:28 pm #60751AnonymousInactiveFor mom’s with weight gain issues for your babies ask your GI about microlipids, i was very sceptical at first but my Kaitlyn has been on them for 2 months now and it is helping her with her weight even though her formula intake is not what it should be.
