Hi. got my pediatrician (not the Ped GI – wouldn’t do it) to up our dosage of prevacid for Ben from 15 mg to 30 mg which i am dividing in half for 2 doses daily – using the soutabs. then after speaking at our 4 mo. the ped ok-ed switching to the capsules and changed the script to capsules. hooray.
my understanding is i don’t have to worry about the timing of giving the dosage of the capsules with eating which would be a great relief – is this true?i have held this script for over a week – it is a 30 mg script – and have been trying DAILY to contact the cara cream contact (phone info for reflux solutions – also tried email) but no reply….i am almost out of the solutabs and need to fill this script – but don’t have a clue how to administer it without the caracream. i have heard about applesauce but ben has had NO food yet (almost 5 mo) so i wonder about that. also wonder if we should get the script in 15 mg. caps instead of 30s.We have an upper GI scheduled for tomorrow that i am near cancelling as ben has been SO much better the last few weeks. i have done so much since finding this forum (med dosage and timing, cutting wheat & citrus and seeing an acupuncturist who gave us some herbs for nighttime sleep!) that i am unusre of what has helped us most – but i’ll keep doing it all!!! sleep is improving slowly! whew. wonder then if we need the barium test and what it might show that would change what i am already doing.the thought of making ben go for 4 hours without eating is going to make us BOTH cry. should i cancel this test for tomorrow afternoon????? HELP! might be good to be certain it is not something else – but i am 98% sure reflux is all it is and this tet doesn’t even always show reflux – right???AGH!need some advice on the upper GI and the capsules…thanks, kristinSeptember 21, 2008 at 9:47 pm #56957AnonymousInactiveIf it’s the little beads insoide the capsules I have heard of other sprinkling them on baby food or applesauce and giving them that way. God luck.
Hopefully some else who actually uses them will chime in…LOLSeptember 21, 2008 at 11:13 pm #56965AnonymousInactiveHi Kristen–
It seems like we’re in similar situations.
Yes–you do have to endure the horrible wait with the capsules unless you’re using the caracream. My LO is 4 mo. and never has had solids, so (tonight for the first time) we used a tiny amount of pureed pears and poured the beads into it. He took it just fine!
I’m having the same trouble with the caracream people! Does anyone know how to get through to them? Please let me know if you finally get a call back or anything. I desperately want that stuff.
Congrats on the sleep being better….what are the herbs?? I am also seeing an acupuncturist for NAET treatments (allergy elimination) and I feel confident about it working (but it will take a while).
I couldn’t get the ped GI to up the dosage either…we’re working on another dr. In the meantime, I think we’re going to try to get it in Mexico…(we live in San diego).
Hope that helps….let us know how it goes with the capsules!September 22, 2008 at 12:12 am #56967AnonymousInactiveI would keep the test. It’s better to be safe than sorry IMO.
September 22, 2008 at 12:37 am #56968AnonymousInactiveoh–i forgot–as I understand it, the upper GI is basically used to rule out any other possible causes of the reflux….or other anatomical issues. It doesn’t really diagnose reflux. we did it about a month and a half ago. it wasn’t a big deal (as long as you have insurance). I don’t know if it’s necessary in your case or not…but hopefully that helps.

As someone said, you do have to time around meals unless you get the caracream. We used just a little bit of applesauce, then sprinkled the beads on top of that, and my son took it with no problems. I’ve heard that you can also do pears or maybe even pear juice or apple juice for a baby who can’t take a spoon yet, but we never had to try that (we were on the packets – mixed with water – til Nate was about 7 or 8 months old I think, then we switched to the capsules when the packets were discontinued).
Anyway, I’m not sure if you could get the Rx in 15 mg capsules or not? But it’s not really hard to divide up the 30 mg capsules into two 15 mg doses — that’s what we did for months. We would just open up the capsule, dump all of the beads into a medicine cup, then get another medicine cup and pour about half of the beads into it, just eyeballing it.Hope this helps and good luck with the higher dose!!September 22, 2008 at 3:31 pm #56991AnonymousInactiveEven though Ash takes Nexium: I pour half of the beads on to a spoon of applesauce and she takes it with no problem
September 23, 2008 at 12:30 pm #57009AnonymousInactiveHello, we are new to all of this. Is there any advantage or difference to capsules over solutabs? Our 4 month old is on 30 mg of prevacid solutabs, 15mg morning, 15mg before his last bottle.
September 23, 2008 at 12:45 pm #57013AnonymousInactiveHi there, someone else can chime in if I miss something, but many babies do fine on the Solutabs. Landen, my sensitive baby who has multiple food protein intolerances actually did OK on them. But some babies are sensitive to either the lactose and/or aspartame in them. If you suspect that, then the capsules should work better. Many will sprinkle the capsules on a little applesauce or pear puree or give them in a miniscule amount of water. Or, if you don’t like timing around meals, you can try getting ahold of some CaraCream (now called buffer babies).
I hope this helps some.September 23, 2008 at 12:48 pm #57014AnonymousInactiveKristin, sorry for that hyjack. Did you get in touch with anyone re: Caracream?
September 23, 2008 at 3:51 pm #57031AnonymousInactiveso…we bailed on the upper GI after getting an email from my ped who wrote that they are more to put parents at ease and are ordered by the ped GI’s to make it look like they are DOING something and make parents feel better. also that at best it would confirm his reflux and at worse show nothing…as he is improving daily.
Sadly i cannot directly attribute his improvement to any one thing b/c a few events coincided: namely wheat elimination (which i do attribute to improved day and night sleep), visits to the acupuncturist and some herbs for sleep, and the 14 day mark on prevacid – as well as an increased dosage spaced 2x daily at about 10 days into it)i say sadly but i am hardly sad…i am thrilled and can thank all the great advice and support i got here to getting my family through this rough spot. i just hope we are thru it…now i just need to get a hold of the caracream so i can switch to the capsules and all will be well. i emailed Laura’s suggestions and have not yet heard. Since Ben has not started any solid food i would prefer to stick with the solutabs. i am mostly looking to get rid of the timing issue – so i’ll wait for caracream and hopefully be able to get some!!!!the herbs the APist gave us are called “quiet nights” made by Blue Poppy Herbs. the acupuncturist ordered them for us.thanks for all the info and input! i’ll stay with solutabs until i can get some caracream!September 23, 2008 at 6:59 pm #57036AnonymousInactiveKristen–
