I mentioned this in my last post, but I wanted to get some advice from those who have also experienced slow weight gain…
Finn is breastfed and had trouble gaining from the start (reflux, combined with inefficient suck and resulting low milk supply). It took him 4 weeks to gain back his birth weight. He then started gaining 1 oz/day, but this would fluctuate depending on how much he spit up.
I thought we were doing well…still gaining about 1 oz/day, but over the last month (he is now 4 months) he slowed down and only gained a pound in 4 weeks. I feel like this is due to the amount that he is spitting up (huge quantities). He doesn’t have a feeding aversion…although in the past few days with the gap in his meds I’ve noticed him taking in less with some aversion. we’re getting the prevacid capsules today.
My question is…. is this weight gain too slow? Do I need to head to the dr.? I’ve been weighing him at a LC/breastfeeding group.
thanks!September 21, 2008 at 9:44 pm #56956AnonymousInactiveWell, it would all depend on how he is doing folowing his growth curve.
Jedd was an extremely SLOW grower due to GERD and his Heart defect. I mean REAL slow….LOLWe were happy to let him sit between 2-5%tile as long as he followed THAT curve. We didn’t care if he jumped curves just so long as he kept slowly gainnig at his own pace.At 6 months old he was only 12lbs. His heart was repaired at that age and by 12 months he had grown to19.5 lbs!!!! WHOOHOO for heart repairs!!!! LOLAfter that he leveled out and followed right around the 25%tile and has stayed there ever since. We are happy.September 22, 2008 at 6:17 pm #56992hellbenntKeymasterit’s true about their own curve.
at one point Ari (breastfed and non refluxer) fell off the chart!when he ‘got back on’ the chart he was just going along on his own curve…he’s still a peaunut at age 2 weighing 25lbs…September 23, 2008 at 9:16 pm #57039AnonymousInactiveWhen our reflux was bad (6-9 mos) we went in for frequent weight checks because Christian stopped gaining weight and had delayed motor skills during this period. Prevacid stopped his reflux all together, but it took us awhile to start coming back up the growth chart and at age 2 he is still only in the 12%,but is better than where he was at 1. Having a concerned and proactive pediatrician made a huge difference for us!

Christian, 07/08/06 med free, reflux free finally by age 2!!!!!!
September 23, 2008 at 10:33 pm #57046AnonymousInactiveMy daughter started out gaining well (up to 11lbs from 8lbs by 1 month) and then stalled by 2 months (12lbs) and gained only a little by 4 months (14lbs) and FINALLY at 5 months TOOK OFF and is now almost 17lbs. I think especially if the reflux isn’t well under control, they can gain slowly and it is ok. If you are worried, I would ask the MD to be on the safe side.
