Hey all, finding this site right now, is like a gold mine. Well, lets see now I and my wife have a 3 week old baby boy. About the 2nd week he was diagnosed with acid reflux, so his PI said, try Enfamil gentle ease and so we have been giving it to him with no signs of improving but getting worse..:( He is starting to throw up more frequently and sometimes projectile.
We then brought him back to his PI, now he prescribed him Reglan. I asked him, ” Is it safe?…..are there any side effects?. he just responded with,”oh, just some loose poo”. I googled it when i got home………and that Reglan has dozens of side effects and possibly some long term. We then decided not to give it to him and figure this out on our own. We ordered some stuff called Colicalm, dont know if any of you have tried it. It’s on it’s way here now, via mail. As of this moment, we have him on Nestlle good start which is 100% whey, with about 1Tb of rice cereal added. IT is helping, but he can down only 2 oz’s at a time any more and he pukes. He then sleeps for about 3-4 hrs then repeat the process. Sometimes he pukes up this too…..:( We are in distress here also ..like some of you. How can we get this reflux under control? any ideas……….is like music to our ears. Thank you.September 21, 2008 at 12:41 pm #56937hellbenntKeymasterWelcome! I have a LOT to say…and a few questions
have they ruled out pyloric stenosis?also: is there pain with all of this spitting up?if baby is not in pain, then unfortunatley there’s not a lot to do…the medications that we all rave about (ie: push, lol) help control the pain, but not the spitting up. there isn’t really anything to do about the spitting up. and, even adding cereal is controversial (introducing solids so young)for thickening; you might want to ask for a Swallow Study so that if thickening is found to be needed, then you’ll be told EXACTLY how much to thicken and this is with a ‘thickening agent’ called Simply Thick or Thick It…I have a LOT MORE to say & most of it is here- so Please click and read/scroll/skim through & refer back along the waySeptember 22, 2008 at 12:49 pm #56983AnonymousInactiveTHank you for response. Well, we gave in and started with the reglan. So far he has had 2 doses. He has been able to keep 1 feeding down, the other he threw up. How long does it take for Reglan to kick in?? or does it automatically?? THe good thing is that he has no other complaints. He sleeps ok, not colic. Just has a bad case of reflux, which i believe is affecting his wieght gain. He is hanging in there though. We are scared for him and us also. …….
September 22, 2008 at 2:47 pm #56988AnonymousInactiveHi I am new to this to. My daughter is 6 weeks old and has acid reflux. I finally figuered that out and the doctor to. She was pulling away at the breast and I thought it was me. I knew she was hugery and she would cry and scream every time she wanted to eat but could not because it hurt her. I wanted to cry so I tryed formula thinking that was the cure to everything wrong. She did the same thing to the bottle and formula so I felt a little bit better but know my poor daughter had to eat. I took her to the doctor and found out lots of babies have acid reflux I really don’t want her to be on meds but of course I want her to be comfortable and able to eat. I to searched to web and found colicalm it has helped my baby a little bit she is now able to eat and guess what I never knew a baby could sleep. She still so they say spits up but she smeems to be more comfotable then before there are gripewater that settles the stomach it helps to. Any one else used these things before meds. Let me know how they worked for you please. Hope this helps your little one. Good luck.
September 22, 2008 at 6:46 pm #56993hellbenntKeymasterI’ve heard great things about colic calm, but gripe water isn’t so good for reflux

It started working right away for us. The sidea ffects are completely reversaible. VERY rarely are they not, but all meds have some type of side affect so I wouldn’t go nuts googling them all…LOL
I would ask for a Upper GI (UGI) to rule out that Pyloric Stenosis. That was my first guess as well.If that comes back clear I would think that your son has Depayed Gastric Emptying (DGE) and woudl need either Reglan or Eryithromycin. These 2 will elhpt he body to empty faster.Unfortuntely by thickening the feed to keep food down that will only cause the problems to get wrose, but it’s a catch 22 KWIM??Another thing is you coudl switch to a more broken donw formula like Alimentum or Nutramigen. The stomach will have to do less work so the food can pass faster.September 24, 2008 at 1:03 pm #57058AnonymousInactiveThanks so much for all that you have provide me with about understanding acid reflux. My daughter does take cat naps through out the day and at night she would wake herself up my her arms moving around and startle herself awake. I now know its beacuse the acid burns and wakes her up. Oh yeah by the way the doctor said my daughter might have to go on zantac if her weight does not increase I was worried about this beacause of the meds but of course I want her to gain wieght and be healthy. Since I started colic clam she has been eating and sleeping at night witch she never used to do. It is amazing . I looked to see if colic clam had sodium something in it thankfully it does not contain that because I was reading how bab the long term effect would do to her. ANy ways hope it can help some one else to.
September 24, 2008 at 4:09 pm #57073AnonymousInactiveUPDATE: First thank you for responses. That fateful day, he threw up everything, did not keep a thing down. We felt a sense of urgency with this now. We took him to Childrens Hospital. He has pyloric stenosis……..my heart just dropped. Had the surgery yesterday evening. SO far everything is fine, and is recovering. Apparently, the recovery is 24-48 hrs. Right now he can only hold in Pedialite, we gave him formula and he puked it up. So he is going lite first..then work him in to formula. I shouldnt have any concern right??? This is part of the recovery process right??
September 24, 2008 at 4:43 pm #57076AnonymousInactivehang in there! My friend’s baby just had the surgery approx 3 weeks ago and it was a very severe pyloric stenosis that he was on the way to dehydration and in bad shape when she got to the hospital. Now, after the recovery, NO reflux and gaining so beautifully and eating like a champ! The surgery itself with the anesthesia, etc.. is a lot for a little baby, so just give him another day or so… also, if he is not keeping food down, they will not send you home and they will figure what to do before discharge.
The only thing I will tell you is that they did stay on nutramigen as it is MUCH easier for a baby to digest than the regular formula as the proteins are already broken down and they had the most luck on that. Their baby did start puking again on the regular fomula at first but once they switched, not a problem since…So glad you guys trusted your instincts! Great job!!!September 24, 2008 at 4:56 pm #57077AnonymousInactivemonty123 wrote: hang in there! Im going to the hospital again this evening and join my wife with the baby. She is concern cause the nurses are trying to push formula to quickly and he cant hold it down. I told her to tell them go lite first. Then will work in the formula. I dont know sometimes about those places…….u know what I mean??? Common sense is becoming rare.

OMGosh I was right….LOLIt will take a bit for it to calm down but once it does he shoudl be a happy normal baby AND shoudl possibly NOT need any meds since the vomitting was all due to pyloric stenosis…He made need the pedialyte for about 2 or so days, just give his tummy time to heal and it should pop right back on track!!!!! You acn also stat to mix the formula 1/2 and 1/2 and if he tolerates that then start mixing MORE formula and lesss pedialyte. And then keep adding more formula from there until he can tolerate ALL formula. This is what we do when any GI bug/sickness hits Jedd.GOOD LUCK!!!!! Let us know how the next week or so go for you!! WHOOHOO This is great news!!!!! You made my day!!!! LOL*Jessica*2008-09-24 22:32:05
September 25, 2008 at 6:50 pm #57120AnonymousInactiveWell, so far so good. My wife called today and said, that they would let the baby go if he would take down one more feeding of formula just to make sure everything is alright. Well, he didn’t. Wife called disappointed and said, he threw it up. I told her to take it easy, he is still healing. He will eventually. Im going over there today, and hopefully they will let our baby go this evening. They want to make sure he can keep down a few feedings..
I will keep you posted… Thanks everyone.
