Hello. My duaghter has been on prevacid for six weeks about and this has never happened before, but her spit seems to have a tint to it (almost a dark purple color). I wondered if anyone else has experienced this and if it could be from the meidicine. She has been really unhappy today, which isn’t that usual. I am waiting to hear back from the on call doctor, but I wondered if anyone has been through this or not. While I am at it, I am also wondering if I should be concerned about her poop color, which is a dark and light green. Thanks.

stool color: I only know about breastfed baby stool’s…as for the prevacid:have you checked to see if it’s a ‘proper’ doseif it’s solutabs: are you giving on an empty stomach, followed by a meal 30 minutes laterdo you have any zantac (or pepcid or tagament or axid)?you can give this, too, just give it 4hrs from the prevacidSeptember 20, 2008 at 6:21 pm #56911AnonymousInactiveI am giving her solutabs usually waiting the two hours after feeding because when she wakes up she wants to eat right away so I have not been able to do the half an hour before. The on call doctor said to give her pedialyte until tomorrow and then resume formula. If she spits up any color after that then I will have to take her in. She has never spit up any color before. Our doctor never had us use zantac. We started with the prevacid right away. He has recently upped her dosage to 15mg. Thanks for your help. Today has been a very frustrating day.

September 20, 2008 at 9:35 pm #56919AnonymousInactiveHi there,
I think purple spit-up while on the solutabs is really common and not a cause for concern. I know my oldest son had purple spit-up sometimes when he was on the solutabs, and if you do a search on this forum for “purple spit-up”, you’d probably come up with a lot of posts (though I don’t think I’ve seen any recently, so you might have to set the search limits back in time a little).Anyway, just wanted to agree with the previous posters about how important it is to wait at least 30 minutes after the solutab before feeding. I believe an explanation for this can be found on the marci-kids website — it has something to do with the acid-producing pumps being turned on in the stomach when the baby eats, then the med turns them off. The more pumps that are turned on at the right time (30-60 minutes after taking the solutab), the more pumps get shut down by the med, and so the more relief baby gets from the acidic burn when he/she refluxes. Most docs do not tell you this, but it’s essential for getting the most out of your meds.About the green poop, did this just start? Any new foods introduced (I don’t remember how old your daughter is)? Could be a stomach bug or some random stomach upset that will pass quickly…September 21, 2008 at 12:09 am #56929AnonymousInactiveMy ds has always had varying shades of green for BMs. He is on Elecare formula. I don’t worry b/c it’s always been green.
Here is the reason for the empty-stomach and 30 minutes before meals rule with Prevacid. I know it’s really hard!why on an empty stomach from marci-kids:PPIs work by directly inactivating the acid- producing pumps in the parietal cells, but they can only have this effect if the pumps are actively secreting acid.(basically when you have an empty stomach you are hungry and when you are hungry, the pumps are actively secreting acid)why wait 30 minutes:Prevacid is a delayed release product. Inside the capsule (or packet or solutab) there are enteric-coated granules. Absorbtion of Prevacid doesn’t begin until after it leaves the stomach (in the small intestines). Thus, if you do not wait long enough, the Prevacid will not be fully absorbed by the body and you will shut down fewer proton pumps. If you give it to her sooner and she spits up, she will in essence have spit up the med too.September 21, 2008 at 11:16 am #56934AnonymousInactiveThanks for all of the information. I had given her the prevacid two hours after she had eaten in the morning. The purple spit happened later hours later at night. Does this mean she is not absorbing her medicine? I have her on enfamile with rice cereal added, but I am considering having her poop tested to see if she is MSIP. Some days are better than others. I can tell that she wants to happy and cooing but sometimes that just lasts for a couple of minutes and then she starts in screaming. I really appreciate everyone taking the time to answer my posts.
September 21, 2008 at 9:50 pm #56958AnonymousInactiveI would think that the meds coing up means she didn’t get it all. I woudl give it about an hour before a meal in stead of the 30 mins and see if that makes a difference.
Also green poo is normal IF you are using Alimentum formula. Not sure if that is what you are using.Other than that REALLY REALLY stinky runny green poo is a sign of Rotovirus. Which is pretty nasty stuff. And I do mean STINKY diapers. They coudl clear a house!!!!! -
