My nearly 7 week old son, Oliver, was diagnosed with reflux at a week old. Then a different doctor said he was perfectly healthy, but she’d put him on Alimentum anyway. He was still projecting vomit, spitting up a LOT/vomiting, arching, having tummy pains etc., so we went back to her & mentioned this…she referred us to a pediatrician, who also said he thinks Oliver is healthy, might have a bit of reflux & he prescribed Zantac [1ml twice day]. He’s been taking it for a couple of days, with maybe a slight bit of improvement [less spit-up/vomiting, basically]…but his gas seemed worse & he was having a hard time sleeping. We heard gentle formula was really good for babies with gas & I know Alimentum has casein in it [bad for gas] so we’ve been trying a few bottles of half & half [half gentle formula, half Alimentum]…the first couple of bottles he seemed to spit up MORE, then the third he did really well on & was spitting up LESS…then this morning I gave him his Zantac dose & his bottle & he was squirming SO badly, his stomach was gurgling…he vomited a lot & seemed generally agitated…However, since giving him half & half, he’s been sleeping longer…almost 5 hours in one stretch…but often makes noises [grunts etc.] in his sleep.
I’m so perplexed as to if this is a reaction to the half/half formula or to the Zantac…any thoughts?
September 20, 2008 at 6:42 pm #56912AnonymousInactiveIt takes a week or two for zantac to start working, its a weight sensitive so needs to be dose up everytime the baby gain weight.
If Zantac not working, you could ask for PPI or Prevacid, and again takes about a week or two for medication to start working. Is he has milk/soy allergy? because alimentum still has milk on it (eventhough already broken down).
I don’t recomended mix the formula though, since it will make his stomach more upset. My daughter is on Zantac for a month now, she’s doing good, way better than before, could go without spitting up for 2-3 weeks and her dose is up too, first she was on 1 ml twice a day and now she’s on 2 ml twice a day.
Hope it helps!
September 20, 2008 at 7:24 pm #56913AnonymousInactiveIf you go a week or so and don’t see any relief from the reflux while on Zantac move on to prevacaid. A PPI med. is soo much stronger.
ANd yes, Alimentum has milk in it, just very broken down milk. I believe the ONLY formula that can say it is 100% milk free is Elecare. But, Nutramagen does well for lots of MSPI babies.September 20, 2008 at 9:47 pm #56920AnonymousInactiveThanks for the advice, ladies.
He’s only been on the meds since Thursday night…so about 3 whole days after he has tonight’s dose. We are thinking of splitting it up & doing 10mg in the morning, afternoon & evening, rather than just 2 doses of 15mg.
We have no clue if he has MSPI. We’ve always been concerned that’s the real issue, but are having a terrible time getting the doctors to take us seriously. Where I live, babies have family doctors & only get referred to pediatricians if they have a problem…we were referred, but even he seemed to think Oliver is fine, maybe has a small reflux issue that he’ll grow out of soon. But, as parents, we feel there could be something more…it’s just…he can sometimes seem so uncomfy [squirming & arching] after he eats, even though he eats like a piglet. If the Zantac doesn’t help…it’ll be frustrating, since he’s now almost 7 weeks & we’ve known there’s been something wrong since he was about a week old.
My fingers are crossed the Zantac provides SOME relief, at least.
September 20, 2008 at 10:04 pm #56923AnonymousInactiveIf Zantac not working (but wait at least 2 weeks), you could ask for PPI (Prevacid, Prilosec).
These two are much stronger than Zantac.
Is he spitting up like cottage cheese or still milk/formula like?
My daughter used to spit up cottage cheese appearance but since on Zantac, her spit up more like formula/breastmilk appearance.
I asked her ped, he said because the cottage cheese spit up has acid on it but since my dd on zantac, the med reduces the acid in her stomach.I think thats you know when zantac starts working.
Hope it helps!September 21, 2008 at 12:44 pm #56938hellbenntKeymastermake sure to give the highest dose of zantac for weight (10 mgs per kilo), or, at least have the highest amount handy, so that you can increase (if you need to) from where the dr starts you off…
September 22, 2008 at 9:06 am #56978AnonymousInactiveUgh…I’m feeling so depressed.
We’ve started giving the Zantac in 3 doses of 10mg each…morning, middle of the day & night. I know it hasn’t been anywhere near a week yet, but so far it doesn’t seem to be helping & if anything, has made him more cranky/fussy. We’ve had a much harder time getting him to sleep & he still squirms in his sleep/seems to have stomach problems.
Does Zantac generally help babies sleep better? or can it make sleep worse?
My husband went back to work today & I feel lost without his extra help…
September 22, 2008 at 1:02 pm #56985hellbenntKeymasterzantac is in MLs as opposed to mgs bcse it’s a liquid. how much does baby weigh? I can help calculate for you.
PPIs are more in MGs (unless it’s a liquid). THESE take 14 days to see their affect.Zantac’s effects should be seen after a day or two if not immediately… -
