Today’s been really rough…actually, the last couple of days have kind of pushed us [hubby & I] over the edge.
Oliver was diagnosed with reflux @ a week old, but the more time that passes, the more formulas we’ve tried & the more research I do, the more I suspect he has MSPI, which is causing the reflux. The poor little guy started off with projectile vomiting in the hospital & once we got him home that continued, but we started noticing constipation [now green & messy stools since on Alimentum], tummy spasms after eating that only subside once he has vomited, restless & disrupted sleep [he barely sleeps in the daytime or evening, but is a good night sleeper], wet burps, terrible gas..the list goes on. He’s been on 5 different formulas, including Good Start Alsoy & now Alimentum.
He’s never been a big crier. The only times he USED to cry was when hunry, being changed & a few times here or there…but in the past few days he seems to constantly be crying. Today has been especially bad…besides sleeping during a walk to the park & about 30 minutes in my husband’s arms, he’s been awake & crying. He also now seems perpetually hungry, which I know can happen when reflux babies want to soothe the pain :/
We started Alimentum 2 weeks ago & at first saw no change, then about 4 days into it he started vomiting less, seemed to be making some progress…& now in the past few days he seems to be getting WORSE. LOTS of vomiting…barely sleeping…really irritable…crying a lot…seems to constantly be hungry.
I know a lot of people have it worse & have been dealing with it for longer, but DH & I are tired, frustrated, sad. We thought & hoped Alimentum was the solution, but it doesn’t seem to be. Ollie has an appointment on Tuesday [if it wasn’t a holiday Monday I’d try to get in early]…I’m PRAYING his doctor thinks it’s time to switch to Neocate or Elecare & to start on Zantac, in the least. We feel that he [& we] simply cannot go on like this…

There is something called a “honeymoon period” with meds and formulas, where at first the symptoms appear to improve but then regress or get worse.
I hope your dr agrees with you, but just so you know you can always change formulas on your own if you want. Also, you will need to give the formulas AT LEAST 2 weeks, if not longer to work. All the “bad” proteins need to get out of his sytem. The spitting up may increase in volume at first, since these type formulas are a little thinner than regular formulas.Hope you get some answers!! Keep us posted.August 31, 2008 at 9:04 am #55947AnonymousInactiveHe’s been on Alimentum for 2 weeks as of tomorrow…should we give it MORE time? I mean…it got better, now has gotten worse towards the end of the two week period…could it really now start to get better again?
August 31, 2008 at 12:51 pm #55949AnonymousInactiveNo, I think that 2 weeks for Alimentum is enough. With the Neocate or Elecare, you need to be patient so all of the “bad” proteins from the other formulas can work their way out of his system. It may not take that long, but just in case it does, I wanted you to be prepared.
August 31, 2008 at 1:47 pm #55951AnonymousInactiveIf you suspect a MSPI then alimentum has trace amount of milk in it. I’d switch.
Also if he did well for thos e2 weeks and gained good weight your meds might need to be upped.Good luckAugust 31, 2008 at 2:06 pm #55952AnonymousInactiveYeah, he has an appointment on Tuesday & we’ll discuss a switch then. Hopefully Neocate or Elecare is available & covered by our insurance or the government.
As for meds, he’s not on any medications at this time. We’re also hoping that’ll change as of Tuesday. At his last appt. the doctor said she thought he was too young for meds, but after the week we’ve had & seeing the poor guy in pain, we’re going to make sure she does SOMETHING for him.missnita2008-08-31 14:08:15
September 1, 2008 at 9:43 am #55959AnonymousInactiveIf he’s persistently projectile vomitting, you might to get an upper GI done to rule out pyloric stenosis, if you haven’t already.
September 1, 2008 at 11:58 am #55962AnonymousInactiveHe is no longer projectile vomiting…he’s now simply vomiting. It was mainly projectile before we switched to Alimentum. I’ve looked up pyloric stenosis, but he doesn’t have a lot of the other signs/symptoms…for one, he was projectile vomiting in the hospital, while with pyloric stenosis it usually shows up around week 3. He’s also gaining weight normally & is anything BUT lethargic.

If, for some reason, you are unable to get a script for the Neocate/Elecare, you can always just buy it yourself. The pharmacy will order it for you, or several moms buy it on Ebay. Then, once you see that he is doing better, you could go back to the doc, show him your “evidence” and demand the script then. Hopefully though it won’t come to that!September 2, 2008 at 7:28 pm #55994hellbenntKeymastersounds also like your poor baby would benefit from some medication!
if your dr won’t prescribe any then perhaps a family doctor will?September 14, 2008 at 9:31 am #56559AnonymousInactivehellbennt wrote: sounds also like your poor baby would benefit from some medication!
if your dr won’t prescribe any then perhaps a family doctor will?My thoughts exactly. You don’t have to keep it together when you go into the drs. office. The dr. needs to see how your really feeling and like Laura said, if your dr. won’t prescribe the meds. then find someone who will. Usually a family dr. will because they have seen their adult patients in pain and I don’t think would ever deny them of meds. Keep us posted.September 15, 2008 at 9:24 pm #56668AnonymousInactiveYep, we got our meds from a family doc and I have no idea where Jackson would have been with the crappy dose his first pediatrician was willing to give. Best of luck!
