InactiveHello! So glad I found this site..
Baby Diagnoised yesterday. She is 12 weeks old.
The 1st signs were all of the sudden her screaming and turning purple. Thsi cry was like nothing I had heard her do before. It was horrifying. She did it when she was on her back, of course. We got some baby zantac from the dr yesterday. She has had 2 doses.
Heres my questions
She has done it now twice while sitting upwards. Is that unusual?
Her voice is now scratchy sounding. Can that happen if she has had many episodes in a day?
How long until I see some improvement with the Zantac?

You should see almost immediate results with the Zantac. Zantac works to neutralize the acid that is already in the stomach. It will make it so when she does spit up, it is not as acidic. Nothing, short of surgery, can correct the actual spitting up. You just want to make her comfy.It has been my experience that in a lot of cases, Zantac just doesn’t cut it. Just a word of warning that you may have to move on to a stronger PPI medication like Prevacid. The Prevacid works to shut down the pumps that produce acid. It is a wonder drug, IMO. Check out http://www.marci-kids.com for more PPI info and dosing info. It usually takes a pretty high dose for our little ones b/c they simply metabolize it faster than adults.If I were you, I would push to have an upper GI series done on her. This test checks for structural abnormalities that may be causing the reflux, as well as aspiration. If she is turning purple and choking, she may be aspirating stuff into her lungs. You should see results almost immediately with the Zantac, but I would say if after 1 wk you aren’t impressed then you need something stronger. It does sound like she may be aspirating and that is pretty scary and so I would push for the upper GI as well. I will say that even when you get the acid under control sometimes the spitting continues for what seems like forever and usually gets worse before it gets better. 4-7 months are the peak time and you are fast approaching that time with your lo. Glad you found us. THis place has saved many of our lives and sanity.

Keymasterwelcome!this sounds like my baby, too. he’d shriek/howl for hours on end (until we got his reflux properly treated)…
when he was switched from zantac to prilosec, we were not told to keep him on the zantac as we made the transition from zantac to prilosec & he shrieked/howled for so long and so intensely that he lost his voice. it was pitiful! I don’t tell you this to scare you, just to tell you that you are not alone and that you’ve found a great place!first: I would check the zantac dose. my (educated) guess is that it could be increased. but, don’t just take my word on this! read here:Zantac dosing- my/other’s question: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=9539&PID=82914#82914so the maximum dose is 10 mgs per kilo. we can help you figure out what that would be so you know where you have to increase up to.next: I’d go buy some mylanta cherry supreme. this particular variety does not contain any aluminum & is safe, even for newborns (even though it’s the adult kind-there is no baby or child version). you can give this along with the zantac, even, to help it go down easier. you cannot overdose or give too much of it- you can give up to 5mls given spread out over the course of a day- 1ml here, 1 ml there- you know if it’s too much because you will see loose stoolsI have A LOT MORE TO SAY and it’s here: -
