I am SOOO tired! And I am started back to work yesterday. 🙁 Our days seem like they are going a bit better. I am trying to really stick to my limited diet, but our nights are horrible. They have been this way for a long time, but I just kept thinking it was something I ate…now I am not so sure? Audrey will only sleep for 1-2 hours and sometimes not even that. Last night I feel like I was helping her cope all night long. she wasn’t supposed to get her prevacid until 7am but I gave it to her at 5am because she was screaming and would go back to sleep and wouldn’t eat (though it seemed like she wanted to). Shortly after her medicine, she ate then slept for an hour. UGH! I just cry!
I see that somone said if you are on this forum you need to see a GI specialist? I have questions about this…my daughter is 4 mo. –is she too young? will they be able to do anything for her, or are they going to say her intestines are irritated (this I know)? I just hate to do some invasive thing if they really can’t do anything for her. My ped said we could do some stool tests, but they would mostly just be reassurance for me. I’m not sure how, but if there’s nothing they are going to be able to know or do, then I don’t see a reason to bother with it. I am feeling very desparate! I have tried to weed through some of the many helpful links, I just don’t have time to do all of the reading between home and work right now. Audrey is on 15 mg of Prevacid 2x a day at 4 mo. I think this is a max? Where do I go from here? I meet with her doctor on Friday…what should I advocate for regarding medicine and or GI specialists? Please help!(It is so hard to keep going when everyone seems to look at me and say “couldn’t you just use formula”? Breastfeeding is so important to me,b ut sometimes I feel like i am just making everyone miserable!)RachelAugust 26, 2008 at 9:05 pm #55764hellbenntKeymasterI see that somone said if you are on this forum you need to see a GI specialist?
that MIGHT have been ME (sounds like me, LOL!), but I don’t quite think I said you MUST or NEED?
if I did, then let me explain myself:if you’ve found this forum, chances are that things are bad enough, and you are desperate enough, that it certainly would not hurt to get to a ped GI…it usually takes a while to even get an appointment, so I would suggest to make the appointment, as you can always cancel it if things get miraculously better down the road & I certainly hope they do!!!I would go for the stool tests- why not? This should mean they are looking for ‘hidden’ blood- then you would know for sure if you are dealing with an intolerance or allergy. now, even if there is no blood, it still could be that baby is intolerant to particular proteins being ingested via your diet/your milk so, you might just want to start there, with a stool test and see what happens.what are baby’s stools like? regular, mustardy/seedy breastfed baby stools? occasional green stools are ok! You just don’t want *every* diaper to be green. same goes for mucous. are baby’s diapers frequently mucousy (looks like snot- can be ‘stringy’ )? again, SOME is ok, just not the majority…are they green & foamy, like shaving cream? watery & green? these can be signs of OAL:about OAL (overactive letdown):you say she’s getting 15mgs 2x a day. that’s great! is it solutabs? if so, are you giving on an empty stomach, followed by a meal 30 minutes later? this is hard when breastfeeding…how long has she been taking the solutabs (correctly)?if it’s under 2 weeks, you’ve got to give it a good two weeks…you ask if there’s a maximum dose- there is- kind of- it goes by age & weight of the baby- look for the dosing calculator- if it confuses you then please post in the Medicines forum so we can help you decipher it, as it can be confusing…but you do say she’s on 30mgs total so that should ‘do’ it…I know you don’t have time to check out too many links- I’ve only given you what I think will help you & answer your questionsin summary:I think that if you’re giving the solutabs on an empty stomach, followed by a meal 30 minutes later AND if stools are ‘normal’ then, if it were ME (and this is ME here, not you of course), then I would do the TED out of desperation. I actually DID do the TED out of desperation…hang in there!!!August 26, 2008 at 10:00 pm #55766AnonymousInactiveI agree w/ everything Laura said but will echo some specific points.
I would definitely look into a ped GI. Your dd is most certainly not too young. Evan (my ds) has been seeing ped GIs since 3 wks old. Helping solve the mystery of the “black box” (our babies ) is their job & the only thing they do (vs. our general peds- though it’s AWESOME that your general ped prescribed such a great dose of Prevacid…).I would also do the hemoccult stool tests. You will know for sure the extent to which your dd’s bowel is irritated & also if it’s still bleeding. If it is then chances are there’s something in your diet that she’s still reacting to (assuming you’ve been limiting your diet for 2+ wks). This leads into my next suggestion. As Laura mentioned I would consider TED if I were you. This was the one & only thing that eventually helped my ds. Had I not done this he would still be howling all day & squirming, grunting & crying most of the night . Eventhough he was still very young when I went on it (4wks old) & it really wasn’t that long for the irritation to take place, it took a LONG time for his colon to heal so I’m glad I stuck w/ it.As for the invasive procedures… we eventually went this route (upper endoscopy & colonoscopy) b/c I was on the TED for 4 wks & he was still having blood in his stool (plus green, musousy diapers). Anyway, my point is: if you end up considering either of these procedures (or any procedures really) it’s much easier than it sounds. This is what let us know that the TED was working & his esophogus was perfect (so reflux wasn’t irritating it) & colon was almost healed. Finally, I was right there w/ you feeling like I was doing more harm than good w/ bf’ing . I had (& still do actually) people say to me daily “why don’t you just do the formula” so I understand your frustration. It’s your decision & breast milk is still the best for your baby… as well as your baby’s reflux (see Dr. Sear’s site, kellymom.com, etc).Hang in there…August 27, 2008 at 12:29 pm #55779AnonymousInactiveAudrey is on the compounded prevacid. She did not tolerate the solutabs well at all. She seems very sensitive all around. Since i had so many problems with my son’s reflux, I did not mess around when I saw early signs from her. I just did not realize that food intolerances were in the mix. I have been on some form of the TED for the past two months; however, I mistakenly assumed that I coudl broaden my diet more than I am findng I can. I have returned to the original TED with a few exceptions that I feel comfortable she is tolerating, but we struggle along the way. I am currently speculating that she might also have trouble with corn. We had a rough night (no sleep) after corn on the cob, and looking back other random foods that I could not see how/why they would bother her do have corn in them. I am not totally convinced but wondering if this needs to be added to our list of unedibles (dairy, egg, nut, beef, pork…)
I meet with our ped on Friday. I think I will ask to see the GI and to have the stool samples done. Thansk for all your advice!August 27, 2008 at 1:11 pm #55781AnonymousInactivehttp://www.askdrsears.com/html/4/T041800.asp#T041805
Here’s a helpful link that lists the most allergenic & least allergenic foods. And yes, corn is in everything… corn starch, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, maltodextrin, etc. I added some things in that I thought were ok, but removed them once I realized the ingredients (although I think Evan’s ok w/ corn but I haven’t officially added it in yet).August 27, 2008 at 1:28 pm #55783AnonymousInactiveoh yeah, abou the stools…her stool used to be green and very ripe smelling. This seems to be better, especially the odor, since I recently went off of beef and pork. Her gas improved even more since we added probiotics (although sometimes I am wondering if there is somethign in her probiotics that bother her mildly–solaray babylife). The green and sometimes mucousy stool appears to be related to what I eat. As I am getting back tothe basic TED, her stools are more regularly yellow/green seedy and normal breastfeeding smelly. However, when we have bad nights her stools are usually green and mucousy again.

Can I ask…what does Evan have trouble with food-wise? What do you eat right now?August 27, 2008 at 1:32 pm #55785AnonymousInactiveYes, this is the story of my life (tracking the stools). Evan’s intolerances are directly related to his diapers. When he’s feeling well (& I’m on strict TED) his diapers are yellow, seedy & breastmilk smelling. When he reacts negatively to a trial they go to super smelly gas (& poo), mucousy & green.
Probiotics have helped us a ton as well. I don’t know about the brand you use, but we were one on before that “may contain traces of milk & soy protein” & he still reacted to that. There are many hypoallergenic brands. We use the Klaire Labs Infant formula.
August 27, 2008 at 1:40 pm #55786AnonymousInactiveWhen I first started TED I did the usually stuff: turkey, rice, white & sweet potatoes, pears & squash/zucchini. I had to eliminate turkey, rice & sweet potatoes eventually to get a baseline to start from (after 4-5 wks of strict TED)… that’s when his diapers consistently stayed “normal” (& actually his reflux ‘disappeared’ but this is not very common I don’t think).I’ve tried adding in: turkey, pork, wheat, and some other things but he’s reacted (pretty much immediately) to them. There are a few things that I’ve had that I think he’s ok with (avocado, salad, etc) but I haven’t officially added them in. Surprisingly he’s been ok w/ beef… but I’ll be honest – a girl can only eat so many burgers-lol .Right now we’re working on transitioning him to his crib (from our bed) so I’m back to my baseline of foods: white potatoes, pears, squash, zucchini & beef. That’s it for now.Edited to add: Evan is (obviously) very sensitive as well & couldn’t tolerate solutabs OR any kind of compounding solution (due to the sodium bicarbonate). The only Prevacid he can tolerate is the capsules w/ pureed pears. Maybe you could try this & see if she improves? It won’t help her diapers, but it might help overall comfort. The sodium bicarbonate made Evan so gassy & miserable.erinntx 2008-08-27 13:47:12 August 27, 2008 at 8:56 pm #55810AnonymousInactiveHey there, Erin is giving you some great advice here. And I just wanted to concur. And to say that we are here to support a breastfeeding mama! Don’t let naysers get you down. I think all of us breasfeeding moms have heard the “why don’t you just try formula” speech from all angles. Hang in there. If it is important to you, try to keep focused on that and know that you are doing the absolute best for your baby.
It does get better. I promise. I thought I was going to lose my mind those first several months, but once I got my diet figured out, Ben on the right medicine, it became much easier. I nursed him for 20 months when I thought I would be lucky to make it to 6! It really is doable.August 30, 2008 at 9:35 am #55897AnonymousInactiveAnother bf mama here to chime in. I can almost guarantee those people telling you to stop did not bf their babies. Here are some things you need to know. Formula is not going to be any better and more than likely will just make things worse. There are enzymes in the bm that actually help reflux babies, bm acts as an ant-acid (sp), and the hormones in the bm calm you and your baby. I took the advice of friends, family and doctors with my first son and did stop bf him and gave him formula. Not only did it make things much worse, it was extremely expensive, I was very depressed I stopped, and I really could’ve used those calming hormones. So, all of that you can share with the people telling you to stop.
As for the sleep, we did everything and I do mean everything and nothing worked for us. Not to say that I don’t think you should try. I still feel like we missed something. However prepare yourself that this may be how it is for awhile. Continue to try to fix it, but if at some point you see it not getting any better let go. I HATE to even say that. Someone on here told me that too and I was a little aggrivated. Once you let go though you are less likely to be angry with your baby and yourself. I do hope so much for you though that there is something there and you will figure it out. We were finally sleeping through the night at 10 months. It was a hard ten months, so I know what your going through. We are pregnant again and I am so scared when I read your post. I remember being there. I hear your desperation and can still remember my own desperation. We are here for you and if anyone can understand what your going through it is us. Vent anytime you need to and please let us know if things do get better and what you learned the problem is. Good luck. You are a fantastic mom and your baby is so very blessed to have you as his mama.August 30, 2008 at 12:20 pm #55905AnonymousInactiveFrom someone who could NOT breastfeed due to their child’s heart defect I will tell you DO NOT stop nursing. Even if you have to do the TED B/M is much better than formula for a child with GI issues.
It is easier to digest. You will have issues trying to find a formula that will be that easy on the GI system. It’s the one thing I wish I could have continued to do. Pumping didn’t workl. I wasn’t producing enough. Added to the fact ahtt JEdd had to eat every hour around that clock and it took about 30 m ions to fee dhim one ounc edue to his heart.I ahd to stop pumping or I was litterally going to be sent to the LOONY bin…. -
