Hi
My son is almost 4 1/2 months and was diagnosed with reflux a few months ago but they also put him on levsin for gas which now that i am reading more into reflux maybe it was one or the other and I don’t know how to tell which one he has.He has been an awful sleeper all along..naps for about 30 minutes and can’t put himself back to sleep unless I rock him in which he can sleep another 30 or 40 minutes. At night he hsa good days and bad days but lately and for the last few weeks his latest trend has been I feed him at 6:50 after a bath and after some oatmeal cereal he passes out and i put him down. 40 minutes later he wakes up and because it is the only thing i can do, I feed him again and he goes down and sleeps for a few hours..about 4 or 5. Sometimes and more often than not, he gets up about 5 or 10 minutes after and I rock him back and then up again a few minutes later and I rock him back. The past few nights he has gone to sleep and is up and I cannot get him back. He is fussy and kicking and just can’t stay asleep. He also has been getting up for his night feeding or feedings (usually one or 2 at the most) and staying awake for 2 hours!!! I am dying! He has been bad at sleeping since he was born but it has just gone on so long and I have no answers to anything – I don’t know if it is gas, colic, reflux? I have a dr’s appt on monday with a new ped. as my old one was not giving me any answers or solutions to his sleeping problems and his diagnosis! Any help or suggestions?ksanto01 2008-08-23 20:05:58 August 24, 2008 at 9:50 am #55672hellbenntKeymasterhi & welcome!
I have a LOT to say & (most of) it’s here:
Groupie Intro: my intro: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853&PN=1&TPN=1
I would stop giving cereal. This is most likely not helping your baby’s sensitive digestive system. I would take a look at what your baby is eating, in general, meaning formula or breastmilk. If it’s formula, I might try changing to nutrimigen or alimentum and giving the change a GOOD 2 or even 3 weeks. If no improvement, go from there. If it’s breastmilk, I would cut out ALL dairy and soy (even ‘hidden’ as ingredients like casin, whey, rhennet, etc) for a good 2 or even 3 weeks as well. Or you could go ‘whole hog’ and do a TED (total elimination diet) – more about that from the link I gave you above.
In the meantime, I’d also try some mylanta cherry supreme (this particular kind, as it has no aluminum like the other varieties do, and is safe for babies.) Give 1ml here and there when baby is fussy/uncomfortable. if it works, keep giving it- you can give up to 5mls over the course of the day (or more)- you’ll know if it’s too much if you see loose stools.so glad you found us!~laura

August 24, 2008 at 8:09 pm #55690hellbenntKeymasterI cannot tell you what to do…what I would do is to cut out the cereal and see if it makes any difference in his sleep habits. if you want to keep giving cereal, then perhaps buy a brand that has no milk or soy proteins in it like Beechnut brand or another brand (not gerber).
I also cannot tell you to give up certain foods. There was a time I was so desperate that I did the TED. In my baby’s case, his reflux/discomfort was not related to food I was eating. But, I am very glad that I did the diet, just so I could KNOW and so I could stop wondering. Oftentimes, the only sign of an intolerance is sleep disturbance. this stuff is so hard to figure out sometimes!if you do decide to try & see if it’s dairy and/or soy then yes, you would have to stop all dairy and soy, including ‘hidden’ dairy (& soy) like ingredients such as casein, whey, rhennet (sp?), etc. This should be for a good 2 or even 3 weeks. again, in my case, I felt like I should just go for it & eliminate everything- thus the TED…anyway, it’s all here:hang in there!~lauraps: this link should help, too! -
