I have a 6 week old who projectile vomited at least 1 time a day from about a week old on. she gasps and wheezes and arches her back and is often fussy and pulling off repeatedly during feedings. She wasn’t napping or sleeping well at night. Around 3 weeks we tried maalox before feedings and sleeping on tummy(i know, bad) and she was a different baby. 3 naps a day, 4 or 5 hours of straight sleep at night, liked to lay down and kick around, not screaming all the time. After 10 days of bliss her symptoms returned, but much worse. She was awake for 10 hours straight and screamed for 3 straight. vomiting multiple feedings a day, and of course spitting up regularly. no more naps or only 10 minutes while being held, waking herself up at night making horrible gasping, grunting, and wheezing noises, sounds like she is choking, lots of gas, and also started pooping more frequently(7 or 8 times) after having slowed to 2 or 3 a day. My girl was so sweet when she felt well and she is going back to being miserable again! we are trying zantac morning and night and maalox at 4 feedings, but so far no better. She vomited both breastfeedings today, but did keep down 2 feedings of breastmilk given by bottle. I have not been eating anything spicy or any fresh veggies and only having a dairy product once a day or every few days. WHAT TO DO????

Many refluxers are intolerant to a lot of things. The big culprits are dairy & soy. This includes all hidden forms of dairy that you wouldn’t even think of. You might try checking out our TED forum and give the Total Elimination Diet a try and see if she gets better. A lot of people have found that their LO was reacting to many things in their diet and knew exactly what they could eat once they got through (although not fun) the diet. You might find that nothing bothers her and then you have peace of mind that you can eat anything. Also, zantac didn’t help us with our symptoms (many of the moms on here can say the same). The majority of us have had much better success controlling the acid with PPI drugs (prevacid, prilosec, nexium, zegerid) You might try checking out http://www.marci-kids.com they have all of the latest research on acid reflux in babies/kids and have a PPI dosing calculator and invaluable info on dosing, etc. They feel that getting a high dose but splitting it 2-3x per day is best, and most of us here agree. It took 30mg prevacid to get my little man comfortable.Good luck and please fire away with any other questions!August 24, 2008 at 11:26 am #55679hellbenntKeymasterhi & welcome!

The last few days I have been returning her to the breast 10 minutes or so after she vomits and she does not repeat vomit, at least this way I know she is still getting food while we sort this out. She has gained 2 pounds over her birth weight at 6 weeks, so she is growing. At least thats good!
