I know that reflux can often contribute to poor weight gain, but I’m just not sure that’s the case with my ds. Any input would be much appreciated…
Gabe is 16.5 months old. He weighs 21.8 pounds and is 30 inches tall. Head measures 18 inches. He was a big baby and was a major chunker. We started him on reflux meds really early on and he did very well on them. Never was a spitter and the only time we’ve seen him uncomfortable is when he needed his meds upped or when we’ve tried to wean him.
He’s currently on Prevacid twice a day and seems to being doing great. We just tried to wean him, but with teething and everything it didn’t work.
He was late into solids. He’s been eating solids consistently for about 2 months now and still breastfeeds several times a day and during the night.
He’s meeting all of his milestones and, aside from talking, he’s even ahead on many things.
My dh and I are both small people. He’s 5 ft 7 and I’m 5 ft. My husband had to see a specialist when he was 5 or 6 because he was small, but they didn’t find any problems. So this is def. a family trait.
The doctor today said she wants him to see a specialist because of his halted growth. After talking to my DH I just really don’t see what they would do. The medicine seems to be working for him and is keeping him comfortable.
Is there anything I’m missing or overlooking? Is there any reason to take him to a specialist? Especially because I have no clue if there’s even a good GI specialist around here?
Thoughts and input PLEASEW!!

I am not sure if I will ease your mind or not, but it doesn’t sound like you are dealing with a FTT issue. It seems like he is ‘thriving’ and happy, and you have his pain under control. It sounds like he’s eating too!! It would be different if he refused to eat. Is he falling off the charts or on his on growth curve? There WAS a period of time when my son had an aversion and I was sleep feeding him, BUT I got things under control for him, and even after he started eating the recommended amounts, his weight gain was still slow. I had to get out his baby book to see his “I’ve Grown” stickers….but here is an example (this is long after his aversion)Date: Jan 23rd (he was almost 11 months old- we were about 2 months behind on his 9mo well baby!)Height: 30 inWeight: 24 lbs 8ozDate: June 19th (5 mos later!)Height 32 inWeight 24 lbs 4oz (he lost 4oz)My pedi was not really concerned b/c he’d gotten a little taller, plus, like you, DH and I are small. My husband is 5 ft 9ish and doesn’t weight anything and I am 5’5 and smaller build.I weighed Landen recently at home, by weighing myself first and then with him (I know that isn’t accurate) and he is still uner 25lbs. I am trying not to stress too much. He comes from parents who are small LOL and he didn’t have the easiest start in life LOL. I think that is probably the case with your LO. I hope that helps some. 🙂August 20, 2008 at 5:20 pm #55521AnonymousInactiveThank you! That does make me feel better. A friend just emailed me the exact same information. I guess it just looks worrysome because he was such a chunker at one time and now he’s not.
The doctor said he had fallen off the charts and that freaked me out, but after looking up online he’s definitely on the charts. Low, but still on the charts.
So, is there any reason to go ahead with seeing a specialist? I’m honestly not sure what they would tell us to do?

He had some huge thunder thighs on him and was SO chunky and after he turned one, he just got sooo skinny. He is such a skinny little thing now! Landen is the same way, pretty good sized baby and now just thinning right out. You also have to take into consideration their mobility. They are burning off so much fat running around at this age.
Here are my personal thoughts on the specialist, if it were me, I would go. I’ve been to so many specialists for various things with my boys and found out that it was just for my own peace of mind or in many cases, I think for my pedi to feel better or to have their own “CYA” paper in their file. (that might be the case with your son). You might find that it makes YOU feel better esp if the specialist tells you him/herself that it’s nothing to worry about. Also, maybe they will have advice on how to boost calories for your son. Even though my pedi and I are not stressed about Landen’s slow gain I am still always looking for ways to get some extra fat on him. 🙂HTHjilly782008-08-20 19:15:19
August 20, 2008 at 7:42 pm #55525hellbenntKeymastermy Ari is a peanut. he ‘fell’ off the charts at one point-freaked us out!!!
he got back ‘on’ the chart, so we never were told to pursue a specialist or anything. he’s 2 and ‘only’ in the 25th%ile for weight & height…
it’s funny that you post this because maybe this is a ‘new’ trend right now- sending toddlers to specialists for being tiny- I know of 2 other 2yr olds that our pediatrician has sent to a specialist. She was not the doctor that we saw the day I brought Ari for his well-visit & I wonder if she would of told us to take him, too?anyway: go to the specialist and see what s/he says. I bet everything is fine! -
