I took my DD to the Dr today because her reflux has progressively been getting worse over the last two weeks. She is on Zantac. It seemed to work when she was first on it but even after uping her dose a couple times I just feel like it is not working. They upped her dose last week to 0.9ml/2x a day. I still was not seeing any improvement, in fact she was getting worse so I took her in to the Dr today. He recommended that we up the dose to 1.1 ml/2xday and that I try giving her some cereal. If it doesn’t seem to improve in a week, then maybe we can explore other options. DD is EBF, 23wks, and 13 lbs 8 oz. I have been doing TED for 4 weeks now. Her diapers are now normal, before they were all mucous.
I just don’t feel like this is going to work. I know DD doesn’t have the most severe case of reflux but she is obviously in pain and today she would hardly even eat. I hate to think to make her wait a whole week before we maybe find a solution that will work. Has anyone found that giving cereal actually helps? What would you do? I am considering trying a different ped to get a second opionion.August 20, 2008 at 1:38 pm #55496AnonymousInactiveI think your instincts are right on. If you had to do TED for her diapers to be normal, chances are, she won’t be able to digest the cereal very well. so, it will probably only make matters worse. Did the doctor actually think it would help with her pain??
I would give the upped Zantac dose a couple of days, not a full week, and in the meantime look for a new doc. Have you tried discussing the Marci Kids info with him? If he doesn’t want to budge on getting her on a PPI, then maybe try your family doc. They tend to know more about PPI’s as they prescribe them to their adult patients. Also, try some Mylanta Cherry Supreme to help while you get it all straightened out.Good luck!August 20, 2008 at 1:44 pm #55498AnonymousInactiveThe Dr thought it would help keep things down I was so frustrated when I left, I was almost in tears. I didn’t feel like he was listening to me. DD doesn’t spit up that frequently. It is more I can hear the acid coming up her throat…it is almost like a gulping noise. Then she usually cries form the discomfort and then the past couple of days she is pulling off from feeding crying.
I had brought the Marci Kids info with me but l hardly got to say anything before he had made his determination. He said that if the upped dosage doesn’t seem to work than we will look at the PPI.August 20, 2008 at 1:54 pm #55500AnonymousInactiveGrrr… maybe try faxing the info to the office with a sweet but firm note? I would keep harassing them via the phone/fax until you get some real help. Remember, they are working for you! So, if you aren’t getting the service you want, it’s time to fire them!!!
August 20, 2008 at 8:00 pm #55528hellbenntKeymasterTED for 4 weeks? wow. go mama! I would *try* to start adding some new foods in (when I see ‘TED’ I think of only rice, squash, sweet potatoes, pears& free range lamb & ground turkey) AND I would give more zantac– I’ll do the math:
13.8oz = 6.14 kilosmaximum dose is 10mgs per kilo10 x 6.14 = 61.4 mgs total for the day of zantaccheck your bottle: zantac is 15mgs/mlso take 61.4 and divide by 15=4.1mls a day, total of zantac, divided into 2 doses however you want to divide them upyour doctor is telling you to give 1.1 x 2 = 2.2mls a dayYOU HAVE ROOM TO INCREASE!!!your pediatrician is ‘acting’ like a pediatrician. time for another doctor.READ HERE about WHY/HOW your doctor is not giving your baby the CORRECT DOSE:Zantac dosing- my/other’s question (has axid dose too): https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=9539&PID=82914#82914August 20, 2008 at 10:18 pm #55540AnonymousInactiveYeah, tell me about it. It took us a while to get to a baseline. DD was still reacting to some of the turkey I was eating and also potatos (who would have thought!) I wanted to start adding foods this week but her reflux was getting worse so I was scared to add anything Tonight it was awful…she hasn’t been this bad since before she was on meds. It just breaks my heart!
Thanks for the info on dosing. I am going to try to get into a different ped tomorrow and hopefully they will have a better solution than what I was told today! What are your thoughts about the recommendation to start cereal?August 21, 2008 at 7:31 pm #55571hellbenntKeymasterI would not start cereal and add to her troubled tummy. I would also not think that it’s your diet until you have a good dose of meds. If you are going by behavior alone, that is. If you are going by blood in the stools, mucousy stools and green stools then *maybe* it’s diet (your) related. otherwise, baby probably is in pain and reacting to reflux, not what you’re eating/not eating…
