My ds is one and has silent reflux ~
I have been doing TED for almost 2 weeks now with no visible change as of yet. He is on a high dose of Prevacid, 30mg a day. That has helped some, feedings are not such a struggle. But he is still congested and he coughs a lot. His sleep is horriable, last night he barely slept a wink. He tosses and turns all night and is just very uncomfortable. He has been very cranky during the day for the past week and a half.
Q 1. Do you discontinue meds during TED or keep giving them as directed?
Q 2. If my baby has a allergy, then does the allergy cause the reflux or just reflux type symptoms, or are they separate issues?TIA!

I did not want your post to go unanswered and I hope someone with TED experience will see this and chime in. I have not done TED, but I don’t think you would eliminate meds during this!! I would keep giving them. Also, I think it is beleived by most doctors that reflux is caused by 2 things. Either an immature LES (lower esophagael sphincter) or intolerances/allergies. I imagine that some kids could be unlucky enough to have both issues. For both of my kids, once their intolerances were all sorted out it seemed that reflux calmed down A LOT. So I think that when intolerances flare up from an offending food, it must cause the reflux symptoms (maybe spasming in the stomach from GI upset) someone please chime in if I am waaay off base here. Even when Landen was on Neocate only, he still needed Prevacid, so I really do think he must have had an immature LES as well as intolerances.I hope this helps some! I would try to stick out TED to see if there is any food intolerances and if you do not come up with anything, you might feel better knowing you can eat whatever you want and know it is an immature LES.Hang in there!August 20, 2008 at 2:35 pm #55503AnonymousInactiveHi!
It took a full 5 wks of strict TED + meds for my ds’s reflux & tummy pain to get better. As soon as his diapers were regluated we stopped meds (just to see) & he hasn’t needed them since (only 3 wks ago). I’m still adding in new foods & when he’s intolerant his reflux symptoms reappear. So, in his case the reflux is from intolerances.I wouldn’t stop meds normally though. The only reason we did was b/c he had some procedures done & couldn’t have meds that day. The procedures showed his esophogus was fine & his colon was healing so we tried a few days w/o meds & he seemed fine.HTHAugust 20, 2008 at 7:48 pm #55526hellbenntKeymasterthese 2 answered everything!
I would say to definitely continue with the meds and try the diet. you can always stop meds if the diet works and then add them back in if needed.I must say that it is RARE for diet alone to work for these babies. not unheard of, as Erin is proof(!), but rare.let us know how else we can helpAugust 21, 2008 at 10:00 am #55548AnonymousInactiveThanks for all the info!!
